Carlton Marsh

 A female Goldeneye was on the wader scrape at 07.20hrs but it gone by 10.00hrs (Keith Bannister).

21 grounded Pink Feet Geese exited the top field at 09.26hrs (Steve Grove).

This afternoon a 'Redhead' Goosander and a Shelduck were on the wader scrape at 15.51hrs. Also present on the main scrape 3 Tufted Ducks, the Whooper Swan, 2 Water Rails, and male and female Tawny Owl called at dusk (Dave Standish).

This morning Cormorant, 20 Teal, Little Grebe, 30 Redwing, Green & Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Buzzard and Water Rail.

A Fox was prowling around the wader scrape and some fresh Velvet Shank fungi was found growing from an old fence rail. (L. & A. Corrall/R. Laverack/CG).

30 species included Greenfinch, Grey Wagtail, 2 Buzzard, 45 Fieldfare and 20 Redwing.

4 Peacock butterflies and 12 Herald Moths were hibernating in a small cave in the rocks.

Pinkfeet c 150 w over Mapplewell at 9-25 am. Hunting Barn Owl near Cawthorne on South Lane near small lanes farm at 4-15 pm.

 9 birds were ringed this morning: 

Highlights were 3 Lesser Redpoll, 1 Goldcrest, 3 Redwing, 1 Blackbird.

Today's highlights included 15 Greylags, 20 Redwing, 50 Fieldfare east, 7 Siskin, Redpoll and Treecreeper. The Whooper Swan was feeding in the rape field again (Richard Laverack/CG).

Wintersett + Vis.Mig. + Gull Roost 26.11.2022

 Anglers CP + Vis.Mig:

A juvenile Great Northern Diver flew in from the west, and dropped on at 09.30hrs. 

It wasn't seen from late morning onwards.  

Great White Egret 1,  Raven 5,  Lesser Redpoll 50.

Wigeon 112 + 118 WRes.  Shoveler 27 + 47 WRes.  Teal 38 + 2 WRes..

Going west:  

Starling 13.  Blackbird 2.  

Going south:  

Fieldfare 102.  Redwing 291.  Meadow Pipit 1.  Goldfinch 4,

Wintersett Res:    

A Canada X Greylag hybrid was on this morning. 

A male Cetti's Warbler was in the boathouse reeds.  

A Great White Egret was roosting in the ruin field.

Wintersett Gull Roost:

A 1st winter Med Gull amongst 14,000 BH Gulls on the TR roost this evening.

Also c1,000 Common Gulls in roost. 
 
It seems the Great Northern Diver only stayed for an hour and left unseen.

 Anglers CP:

Teal 27. + 1 Wintersett Res..    Cormorant 15 + 7 Wintersett Res..

A Raven flew over at 09.45hrs.  

Wintersett Res:

Little Grebe 15.   A Chiffchaff was on the north west bank.

Barnsley Council Rangers hard at work cutting back overhanging trees on the embankment to let some light in for wildflowers etc.

There is very little in the way of wildfowl at the moment except for the Whooper Swan, a Cormorant, a few Teal, Mallard, Gadwall and Water Rail. Both immature Buzzards were present (Chris Parkin).

Wintersett + Gull Roost 24.11.2022

Anglers CP: 

A skein of 66 Pink-footed Geese flew north west.

Cold Hiendley Res:

A Chiffchaff and a Kingfisher were on the west bank..

All the gulls roosted on Wintersett Res whilst I was sat in Anglers CP hide out of the rain. Amused myself by counting Common Gulls passing over from the north,  total 165 with a bonus adult Mediterranean Gull also south to Wintersett Res..

The Whooper Swan is still around, it has been feeding in an adjacent oil seed rape field for the last few mornings but was back on the main scrape this morning.

This morning Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 3 Goldcrests, 3 Mistle Thrushes, 20 Redwings, Water Rail, and a Cettis Warbler sang in the reeds near Ralph's seat (Les & Andrew Corrall) There was no sign of the Whooper Swan for the 3rd day!

A Woodcock was on the Pol.   2 Pintail were on the lake. 

 A male Cetti's Warbler was in the south west corner.

Hare Park:

A Raven flew over.

Wintersett Res:

A Water Rail was in the boathouse reeds.  5 Whooper Swans flew over east.

3 male Cetti'sWarblers were heard -boathouse reeds, north east corner + west bank.

Pink-footed Goose 1 on north bank. Shelduck 2 + 1 ACP.  Snipe 1. Kingfisher 1.

Lesser Redpoll 50 on west bank clump.

Odonata WRes:

Willow Emerald egg laying scars were seen on Willow in north west corner.

Cetti's Warbler 1.

Hare Park:

Green Woodpecker 1.

Anglers CP:  

2 Ravens were in the back fields. 

42 birds were ringed this morning.    

Highlights were:- 30 Lesser Redpoll,  

2 Redwing,  1 Blackbird,  1 Goldcrest,  

1 Treecreeper and 1 Common Redpoll.

Little Egret, 2 Mute Swans and 6 Teal. Also Goldcrest, Green Woodpecker, 2 Starlings, 12 Redwings and a Song Thrush (K. Banister/L & A Corrall).

c50 Golden Plover headed south into the Dearne Valley over the Newtown Estate in Cudworth at 15.20hrs (CG).
