Old Moor - Tuesday

Sightings from Old Moor today included the following :- Bittern booming on the Reedbeds, adult Mediterranean Gull with BTO ring and missing primary that has been with us for the last 2 years. This evening a first year Yellow Legged Gull was on the mere as well as 6 Oystercatchers, 18 Goosanders and 12 Goldeneye. A male Stonechat was on the path to the reedbeds and 40 Meadow Pipits and 52 Redwing were in the meadow adjacent to the path. Around the visitor centre were 4 Brambling, 6 Yellowhammers, 50+ Tree Sparrows and the male Blackcap.

More good news for the Bitterns today as approx. 2000 (300kg) of Rudd were released into the Reedbeds. The snow has flattened about 30% of the reeds on the reedbeds but they should recover once it has melted.

Just got back from Spain where there are thousands of Swifts and Hirundines at the moment waiting for the weather to get better before they migrate further North. Dont know when they will get here though as the forecast for the next 10 days isn't going to see much change. This year could be the latest Spring for quite some time, we will have to wait and see.
