Wintersett, Saturday

Your usual correspondent is away travelling again (Thailand looking for Spoon-billed Sandpiper since you ask).
A Merlin flew high north-west at midday over the Top Res - this is now a rare bird in lowland Barnsley and less than annual occurrence here now.
A count of 100 Goldeneye on all lakes is high for January (the peaks are usually in late February and March) and includes a good number of juvenile birds suggesting a good previous breeding season. Goosander 22 were on the Top Res and a total of 24 Great Crested Grebes on all waters.
At least 4 Chiffchaff are still looking happy around the Low Lake sewage works but no sign of the 'Siberian Chiffchaff' for a few days now.
The weather spoilt the gull roost with heavy rain for the last hour before dark and nothing unusual was picked out.
