Raven 1 on pylons but mobile. Pinkfeet c 260 w at 8-57am , Grey Partridge covey 4. Flocks of Woodpigeon moving s, c 650. C Snipe 10, GS Pecker 1, Parakeets 1+ heard only at oxbow, Meadow Pipit 14.

 A female Goldeneye spent the day on the wader scrape (Richard Laverack). It was the first since 2016 and our 20th record.

Late butterflies: 1 Speckled Wood, 1 Small Copper and 1 Peacock, the first here since 3rd of August. Also 2 Migrant Hawkers and 4 Common Darters (Chris Parkin).

Good morning visit with 2 Jack Snipe, one of which showed well on the ground. 2 Peregrines on a pylon, 2 Stonechats, 3 Cetti's, fem Goosander still on the river. 1 Green Pecker.

27/10/22 4 Siskin, 1 Redpoll, 4 Cormorant, Kingfisher and 12 Common Gull (CG).

28/10/22 morning 
Treecreeper, Green Woodpecker, 6 Fieldfare, 2 Cormorant. Also 2 Migrant Hawker, 4 Common Darter and a Speckled Wood butterfly (L & A. Corrall).

Cetti's Warbler, 2 Water Rail, 3 Buzzard included in immatures, 20 Starling, 6 Redwing and 16 Fieldfare came into roost (CG).
Belated reports of up to 2 Barn Owls hunting fields to the east of the reserve over the past two weeks at dusk (Gemma Shearing).

1 Painted Lady, 1 Small Copper and 1 Speckled wood enjoying the exceptionally warm weather.

The highlights for today were; 23 Teal, 9 Common Gull, Green Woodpecker, Siskin, and 40 Pink Feet Geese west at 08.58hrs (K. Bannister/G. Miller).

A Migrant Hawker and a late Small Copper were flying (CG).

Ferrymoor - Cudworth Common

 A Great White Egret was on the flashes on the old Grimethorpe pit site at 16.25hrs and a Small White butterfly looked really fresh (CG).

3 Buzzards, Grey Wagtail and 2 Grey Partridges.

Butterfly sightings included 1 Red Admiral, 4 Small Copper, 1 Small White and 1 Small Tortoiseshell, the first for two months! (Chris Parkin)

Carlton Marsh

The highlight of this morning was a male Stonechat at the back of the wader scrape. 

Also present Goldcrest, 4 Redwing, 2 Cormorant, 11 Common Gull and 5 Shoveler (L & A Corrall).

A Migrant Hawker and a Common Darter were flying in the afternoon sunshine (CG).

Very steady with Snipe not disturbed. Fem Stonechat 1, Peregrine 1 on pylon the first for this autumn and winter. Cetti's 5, Fieldfare 85, Meadow Pipit 8, Green Pecker 2, Goldcrest 1.

A Noctule type bat was over the northern end at 15.25hrs.

onto the Wintersett list, until we spotted some during yesterday's foray.

This morning 3 Snipe, 1 Green Sandpiper, 3 Cormorant and 2 drake Shoveler (L. & A. Corrall).

This afternoon 3 Water Rails and a Cetti's Warbler called, c100 Starlings came into roost along with groups of 25 and 9 Redwing. Also of note a Redpoll the first since February!

Wintersett Res: 

A Bittern flew out of the boathouse reed bed towards Botany Bay  at 07.33hrs.  

Goldeneye 6 (only 1 male) + 1 ACP. 

3 male Cetti's Warblers: 1 north east bank + 1 boathouse reeds WRes. +  1 south east corner ACP,

Botany Dell: Chiffchaff 1.

Anglers CP: 

A Rock Pipit was in the north east corner.   Little Egret 1. 

14 Snipe and 23 Teal were in the shallows.

Wintersett + Superb Vis.Mig 19.10.2022

Wintersett, Wednesday highlights per @grayspeight -A superb vismig  morning.

Redwing reached a record breaking 22,430,  all south or west!  

There were an additional 600 in the 2 hours prior to dusk, 

which brought the total to an incredible  23,030 ,

with many birds only just visible, at a great height, below the cloud base.

Going west: Fieldfare 536,   Pink-footed Goose 425.  

A Spoonbill went south at 08.32hrs, then flew back north at 10.25hrs. 

A Hawfinch, 7 Brambling and 1930 Wood Pigeons were counted.  

A Red Kite flew low over back fields at 17.25hrs.

Comments: Smashed last year’s Redwing record of 13,820 by a considerable margin!  

After nothing in the first 30 minutes, 20 went through at 07.30, then a rapid increase as flocks of up 400 started to come through from the east,  often very high, with few being  picked up on call, reaching  5,000 by 08.30;   7,400 by 08.50;  11,000 by 09.27; 15,100 by 09.54; 17,000 by 10.14;  19,150 by 10.40 and finally  22,000 by 13.40!! 

Just about everything else will be under counted, particularly finches most of which were left unidentified.

5 Redwing and a Mute Swan dropped in after dawn (K. Bannister).

Later Green Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, 9 Teal and 5 Shoveler plus 7 Common Darter and 1 Willow Emerald on the dike where the hide was. Up to 2 have been seen at this site almost daily over the past week (Les & Andrew Corrall).

21 birds caught this morning included a re-trapped female Cetti's Warbler, a female Goldcrest, 2 Reed Buntings and 1 Yellow bunting (CG).

Butterflies on show were 3 Speckled Wood, 9 Small Copper, and 5 Small White (Chris Parkin).

Steady but more than expected in the near summer conditions. Raven 1 pair, 1 Green Sand, 1 imm Stonechat. C Snipe 2, Cetti's 2, Meadow Pipit 3, Goldcrest 1. Green and GS Peckers seen and noisy. Yesterday 6 calling Fieldfares flew e.

 A Mute Swan and 12 Common Gulls were on the wader scrape. A Great Spotted Woodpecker called, and a Green Woodpecker was 'Anting' in the northern meadow. A Cetti's Warbler and a Kingfisher were on the scrape.

A Bearded Tit was calling in west bank marsh 11.40hrs, flew to boathouse reeds at 11.55hrs.

Storrs Mill to Ardsley Viaduct (along the Dearne)

3 Buzzard, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Mute swan with 2 cygnets, 2 Little Grebe, Cormorant and 3 Grey Heron.

Butterflies included 6 Red Admiral, 3 Comma, 3 Speckled Wood, 3 Small Copper, 4 Small White and 1 GV White. A male Vapourer moth was airborne as was Ichnuemon stramentarious (Chris Parkin).

Water Pipit flew w towards sewage farm. No sign of it in the usual places. Not much else , 2 Sparrowhawks, Kingfisher and 2 Chub from sf bridge.

A butterfly count produced 1 Common Blue, 5 Small Copper, 4 Red Admiral, 4 Speckled Wood and 7 Small White. 2 Migrant Hawkers (Chris Parkin).

11 Whooper Swans were in early this morning, then left south east.

13 Whoopers dropped on at  09.30hrs.   Little Egret 1.  Kingfisher 1.  

Cetti's Warbler 1 male.   Grey Wagtail 2.  No sign of the Great White Egret today.

A Little Egret was present. Wood Pigeons appear to be on the move now with c70 west at 07.41hrs and 16 west at 07.44hrs. Along with 35 Redwings west at 07.41hrs + 6 west at 07.44hrs. Then 22 over Oulton Drive Cudworth at 08.10hrs (Keith Bannister).
