Carlton Marsh

The death of of Alan Archer was reported on X today. Alan was probably the last of a handful of pioneering birders in the Barnsley recording area. Together with legends Mike Clegg, Dave Standring, Brian Farmer and P.B. Wordsworth, Alan was instrumental in influencing the next generation of birders at sites such as Wath Ings and later Wintersett and Carlton Marsh.
A modest and very likeable man, Alan will be much missed from the birding scene in Barnsley.
Today at Carlton Marsh the Kingfisher showed well along with 5 Shovelers and a Grey Wagtail.
A Peacock butterfly was feeding on Buddlea. For for the second day running 8 Emerald Damselflies were seen near the hide together with a male and female Migrant hawker and 2 pairs of Common darter (CG)
