Old Moor - Saturday

At last a few signs of spring migrants, not many but a few signs. Posted earlier a cream crown Marsh Harrier this morning commuting between the Reedbeds and Bolton Ings. Not seen after 9.30 but could still be around. 2 Little Ringed Plovers and a White Wagtail new in on Wombwell Ings where there were also a Little Egret and a Whooper Swan. The regular adult Mediterranean Gull on the Mere and a second adult on the Wader Scrape wearing a Darvic ring, ring number not read but probably one of the juveniles from 2010, watch this space. The Bittern was booming as usual and a Chiffchaff was singing by the Reservoir. 5 Goldeneye and 45 Shoveler were on the Main Marsh, 32 Cormorants on the Mere and 13 Goosander on the Wader Scrape. 6 Oystercatchers and 6 Redshank were also seen on site. The sacrificial crop had plenty of birds again including 11 Brambling, 15 Yellowhammers, 50 Tree Sparrows and 70 Reed Buntings.

Last day of the month tomorrow, if no hirundines are reported it will be the first time ever (I think) that we will have reached April with no records.

Sand Martins - yes, but House Martins & Barn Swallows were regularly not recorded until early April in the 1970's & early 1980's.
