Main news today is the appearance of a second adult Mediterranean Gull on the Mere as well as the usual ringed adult male. The new bird has only one leg so is probably the second summer female from last year, she paired with 2E26 the juvenile reared at Old Moor in 2010. They built a nest and sat for a long time but breeding was unsuccessful, she was either inexperienced or her disability hampered her breeding efforts and she spent long periods away from the nest. She arrived on 6th May last year so is nearly 2 months earlier this time, she may be more determined to succeed this year. 2E26 arrived on 30th March last year so will she wait for him or get together with the ringed male that has never attracted a mate. Further updates to follow.
Not much other news today, Redwing 10, Goldcrest 1, Redshank 2, Goosander 6, Pochard 12 (Jeff Wragg).
Paid another late evening visit to the Reedbeds, no sight or sound of any Bitterns tonight, Barn Owl hunting, Water Rail calling and a Green Sandpiper flew over.
