Wintersett Snow 23.03.13

Anglers CP:  It shows how bad the weather is when 6 Whooper Swans are grounded  overnight because it snowed continuously with a biting easterly wind.  This morning there was a good 4 inch (10cm) layer of snow everywhere, with much, much  deeper drifts in places.  However, the Whoopers moved on by mid afternoon, presumably when the snow stopped.
Birds moving in snowy or cold weather always seem to fly into the wind no matter what the direction.
Flying through east today were:  Redwing 27,  Meadow Pipit 2,  Starling 16,  Fieldfare 7,  Skylark 2 and Golden Plover 13.
Also here - female Long-tailed Duck,  Shelduck 2,  Goosander 1 and Teal 11.
Wintersett Res:Water Rail 1  and a  Chiffchaff  was on the east bank.
Old Royson Flash: Pink-footed Goose 1
Fitzwilliam: A flock of 80 Waxwing near Catchpenny crossroads.
