Bat Man... but not in Gotham City

A bat that entered a house in Stocksbridge this week proved to be a Leisler's Bat. Haven't heard of one around here before and looking on the internet it appears that South Yorkshire is at the northern limit of its range. It had entered a bedroom fitted wardrobe via the loft space. The house owner contacted the local 'bat group' who collected it as it was in an emaciated state.

On my arrival to Broomhill Flash this morning I was greeted by the sound of shot guns once again so I knew it was going to be sparse and I wasn't wrong. I was in the hide for 45 minutes and must have heard 50 shots in that short time. Geese were lying dead in the back field but not all one or two were injured and trying to make their way onto Broomhill Flash to get away from the onslaught. One of the guys actually came onto Broomhill Flash to collect a dead goose at the end of the shoot, which was wrote in the logbook.

Nelson is no more....

Anyone following the BTO Cuckoo tracking project will have probably have read that 4 of the 18 fitted with transmitters have perished on route to Africa. You may recall that Barnsley Ringing Group sponsored Nelson, a Cuckoo caught in Norfolk, and this bird is one of the 4 and only got as far as the south of France.
A shame it did not complete the full journey but that's the way it goes for a lot of migrants.

Golden Plover and Dunlin Breeding in Barnsley

After checking through the survey work that both Dave Pearce and I did this late spring we have a total of 65 pairs of Golden Plover and 28 pairs of Dunlin in the Barnsley recording area. These are birds that were successful breeders with young and obviously there will have been a few failed breeding pairs. An unbelievable total ! I think this is the first time such an intensive study was completed for these species although Nick Addy did cover a lot of the area in the late 1990s.

Edderthorpe gulls....

Arrived just as light was breaking through to the sound of large gulls calling, not something that happens regular here. Some were already flying off northwards and there was a large gathering on the water which had clearly roosted overnight. Counted 210 Lesser Black-backs and amongst them were 3Yellow-legged (2 adults and a juvenile) and a nice adult Caspian Gull. The Caspian was one of the last to leave, heading off north-west just before seven oclock. Spent most of my time here looking at gulls but other birds I saw;- Pintail, Ruff 3, Dunlin 8, Black-tailed Godwit 4, Golden Plover 2.

Melanistic Wood Pigeons?

Over the course of the last ten days I have seen two Wood Pigeons in very similar. plumages. The one below has been in my garden at Stocksbridge for the last ten days or so.. I thought that it had perhaps been in contact with oil are some some similar substance in the nearby steelworks. However the underparts are very similar to the usual plumage only a few shades darker and the colour is uniform throughout. The eye-ringed is far more pronounced than on normal plumaged birds.

I was about to dismiss this bird, when yesterday while walking around Ingbirchworth Reservoir with my wife, we saw a very similar plumaged bird on the wall at the northern edge on the reservoir.
I have seen a similar but darker bird at Upper Midhope about twenty years ago. So two birds in two days is remarkable,
(Excuse the poor photograph as it was taken in failing light this evening).

And finally, the report of a juv Little Gull at Broomhill Flash yesterday was in fact a juv Yellow-legged Gull. Apparently this was due to a misread text on my belhalf rather than a mis-identification. And if that's what the observer (pictured below) says, then I'm not going to argue!
