EDDERTHORPE FLASH Friday 20th April
Shelduck 1, Teal 26, Tufted 30, Shoveler 6, Avocet 2, Oystercatcher 1, LRP 2, Ringed Plover 1, Arctic Tern 1 north 06.15, White Wagtail 1. The river levels are now subsiding and thankfully it did not overflow into the flash.
Just a note about this and something for the readers to think about; at the other side of the rive Dearne from Edderthorpe Ings is Houghton Washland owned by the Environment Agency. Houghton Washland has a principle use of holding flood water from the River Derarne but is currently used for farming. Edderthorpe Ings which is privately owned (RSPB) is flooded before Houghton Washland. That is to say nests of ground breeding birds such as redshank and lapwing are allowed to be submerged on RSPB owned land before the farmer at the other side of the river is allowed to lose his crop on publically owned land. Is this because Houghton Washland spillway from the river is slightly further down stream than Edderthorpe Ings? No, this cannot be the case because as we all know Wath Ings floods before Wombwell Ings. In my opinion the welfare of breeding wading birds (including avocet a Schedule 1 breeding bird) is more important than a few areas of corn.
