Common Scoter 1 male.   A Water Rail heard on the north bank.

Anglers CP:

Goosander 1 male.   Little Egret 1.  Little Grebe 7.

Cold Hiendley Res:

Willow Emerald Damselfly egg scars,  on  Crack Willow,  north east bank.

Carlton Marsh

It has has been very quiet of late, most of our wildfowl left during the floods. I suppose with this much water around they are spoiled for choice as to where they can go to feed. Today just a pair of Mute Swans (a different pair), 2 Cormorants, 2 Tufted Ducks, a Grey Wagtail and a Cetti's Warbler.

180 Linnets on nearby telegraph wires is a good number at any time of year though (K. Bannister).

Wintersett Fungi Foray 22.10.2023

There was a  good turn out  for the Fungi Foray in Haw Park Wood,

led by Francis Hickenbottom and Hiram Windgust.

Francis gave us lots of interesting information about  the fungi found on the walk.  He told  us what each part of the fungus was called and explained what to look for and described the smell!   Some were very pungent and others had very little smell.

The photos show the wide range of colour and shape.

A Rock Pipit flew north and a flock of 60 Skylarks flew south at 09.00hrs. Steve Denny.

The Rock Pipit moved to the east bank, but was still present at lunch time - Chris Swaine.

Flocks of Redwings were steadily moving west over Ryhill village this morning.I was in the north bank field,  and counted 980 in the first thirty minutes.  More flocks followed.

The Redwing flocks kept coming.

I held on until 10.15hrs, as the farmer was ploughing the field, by which time I had counted 2045 Redwings!   By 10.40hrs the total was 3145.Redwings still going west, but I had to move off, as the farmer was coming too close.

Total count

980 by 09.35 hrs + 830  by 09.55hrs

+ 1220 by 10.15hrs  + 475 by 12.40 hrs + 620 by 1245hrs

Ewden valley 8/10/23.

Moorland burning on broomhead moor all day with huge clouds of smoke going in the Penistone direction. Fortunately the top end of the valley was clear. Going south c 300 Redwings, c 100 Meadow Pipits, c 20 Skylarks, c 15 Redpoll. Hard work for raptors again with 1 Red Kite, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 C Buzzard, 3+ Kestrels. Raven 1, Stonechat 3.

Wintersett + Vis.Mig. + Ringing 08.10.2023

Anglers CP: Vis.Mig.  @Fitzybirder

A Woodcock was flushed  from the Vis. Mig. Benches early this morning.

A Pintail flew south.    11 Redwing, and  6 Fieldfare  flew west.

A Cetti's Warbler was in bushes on the path to the hide.

A decent enough session once the fog cleared. Managed to get Redwing over the 1.5k mark, just, but the birds had largely given up before I did. The first (11) did not come through until 09.50, then very slow for the next hour with peak numbers (and biggest flocks of 170 & 150) just prior to midday. Tailed off quickly after 1 pm. Plenty of buzzard activity early afternoon inc a few that seemed to be going straight through. The slightly raggy looking marsh harrier was a different bird to yesterday
