Wintersett WOW! 26.09.12

An outstanding day here at Anglers.
A phone call  from Pugneys to alert us that an Osprey  was coming our way resulted in a gathering on the hill vis. mig. watchpoint.  Half an hour later, at 10.10hrs, a shout of "It's coming!" focussed all eyes on a large raptor coming in from the south west.  As it flew closer it was obviously not an Osprey, although it had a pale head.  As it went past, at close range, it became evident  that is was an adult ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD,  with a white tail and prominent black tail band clearly visible.  It carried on a level flight path away to the north east.  What a cracking new bird for the Wintersett list - presumably having been swept over the North Sea in the north easterly gales.
Later on at 10.58 a Short-eared Owl flew high over ACP to the north west, while being mobbed by corvids, before eventually dropping into hay fields north west of the CP at 11.03 hrs.
Earlier 3 Bar-tailed Godwit flew SE over ACP  at 08.55 and 2 juvenile Black Tern were flying around Wintersett Res.
Also noted today were: Swallow 67 S,  Redpoll 15 S,  Pintail 4 SW, Golden Plover 2 E
Hobby 1,  Dunlin 1

Very gripping but MORE than happy with the haul from Pugneys of 2-3 OSPREY thru along with a Brambling along the Castle Stream

Even though we didn't get an osprey we were so grateful for your call because it meant we were on the hill when the RLB flew through.
We think the ospreys probably turned and followed the motorway valley south which is not visible from Anglers.

Certainly the last bird went that way and the 2nd was quite west of you. probably 3 birds in total! congrats on the sweep by the way - spend wisely;) Scored in Whitburn

How lucky are you? We wondered if you'd manage to get through all the flood chaos.
I'm not sure how much I've won - but I'll try not to let the money go to my head!
