Carlton Marsh

Overnight snow (c1 inch) flattened most of the reed beds thereby making the area look much bigger showing more open water. However, nothing was moving and there wasn't much in the way of wildfowl except for the usual Gadwall, 4 Shovelers and 1 Tufted Duck. The resident pair of Mute Swans were happy enough keeping the water free of ice shadowed by 12 Coot.

Around 15 Chaffinches (a good number for this site) and up to 10 Great Tits and a few Blue Tits were ground feeding together when a female Sparrowhawk flashed at them.

8 Redwings and a Song Thrush were feeding on Haws near the car park entrance.

This Collared Earthstar was found this week on the embankment.

Wintersett - How Psycho the Yellow-legged Gull got his name. 13.05.2012

 Anglers CP:   13.05.2012

This monster was still present on the shallows this evening, still scoffing goose eggs and  harrasing just about everything - Greylags, BHGs, Oycs, Common Terns. At one point it was chasing an Oyc all over the lake when it turned its attentions to a passing 1st summer Herring Gull which it knocked into the water, kicked about a bit and and then hounded till it (the HG) scarpered off to the north... Think its a bit of a psycho!

Our wildlife group were busy again this morning strimming around the bird hide and raking off cuttings on the embankment. Meanwhile BMBC bereavement services arrived to transport and fit the new Memorial Seat for our dear friend and colleague, Elaine Evans, who passed away earlier this year. Elaine was passionate about butterflies and moths as you can see by the design of the new seat. Paid for by her friends with a little help from our group.

By arrangement with BMBC Nature Reserves & Parks Officer, Russ Boland.

The resident Tawny Owl was sitting high up in the Sycamore again and 2 Cetti's Warblers sang.

A Little Egret was present with 2 Common Gulls along with 14 Teal and 6 Shovelers.

20 Fieldfare and 20 Redwings flew north and up to 3 Goldcrests were around. (JP/L & A Corrall)

3 Small Copper, 1 Small White and a male Migrant Hawker were enjoying the sun (C. Parkin).

As was a small 18 inch to 2ft Grass Snake, our latest date ever.

Carlton Marsh

We were busy this morning putting a new Barn Owl box up, my thanks to Dave Standish, John Finch and Edward Steadman for a cracking job well done.

The Tawny Owl was posing again at around 09.00hrs (Steve Grove). A Redpoll and about 5 Siskins were with a flock of Goldfinch, 2 cetti's sang and 4 Buzzards were riding the thermals.

Two skeins of geese reported at 16.20hrs heading east were probably Pink Feet.

A lone migrant Hawker was also enjoying the sunshine.
