Carlton Marsh

The overnight temperature in my garden was -2.3c and the maximum was -.9c at 15.00hrs, the coldest daytime temperature since 28/2/18.

The scrapes were completely iced over today and freezing fog was a problem. A few Herring and BH Gulls were on the wader scrape and a few Teal and gadwall.

An unknown number, (sounded like a lot though) of Pink Feet geese flew west in the fog over the wader scrape at around 12.40hrs. Perhaps they were above the fog level?

A Willow Tit visited the feeder with a Coal Tit and a Jay.

Beech Avenue, Cudworth
Geoff Miller's garden is about half a mile east of the reserve. The cold weather saw 30 Blackbirds, 6 Fieldfare's and a Mistle Thrush, feeding on fallen apples.

Wintersett, Saturday

Your usual correspondent is away travelling again (Thailand looking for Spoon-billed Sandpiper since you ask).
A Merlin flew high north-west at midday over the Top Res - this is now a rare bird in lowland Barnsley and less than annual occurrence here now.
A count of 100 Goldeneye on all lakes is high for January (the peaks are usually in late February and March) and includes a good number of juvenile birds suggesting a good previous breeding season. Goosander 22 were on the Top Res and a total of 24 Great Crested Grebes on all waters.
At least 4 Chiffchaff are still looking happy around the Low Lake sewage works but no sign of the 'Siberian Chiffchaff' for a few days now.
The weather spoilt the gull roost with heavy rain for the last hour before dark and nothing unusual was picked out.
