Grimey Finch-fest!
Out on site today at West Haigh Wood, near Grimethorpe.
I became aware of a large finch flock on the SE edge of the wood a couple of weeks ago but didn't have the opportunity to check it out. An extended lunch-break revealed a large flock of linnets, with a conservative estimate of at least 180 birds frequenting a small set-a-side area. Not sure of the crop but it's certainly holding the birds, and this seems an impressive number for a winter flock.
There was around 20 chaffinches, too.
Cheers
