Yesterday (15/2/25). After a thorough search for the Bittern we couldn't find it. However, during the morning 2 Ravens alighted on a large mound of earth at Lidster's recycling yard. They called repeatedly and were mobbed by several magpies before they left west (K. Bannister/N. Lunn).

Sunday16/2/25
The Bittern climbed the reeds at 16.15hrs in good light (far side reed bed from Elaine's seat using telescope) (Dave Standish).

Earlier 2m 1f Shoveler were new in, 25 Teal, Cormorant, 3 Mute Swans, 44 Canada geese, 6 Greylags, 15 Gadwall, 16 Tufted Duck, 2 Cetti's Warbler and 2 Water Rails.

A single Redpoll over the car park was new for this year. An adult Lesser BB Gull was on the scrape.

Dave Standish's perseverance paid off tonight when the elusive Bittern showed briefly at 17.20hrs from the hide.

Last seen on 28th January, we have always thought that it could still be here. This one has been very elusive right from the start, but after Dave was pretty sure it was in the reeds on the previous two nights, he proved it beyond doubt tonight with the aid of his night scope, and through his binoculars when it flapped its wings 3 times.

Carlton Marsh & Ferrymoor Flash

Carlton Marsh
On Candlemass Day we are beginning to see a slight change and early signs that spring is on its way. Tufted Duck numbers have increased from 1 in January to 15 (9m) today.

40+ Canada Geese and several Greylags are very vocal as they start to think about staking a claim to a nest site.

Although the Bittern hasn't been seen since Tuesday, we are hopeful that this elusive bird is still here somewhere.

Velvet Shank and Scarlet Elf Cup are springing up and the first Snowdrops are in bloom.

Ferrymoor Flash
Little Egret, 3 Grey Heron, 2 drake Pochard, 1 pair of Goosander, and 1 adult L.B.B. Gull.
