Cimbex connatus? At Green Moor
Apologies for an insect only post which I wouldn't normally do, but recently what appears to be a Hornet mimic Large Alder Sawfly appeared in our garden at Green Moor a few days ago. After researching on-line it appears this may be an important record. After recent posts indicated a wide knowledge base out there I was looking for confirmation?

Certainly a rare Cimbex, either
C.luteus or C.connatus.
I think it is a female - the RES Handbook says that males cannot be satisfactorily identified.
Images on the internet can be misleading and I have no personal experience of either species.
My opinion, for a number of reasons, is that this is Cimbex luteus - a fantastic find.
Thanks for your response; coincidentally I posted this on the Natural History Museum blog and the only reply to date also suggested Cimbex Luteus so it looks like that's the most probable, cheers, Pete Garrity
I'm glad you mentioned that.
The only Yorkshire record I can find is from Thorne Moors about 50 years ago.
For the record, the images were taken on the 29th June 2013. Thanks for your responses, it's good to find something out of the ordinary for a change!
