The Edge

Broomhill Flash mid AM- Birds present included 4 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Mute Swan, 21 Tufted Duck, 20 Gadwall, 10 Teal, 9 Wigeon, 3 Shoveler, 3 Mallard, 1 female Pochard, 1 Common Gull, 1 Kestrel, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 male  Merlin, 2 Red Legged Partridge and c30 Fieldfare.

Bolton Ings late AM- Improvement and maintenance work on the ings is not causing any undue disturbance to the birds and may actually mean more accurate counts as birds congregate on the open water. Yesterday's count of 71 Pochard ( D.Waddington) is certainly much higher than any count in recent weeks. Present on the open water today, were14 Cormorant, 4 Grey Heron, 2 Great Crested Grebe,4 Mute Swan+4juvs, 195 Greylag, 64 Gadwall, 42 Pochard, 28 Tufted, 14 Shoveler, 1 female Goldeneye and  5 Common Gull. Also noted were 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Green Woodpecker, 1 Kingfisher, 3 Jay, 2 Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, and flyover flocks of Lapwing(25 and 10)and Golden Plover(35,25,22 and 16). At the feeding area on Old Pontefract Road were 2 Willow Tit and 1 Red Admiral butterfly.
