Pretty dire today in the hills with a biting wind whipping straight at myself and Mr Tyke ..
Seen today were a common buzzard, a kestrel, a few lapwings, at least 1 golden plover (heard only) and then finally at 4:10 a female black grouse fed briefly in the top of one of the trees in the plantation .. Very brief views though as it then dropped back down onto the wall and then disappeared into the undergrowth ..

1 Waxwing at (Les Corrall)
2 Buzzards, Cormorant, Redpoll, Green & Great Spot Woodpeckers, Water Vole, and a Pipistrelle at dusk. A pair of Longtailed Tits were starting to construct a nest and Coal Tit, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush and Reed Bunting were among the songsters providing a spring feel to the day.
Cudworth Common today
9 Wigeon & 17 Tufted Duck, Green Woodpecker, Skylark 10 singing and several pairs of Lapwing in situ.

Little change from yesterday;- Shelduck 7, Pintail 1 drake, Wigeon 49, Gadwall 58, Tufted 45, Pochard 26, Water Rail 1, Oystercatcher 2, Golden Plover 21.
Houghton Washlands;- devoid of birds again, no idea why because it looks so inviting?
Ferrymoor;- Pochard 5, no sign of Ringed Plovers in my brief visit, presumably they had been flushed.

Wintersett - Drake Smew a.m. 03.03.13
Cloudy but mild and still. The paths around Anglers CP, Haw Park Wood and the track to the west bank of Wintersett Res are drying out and are passable without wellies.
Wintersett Res: The Drake Smew was revisiting, having not been seen here since the 15th February. Also here a Redwing and 57 Canada Geese. The first dandelion was flowering on the track to the west bank.
Anglers CP: The female Long-tailed Duck, the Redshank and 4 Oystercatchers were still present.
Haw Park Wood: 1 Crossbill and 1 Siskin.
Stubbs Wood: Green Woodpecker 1 male calling.
Wintersett Res: The Drake Smew was revisiting, having not been seen here since the 15th February. Also here a Redwing and 57 Canada Geese. The first dandelion was flowering on the track to the west bank.

The sound of Spring- Curlews
Winscar Res. today had a taste of spring when 11 Curlews flew north. There were also 6 Ravens around that area. (Mick Cunningham).
Wintersett update
Twelve Buzzards were in the sky at the same time this afternoon viewable from the Country Park enjoying the spring thermals. Oystercatcher 4 and Golden Plover 62. Four Crossbills flew south over the Country Park including two 'red' males (they really ought to be breeding somewhere at this time of year). The Top Res gull roost was fairly disappointing and has probably broken up for the spring;- GBBGull 5, LBBGull 11, and Herring Gull 17. Finally a Bittern was sat up roosting in its usual reedbed at dusk.

Frost early morning, WRes 90 % ice, Anglers CP 50% ice. Sunny, blue skies and a very warm 12 degrees by midday so the water was opening up quickly
Anglers CP: The first moving Meadow Pipit of Spring flew NW. The female Long-tailed Duck, a Redshank and a Water rail were present.
Walton Hall: The Barnacle Goose was still with the Canada Goose flock.

Old Moor highlights: 3 Bitterns Reedbeds, Water Rail, Smew (redhead), 40 Goosander, 20+ Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatchers, Redshank, 10 Herring Gulls, 20 Common Gulls. The Lesser Black-backed Gulls are now firmly holding territory. A third-winter Yellow-legged Gull was on The Mere banking late afternoon before being seen-off by the Lesser Black-backs at 4.15 (Jeff Wragg).

Yesterday nice and sunny and plenty of folk about. Today no sun and cold hardly anybody out!!! Anyway ::: Oyster Catchers, Snipe, Little and Great crested Grebe,Gadwall,Shoveler, lapwing and 5 Heron all together..... :-) Bullfinch,Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Robin,Long Tailed, Blue and Great Tits in feeding areas.. ..

On the open water were 4 Little Grebe, 2 Mute Swan, 2 Greylag, 46 Gadwall, 17 Pochard, 15 Tufted, 11 Teal, 9 Mallard, 4m+2f Shoveler, 4 Wigeon, 1m+1f Goldeneye, 337+ BH Gull, 15 Common Gull and 2 Herring Gull(1x1st year,1x2ndyear). Also present 2 Grey Heron, 12 Canada Geese, 4 Oystercatcher, 1 Peregrine, 1 Kestrel and 1 Grey Wagtail.
