Carlton Marsh

2 Tawny Owls were in their regular roost this morning, but had moved out of site by mid-day.

A Goldcrest sang near the hide and 3 House Matins flew north over the wader scrape.

Butterflies included 2m Brimstone. A Blue-tailed Damselfly was the first for this year.

Francis Heckingbottom visited this morning and provided us with a new species of fungi - Hawthorn Leaf Blight (Monilinia johnsonii).

South Kirkby Industrial Estate
2 Grey Partridges and a pair of Coot with 2 young.
 
12 Dingy Skippers were the first this year. Also 21 male Brimstone and 48 Orange-tips. A Small Yellow Underwing  moth was interesting (C. Parkin)

Goldeneye  1 adult male CP   + 1 female WRes..

Oystercatcher 5 adults CP 

+ a flock of 11 flew  north west over CP at 09.46hrs.

Mallard 9 young ( 1 yellow).

A Common Sandpiper spent the day on the wader scrape (JP et al).

It's good to know there are still 2 Grey Partridges around.

Insects included the first Small Heath of the Year, 12 Peacock, 2 Comma, 5 Speckled Wood, 2m Brimstone, 49 Orange-tips (15 of which were female), 1 Large White, 7 G.V. White, and 5 Small White.

Also of note Brown Silver Line moth, Green Tiger Beetle, Click Beetle (Athous haemorrhoidalis). Common Blue and Azure Damselfly were on the wing and the first Four Spot Chaser of the year. (Chris Parkin).

Shoveler 1 male.  Common Tern 3.

Goldeneye 1 adult male ACP, + 1 female WRes. 

Lapwing 2 adults + 1 small young in the Pol field. 

Mallard young:  3 small/medium CP + 10 (from 12) very small young.

Wintersett Res:

Pochard 1 male.

A Peregrine flew over the wader scrape this morning (JP).

This afternoon 2 Cetti's Warblers sang as did Cuckoo and it gave good views.

There are several Greylag and Canada Goose broods now.

A Fox was laid in the sun for quite awhile.

 Common Tern 4.  Arctic Tern 1 east at 08.48hrs.  Swift 100

Anglers CP:

An adult Kittiwake was in this morning to 08.00hrs at least. (GJS)

Common Sandpiper 1.  Goldeneye 1 male ACP +  1 female WRes..

Green Woodpecker 1.  Grey Wagtail 1.  Little Egret 1.  

Oystercatcher 6. Red Kite 1 1st summer. Yellow Wagtail 3. (GJS)

Golf Course field:  (PS)

 Lapwing 2 adults + 1 small young.

Old Royston Flash: (SD) 

3 medium/large young Lapwings in field next to traveller camp.

Walton Hall: (PS)

Redstart 1 male still singing.    Treecreeper 1.  Red Kite 1.  

Canada Goose 5 young + 8 young.

Wigeon 1 injured  female (still).  Tawny Owl 1.

Wintersett + Ringing 06.05.2024

Wintersett Res:

14 birds were ringed today:

Highlights of 3 Sedge Warblers,  1 Reed Warbler,   2  Garden Warblers, 

1 Blackcap and 1 female Cetti's Warbler (brood patch).   Common Tern 1.

A Green Woodpecker and a male Lesser Whitethroat were on the west bank. 

Also a control Sedge Warbler,  apparently ringed yesterday,  (but not here!!) 

Will be nice to see how far it moved overnight.

Wintersett Res:

Common Sandpiper 2.  Goldeneye 1 male + 1 female.

Anglers CP:

Little Grebe 1.  Long-tailed Tit fledged young.

Mallard young  6 medium + 1 very small + 7 small young. 

A Whimbrel flew north 10.08hrs (PS, RD, AS).

An adult Little Gull flew over.  (PS, AS).  Common Tern 2.  

A Tawny Owl was seen on the Woodland Walk. (SD).

Lepidoptera:

A male Orange Tip flew over CP.

Odonata: 

A Common Blue Damselfly flew over north bank. WRes..

The Common Sandpiper spent its 4th day on the wader scrape along with a Grey wagtail.

A Water Rail called, a Cuckoo sang and a Kingfisher flew over the scrape (C. Parkin/CG).

The only report received today was of the Common Sandpiper, which has spent the last 3 days on the wader scrape (K. Bannister).

A Lesser Whitethroat sang from a hedgerow alongside Cudworth Dike.

A Common Sandpiper spent its second day on the wader scrape (JP/K. Bannister et al), but there was no sign of the Pink Feet Geese.

This morning 2 singing Cetti's Warbler, 5 Reed Warbler, 2 Sedge Warbler, 12 Chiffchaff and 6 Blackcap.

2 Grey Partridge were on a tilled field (L & A Corrall).

This afternoon a Common Sandpiper was on the wader scrape at 14.00hrs and an Oystercatcher flew south over the scrape at 16.00hrs. A Kingfisher flew over the reed beds (CG).

The Pink Feet had gone AWOL and were seen at Anglers Country Park (G.J. Speight)

Wintersett - Birding Big Day! 01.05.2024

86 species of bird were recorded in the area today - GJ Speight.

Biggest Dip - SWIFT! (there were 50 yesterday!)

Wintersett Res:

Goldeneye 1 male + 1 female.   

A Water Rail was calling from the south east reed bed.

Cormorant 3.  A Curlew flew south.

21 birds were ringed @Wintersett1 this morning with highlights of:

Reed Warbler 2,   Garden Warbler 2,   Blackcap 1,

Lesser Redpoll 5,  Willow Warbler 1 and Chiffchaff 1. 

Also - A Treecreeper was trapped on the clump.  Pete Smith.

Disposal Point - Ponds/Santingley - Barn Owl, Tawny Owl, Lesser Whitethroat, Cetti's Warbler, Little Grebe.   Steve Denny

2 male Wheatears were on a tilled field late morning (1 much brighter than the other is thought to be the Greenland race). Also of interest Goldcrest, Meadow Pipit and 3 Reed Warblers (L & A Corrall).

Earlier a Cuckoo sang along with 5 Whitethroats and a Sedge Warbler (JP).

Treecreeper, both Pink Feet and a Lapwing were of note (K. Bannister/CG).

 79 species were recorded in April. Well done everybody.
 
Storrs Mill to Ardsley Viaduct
4 Buzzards, Kingfisher, 7 Sand Martin's showing interest in nesting in the river bank, 2 Grey Wagtails, 2 Grey Partridges and 1 R.L. Partridge.
 
Butterflies included Holly Blue, 10m & 4f Brimstone, 36 male Orange-tip & 29 Peacock.
7 Large Red Damselflies were on the wing & Green and Sloe Shield Bugs were about (Chris Parkin).

Anglers CP:

Little Egret 1.   A Whimbrel flew north west at 09.03hrs.

Lesser Whitethroat 1 male Pol + 1 male east bank WRes.. 

Shelduck 2.  Mallard 6 young.   A Hobby flew over.  

Greylag Goose 2 adults + 5 young

Wintersett Res:

Goldeneye 1 adult male + 1 female. 

Tufted Duck 71 + 45 ACP + 17 CHRes..

Great Crested Grebe 4 + 2 ACP + 4 CHRes..

Common Tern 5.   Swift 50.  

Lepidoptera:

A Large White on Haw Park Lane +  1 in the Willow Wood. 

Odonata: 

A Large Red Damselfly was over the golf course pond.

This morning 2 Oystercatchers came onto the the wader scrape at 10.58hrs to join 2 Pink Feet Geese and a Grey Wagtail.

2 LBB Gulls flew south, 6 Skylarks and 3 Yellow Buntings were seen on fields to the east (A. Corrall/CG).

This afternoon 4 Swifts were over the scrape and an 18 inches long Grass Snake was encountered on the embankment.

3 Male and 1 female Brimstone butterflies were abroad, a Common Carpet moth was flushed and the larvae of a Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing was found (C Parkin).
