LDV Tues

Another quiet day. Little Egret and Green Sand' at Broomhill Flash this morning. Evening visit to Old Moor where there were plenty of birds but somewhat lacking in variety, especially waders. Goosander, 1300 Golden Plovers, 4 Green Sands, Common Gull and Barn Owl were the highlights.

Yes, things are a changing.
You will obviously remember a time when during October we used to get little stints and curlew sands - the arrival of these species signalled the end of the 'wader season'. Sadly it doesn't seem to happen like that anymore. July was never considered a month when there was much wader passage, but now it is becoming an important month. Therefore does the water level on Wath Ings need to be managed according to this change in the seasons? My thoughts are that if there are no breeding birds that actually breed on the water such as little grebe, coot etc - then water levels on Wath Ings should be lowered at the beginning of July.
We had a good wader passage this year in the Broomhill area during July - all the waders were on Wombwell Ings and the Wader Scrape. My thought are that if the Mecca is not up and running during the autumn passage, then no matter how good it is at the other sites, we will still be missing out on a shed load of goodies.
