Edderthorpe & Houghton

A good walk around the whole area this morning mapping the breeding birds. Highlight was a young Marsh Harrier which flew in at 11.00, quartered the flash for ten minutes and left up the valley towards Lundwood and Barnsley. Shelduck 7, Wigeon 2, Avocet 8, Oystercatcher 2, Black-tailed Godwit 2, Ringed Plover 2, LRP 2, Common Sand 1, Buzzard 2, Green Woodpecker 4, Wheatear 1.
Yesterday a Mink was seen to catch and kill a drake Tufted Duck on the River Dearne. There are at least 2 Mink on this stretch of river and any broods of ducklings aren't going to stand much chance of survival.
Yesterday evening there were 11 Yellow Wagtails and 19 Pied Wagtails feeding around the flash.
