Carlton Marsh

This afternoons highlight were 3 Little Owls enjoying the sun and a Barn Owl inadvertently disturbed from a roost.  3 juv sparrowhawks were calling and flying over the scrape and Green Woodpecker and Jay offspring were calling at their peril.

Butterflies included Holly Blue, Comma and Peacock, but the latter is still way down on average numbers.
Dragonflies: Emperor 2 males, Brown Hawker, Emerald Damselfy c15, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter 4 males.

Dave Bamforth sent me this cracking photo of a Leopard Moth recently, it was found by his dad in Wombwell Woods a week last Wednesday.  The only modern records for Barnsley that I could find were; 1 in Wombwell in 1968 and 1 in Worsborough Country Park in 1992.

A modern phenomenon - if you visit Old Moor right now there seems to be more people with cameras photographing moths etc than there are people with binoculars looking for birds.
Are moths the new birds?

Could be Chris. More observers means more moths recorded thats got to be a good thing, as they are indicators of how healthy or not the environment is, which as you know affects all biodiversity.
