Newmillerdam - 7 January 2017

Calm, dry day and all the ice had gone from the lake.

100 pink-footed geese flew overhead west at 9am which was a nice start. Visited Seckar Wood and picked up green woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker and kestrel on the heathland and redwing (5) in the fields west of the wood.

On the lake at Newmillerdam, Canada goose (31), moorhen (8), coot (32), goosander (10 - 5m/5f), grey heron (1), tufted duck (27), mallard and mute swan (6).

The mute swans are 1 adult and 5 of last summer's sygnets. The other adult was seen dead in the water today. The corpse looked in reasonable condition, so I'd imagine it must have died in late December.

Plenty of chatter from coal tits today (8) and a mistle thrush in the arboretum. Also picked up my first jays (3) from the site this year. Another kestrel was sat on the wires again at Pennine Community off Wood Lane.
