Old Moor - Friday

An excellent day today at Old Moor with two good records backed up with other goodies. Firstly Kittiwakes, 39 dropped onto the Mere prior to 11.40, 21 left immediately  and the other 18 left within the next 6 hours leaving 1 at 16.00 and none at 16.30. Added to the 39 were the 17 seen flying east over Broomhill at 18.13 making a total of 56 birds creating a new area maximum. The previous area maximum was 36 seen on the 13th March 1988, incredibly almost 25 years ago to the day.

Secondly a second male Bittern was seen in the Mere Reedbed with the regular male still booming from the Reedbeds. Presumably the regular male is not allowing the second male onto "his" territory on the Reedbeds.

Other sightings today not already posted included the following:- Ringed Plover 2, Oystercatcher 6, Water Rail 3, Green Sandpiper 1, Goosander 25+, Blackcap, Brambling 2 and finally 5 Waxwings over Broomhill Village at 06.50.
