Wintersett and South Kirkby 30.04.19

7 - 12 degrees with scattered cloud and a light southerly.
Wintersett Res: Garden Warbler 3 males - north east bank. west bank + Pol ACP.  Common Tern 4.  Yellow Wagtail 1m west bank field.  Sedge Warbler 5m.  Siskin 1 flew north west.  Goldeneye 1f.  Mallard 2 vs young.  Moorhen 5 young north west reedbed. 
Anglers CP:  Little Ringed Plover 1.   Teal 1m + 1f.  Shoveler 1m + 1f.  Pochard 1m.  Snipe 1.

South Kirkby: 
The Iberian Chiffchaff was  reported this morning.  The Ferruginous Duck wouldn't have been seen due to fog, but hasn't been reported all day.

Wombwell Ings - Highlight was standing on the bridge across from the Old Moor Tavern and watching at eye level, and no more than 3 metres away, a Treecreeper searching for food on the underside of a branch. Present were 4 Mute Swans, 7 Greylag, 3 Canada Geese, 21 Gadwall, 5 Mallard, 4 Teal, 3 Shoveler, 2 Tufted Duck, 2 Pochard, 21 Coot, 2 Moorhen, 6+ Lapwing, 3 Redshank, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Snipe, 35 BH Gull, 1 Kingfisher, 8+ Skylark, c20 House Martin, 10+ Swallow, 3 Yellow Wagtail, 2 Pied Wagtail, 1 Meadow Pipit, 1 Mistle Thrush and 2 Linnet. Singing in Old Broomhill Park were 2 Blackcap, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and 1 Song Thrush.
Broomhill Flash - Noted were 2 Mute Swan, 27 Canada Geese, 2 Shelduck, 25 Gadwall, 15 Tufted Duck, 8 Mallard, 3 Shoveler, 1 Pochard, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Little Grebe, 19 Coot, 4 Lapwing,  2 Oystercatcher, 2 Common Sandpiper, 1 Black Tailed Godwit, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 2 LBB Gull and 1 Swift. P. Kent also had 2 Mediterranean Gull and 1 Golden Plover early morning.
TPT - Singing males 12 Chiffchaff, 9 Willow Warbler, 5 Blackcap, 4 Whitethroat, 1 Sedge Warbler and 1 yaffling Green Woodpecker.
Bolton Ings - On the open water were 14 Mute Swan, 7 Greylag, 1 Canada Goose, 9 Gadwall, 8 Mallard, 4m+2f Pochard, 4 Tufted Duck, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Little Grebe, 1 Cormorant, 43+6y Coot, 2 LBB Gull and 1 Common Gull. Also present were 1 Bittern (flying towards Old Moor at 12.15pm ), 2 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Grey Wagtail, a singing Song Thrush, a reeling Grasshopper Warbler and 1 Bullfinch.

Wintersett + South Kirkby. A Ferruginous Duck joins the Iberian Chiffchaff at Carr Lane 29.04.19

7 - 10 degrees with 4//8 cloud and a cool, light south easterly.
Wintersett Res: A Whimbrel flew over calling at 07.30hrs.   Common Tern 4.
Goldeneye 1 immature male + 2 females.   Shoveler 3 + 1 male ACP.   Teal 1 male and 1 female.  Mallard 8 vs young + 1 s/m young
Anglers CP: Garden Warbler 1 male on the Pol.   Yellow Wagtail 1 Pol fields + 1 north bank WRes..  Canada Goose 4vs young + 3 vs young.

South Kirkby - Carr Lane Pond
Dave Bamforth successfully twitched the Iberian Chiffchaff  for his Barnsley list, then, as he returned up Carr lane he  paused to look over the pond.  He was surprised to find a fine drake Ferruginous duck swimming around with a group of Tufted Ducks.    The unringed Feruginous Duck performed well,  and even made a short flight.  All salient ID features confirmed it was genuine.  He alerted the Twitterati and another twich was on.

A Common Tern was perched on one of the goal posts on the wader scrape before leaving south at 07.33hrs (Keith Bannister). 
An Oystercatcher dropped in at 11.05hrs and a Garden Warbler was singing on territory (Dave Smith). 
Also of note this afternoon 8 Skylarks, Treecreeper and 45 Stock Doves (CG).

Butterflies included 19 Speckled Wood, 4 Peacock, 17 Orange-tip, 3m Brimstone, 1 Large White and 8 White sp.(Chris Parkin).

Wombwell Ings - Present were 2 Mute Swan, 5 Canada Geese, 3 Greylag, 1 Shelduck, 21 Gadwall, 6 Teal, 4 Tufted Duck, 5 Mallard, 1 Shoveler, 1 Pochard, 1 Cormorant, 15 Coot, 2 Moorhen, 2 Red Legged Partridge, 8+ Lapwing, 2 Oystercatcher, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 2 Redshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, 35 BH Gull, c20 House Martin, c10 Swallow, 5+ Skylark and 3 Pied Wagtail. Singing in Old Broomhill Park were 2 Blackcap, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Whitethroat and 1 Lesser Whitethroat.
Broomhill Flash - Highlight was a Swift amongst 20+ House Martin. Noted were 2 Mute Swan, 3 Canada Geese, 24 Gadwall, 20 Tufted Duck, 6 Mallard, 3 Shoveler, 1 Teal, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Little Grebe, 1 Cormorant, 18 Coot, 2 Moorhen, 1 Kestrel, 8+ Lapwing, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Common Sandpiper, and 2 LBB Gull. A Cuckoo was heard calling by D. Waddington in Broomhill village.
TPT -Singing males 10 Chiffchaff, 9 Willow Warbler, 6 Blackcap, 2 Whitethroat,  and 1 yaffling Green Woodpecker. Also present were 1 Buzzard and 2 Bullfinch.
Bolton Ings - Highlight was a Bittern flying westwards along the front edge of the eastern pool towards Old Moor at 12.13pm. On the open water were 8 Mute Swan, 3 Canada Geese, 3 Greylag, 11 Tufted Duck, 5 Mallard, 3m+1f Pochard, 4 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Little Grebe, 4 Cormorant, 58+7y Coot, 2 Herring Gull and 1 Common Gull. Also present were 1 Buzzard, 2 Kingfisher, 2 Green Woodpecker, 1 Grey Wagtail and 2 reeling Grasshopper Warbler.

Wintersett + South Kirkby Iberian Chiffchaff 28.04.19

7 - 9 degrees with sun  and a very light easterly.
Anglers CP: Common Sandpiper 3.  Little Ringed Plover 2. Lesser Redpoll 1. Teal 5. Pochard 1m.  Yellow Wagtail 1 north.  Dunlin 1.  Great Black-backed Gull 2.  Garden Warbler 1m Pol.
Haw Park Wood: A Raven flew over east towards WRes. at 08.30hrs.
Wintersett Res: A Little Egret flew over north at 07.25hrs.  Arctic Tern 1 + 1north over ACP. Common Tern 4.    Swift 14. Cuckoo 1 west bank.  Goldeneye 2.  Cetti's Warbler 4 m.  Sedge Warbler 8m.  Reed Warbler 17m + 4m ACP..  Whitethroat 9m.  Willow Warbler 10m.  Lesser Whitethroat 1m east bank + 1m Pol ACP.   A Barn Owl flew over this evening.

Of note:
The singing Iberian Chiffcaff at South Kirkby, found by @bigpaddymartin is outside the BBSG recording area - just! The railway is the boundary and the bird is in territory about 50 metres to the NE on the wrong side. It has been as close as 20 metres this afternoon and can be heard and seen from BBSG turf.

Ewden valley / Wilthorpe marsh, 28/4/19.

Ewden this aft. Very steady in a cold nw wind. Merlin 1, Peregrine 1, Kestrel 3, C.Buzzard 5, Raven 1. Ring Ouzel 4, 1 pair of Stonechat, 55 Meadow Pipits, 2 Cuckoo calling, possibly 3, Redpoll 1 over. Lapwings on territories on broomhead moor and high up on white carr mobbing Buzzards. Wilthorpe this morning steady but a couple of surprises with a Grasshopper Warbler singing at the w end and a Redshank at the oxbow pond. Also 2 Reed Warblers, Willow Tit on the canal, 11 Sand Martins. Still no sign of any Cettis this spring.

Birds of prey on show today were Buzzard, Kestrel and Peregrine. A pair of Lapwings were supervising 3 day-old chicks on the wader scrape.

A Cuckoo was singing on nearby Shaw Lane this evening (Dave Standish).

New in today a singing Lesser Whitethroat and a Cuckoo (not singing) at 12.108hrs.
5 Herring Gulls, 1 LBB Gull, 2 Teal, Grey Wagtail and 2 broods of Greylag were on the wader scrape. 
Also present Treecreeper, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard and a male House Sparrow singing at the car park entrance (Dave Smith/CG).

Wintersett 27.04.19

7 - 10 degrees, mostly cloudy with heavy rain early evening and a cold north westerly.
Wintersett Res: Common Tern 6.  Arctic Terc 2 + 1 ACP..  Swift 8 + 4 ACP.   Yellow Wagtail 2. 
Cold Hiendley SW: Grasshopper Warbler 1male reeling. 
Anglers CP: Common Sandpiper 1.  Snipe 1.  Little Ringed Plover 2.  Teal 1m + 2f.  Wigeon 1m.   Goldeneye 1m + 2f WRes..  Goosander 1m + 1f flew south west.  Curlew 1 in back fields. 
Golf Course Pond: Kingfisher 1.
50 House Martins and 60 Sand Martins were in the area.

Carlton Marsh

New in this morning Garden Warbler and a pair of Shoveler (K. Bannister). A little later 2 LRP and a Sand Martin were on the wader scrape (D. Smith).

This evening 7 Swallows, 1 House Martin, a pair of Teal and a Fox were on the wader scrape (CG).

Storrs Mill Wood 
A Little Egret flew south, 1 Buzzard, a pair of Grey Wagtails and 35 + House Martins were feeding over the fields and a Goldcrest was singing near the Mill ruin (CG).

7 - 11 degrees with sunny with scattered, but increasing cloud, light showers in the afternoon and a southerly breeze.
Anglers CP: Wigeon 1male.  Teal 1male + 2 female.  Pochard 1 male.  Shoveler 1 male and 1 female.  Snipe 1Little Ringed Plover 2 on the shallows.
Wintersett Res: Common Tern 3.   Goldeneye 1 immature male and 2 females.  Lesser Whitethroat 1 male west bank.  Yellow Wagtail 1 north bank field and 1 over Botany.  SWIFT 1.

P. Kent also had 2 Avocet and 1 Greenshank early morning.

Wintersett Catch Up 18.04.19 - 24.04.19


Apologies for loss of updates.  My internet has been down for a week!   However, the weather has been dry with cool starts, then mostly warm to hot and sunny with all expected migrants arriving.  Here's what's been aound the area.

Thursday 18.04.19
Anglers CP: Pochard 1m.  Wigeon 7.  Teal 9. Garganey 1 drake.  Goldeneye 18.  Psycho, the adult Yellow-legged Gull came in egg hunting! 150 Fieldfare were in Hare Park.  32 Golden Plover flew south.
Wintersett Res:  Yellow Wagtail 1 north. A reed Warbler was in the boathouse reeds.  7 Oystercatcher flew over.  
Lepidoptera: Green-veined White 2 ACP.

Friday 19.04.19
Anglers CP: Snipe 2 + 1 Pol..  Teal 5.  Brambling 5 flew north east + 1 over. Garganey 1m. Pochard 2m.  Wigeon 6.  Goldeneye 15 (26 roosted)   Great Black-backed Gull 6.
Wintersett Res:  A Whimbrel flew over north at 08.34hrs. A male Wheatear was on the boathouse lawn.   Sedge Warbler 1m north bank.  Reed Warbler 2m north west bank + 1m Botany.  Cetti’s Warbler 4 males.  Shoveler 12. Cold Hiendley Village:  Whitethroat 1m. Goldcrest 1 + 1m CHRes.. + 1m Pits Wood. 
Lesser Whitethroat 1m old railway cutting to ORF. 
Moorhouse Lane Ponds: Green Sandpiper 2.

Haw Park Wood: A ringtail Hen Harrier flew west over the picnic bench area at 14.05hrs..
Anglers CP:The drake Garganey showed well, in front of the hide, this morning. Shoveler 1m + 1f.  Pochard 1m.  Teal 4.  Wigeon 1m.  Yellow Wagtail 3 + 2 CHSF.  Psycho,the adult Yellow-legged Gull came in.Little Ringed Plover 1. Great Black backed Gull 1.
Wintersett Res: A Cuckoo was seen and heard on the east bank this morning. Common Tern 7. Lesser Whitethroat 1m north east bank/Botany. Goldeneye 2m + 11 males flew north. Grasshopper Warbler 1m west bank. 
Wednesday 24.04.19 
Anglers CP: Garganey 1m.  Teal 4. 
Wintersett Res:Common Tern 2.  Shoveler 1m + 1f.  Goldeneye 1 immature male + 1 female.  Grasshopper Warbler 1 west bank.  A male Goosander flew south. A YelloWagtail was on the north bank.  A great Black-backed Gull flew over + 1 ACP.

A Little Ringed Plover, 1 pair of Teal and 28 Herring Gulls were on the wader scrape this morning. Another Sedge Warbler and another Whitethroat arrived over night, a Great Spotted Woodpecker was 'drumming' and a Kingfisher showed.

This afternoon a Red Kite flew south at 15.12hrs (Dave Smith/Geoff Miller) and was seen by 'Young Nudger' at 15.32hrs over his home on Edderthorpe Lane, Darfield. 

6 House Martins arrived on the wader scrape as the weather closed in, their number quickly increasing to 20 during a torrential downpour (DMS/GM).

36 Herring Gulls, 2 LBB Gulls and 13 Greylags were on the wader scrape this afternoon. Singing warblers included 5 Willow Warblers and 4 Reed Warblers. 

A Bee Fly was seen on the embankment in front of the second seat and a Tree Bee was 'nectering' on newly emerged Yellow Archangel flowers.

Wombwell Ings - Present were 3 Mute Swan, 5 Canada Geese, 1 Greylag, 3 Shelduck, 20 Gadwall, 12 Tufted Duck, 11 Teal, 11 Mallard, 3 Shoveler, 2 Goosander, 1 Cormorant, 12 Coot, 1 Moorhen, 4+ Lapwing, 2 Redshank, 2 Dunlin, 1 Snipe, 53 BH Gull, 1 LBB Gull, 8+ Skylark, 1 Kingfisher, 20+ Sand Martin, 2 Blackcap and 2 Chiffchaff.
 Broomhill Flash - Noted were 2 Mute Swan, 19 Canada Geese, 25 Gadwall, 18 Tufted Duck, 12 Mallard, 3 Shoveler, 3 Pochard, 3 Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 21 Coot, 6 Lapwing, and 2 LBB Gull. On the top lane J. Seeviour had 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Whitethroat and 1 Willow Warbler.
TPT - Singing males included 11 Chiffchaff, 10 Blackcap, 7 Willow Warbler and 3 Whitethroat.

Ring Ouzel 14, 1 Yellow Wagtail, Meadow Pipit 35 with 1 nest building, Wheatear 1 male, Mistle Thrush 2. Male Chaffinch briefly at upper hordron barn looked unusual. Raven 4, Peregrine 1, C. Buzzard 6, Kestrel 1 but no sign of any Merlin. Singing C Whitethroat reported at swinden lane track ford and on the down side a dead Brambling here.

Ewden valley 21/4/19, J Wasse, S Green.

More cloud would have been better for the light with annoying heat haze at distance. Still a decent afternoon with a presumed migrating rt Hen Harrier which drifted off very high north. Other raptors were Red Kite 1, Peregrine 1 imm., C Buzzard 10+, Kestrel 3, Sparrowhawk 1. Raven 2, a cracking male Stonechat, Meadow Pipit 35, Cuckoo 1, Golden Plover 3. Snipe 1 drumming, Swallow 2 on territory at the cabin along with a Stock Dove and a group of 4 Mallards mobile. 1 nearly all white Mountain Hare.

Another lovely day with temperatures in the low 20c. This morning there were new broods of Mallard (9) and Greylag Goose (5) on the wader scrape to add to the two Canada Goose goslings on the main scrape. Single Swallows (3) and a Sand Martin passed through heading north. A Snipe got up from the main scrape where 2 pairs of Tufted Duck, a pair of Teal and a Dabchick were feeding. 

Singing from their respective territories were; 7 Reed Buntings, 13 Blackcaps, 4 Reed warblers, 3 Willow Warblers and a Whitethroat, which was new in today.

Butterflies included 1m Brimstone, 46 Orange-tips and 35 Speckled Woods (Chris Parkin)

Two and half hours this aft was very steady. Calling Cuckoo at the res., 5 C Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, 2 Ravens. Oystercatcher, 2 Siskin, 2 Meadow Pipit.

3 Wheatears (2 females) were near the Symphony factory fence this morning (Les Corrall/Ralph Hibbert).

2 Buzzards circled overhead and a Cuckoo sang.

Butterflies here included 6 male Brimstone, 35 male and 1 female Orange-tip. The latter with some degree of orange on the upper wing (Chris Parkin)

Wintersett Res: An Arctic Tern flew north east at 08.40hrs..  Cetti's Warbler 5 singing males - east bank, north bank, west bank, ruin and boathouse reeds.   Willow Tit 1 south east corner.  Yellow Wagtail 1 flew northeast.  Sand Martin 450.

This morning there were 2 Little Egrets, 186 Herring Gulls and a Swallow on the wader scrape. 5 Willow Warblers, 2 Sedge Warblers and 9 Blackcaps were singing + 3 females seen and a single Redpoll is still here (Keith Bannister/Dave Smith).

Towards late afternoon a group of 8 Swallows moved through and this year's first Canada Geese goslings (2) were seen (Dave Standish).

3 - 8 degrees with 8/8 high cloud and a very cold easterly.

Anglers CP: A drake Garganey was on the shallows this morning and still present late afternoon.  Common Sandpiper 1.   2 White Wagtails visited the shallows briefly.    Yellow Wagtail 1. Brambling 1 + 1 Pol feeders + 2 WRes..  Snipe 1.  Psycho, the adult Yellow-legged Gull flew over the islands looking for eggs,  before dropping into the shallows. Teal 9.  Wigeon 12.  Pochard 5m + 2f.  Fieldfare 2 SW over.  Cormorant 10 + 1 CHRes.

Low Moor/Midhope. - Cold and very steady with Red Kite, 2 Sparrowhawk, 5 C Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 5 Ravens. Total of 22 Crossbills, c100 Woodpigeon flock, Fieldfare flock 25, Siskin 2, Meadow Pipit 4. Wilthorpe Marsh this a.m. very quiet and cold weather affecting the birds. Best here was a Green Sand and 10+ House Martins. No sign of any Water Pipits since the 7th.

This morning at 07.53hrs 98 Herring Gulls (mainly immatures) were on the wader scrape. By 08.30hrs, they had increased to 121. Elsewhere 5 Blackcaps, 2 Willow Warblers and 2 Yellowhammers were singing. (Keith Bannister/Dave Smith)

This afternoon 2 Redshanks, 77 Herring Gulls and 1 LBB Gull were on the wader scrape with the greylags and Canada Geese, as 3 House Martins shot through. Then a Swallow was hawking over the main scrape at 18.24hrs. (Dave Standish/CG)

Butterflies included 16 Orange-tips (1 female), 9 Commas, 3 Speckled Woods and a Peacock (Chris Parkin). A Holly Blue butterfly was seen at White Cross Road, Cudworth (Les Corrall). Chris Parkin also found a pristine Purple Thorn moth at Cudworth Bridges yesterday.

Anglers CP:  No sign of the Ring Ouzel this morning, but the redhead Smew was back.  60 Fieldfare were in Hare Park field.  A female Brambling was at the Pol feeders.  Shoveler 2 m + 1 f.  Teal 8.  Snipe 2.  House Martin 1 + 2 WRes..  Willow Warbler 4 m.  Ringed Plover 1.  Wigeon 18.  Pochard 4m + 2 f.  Mute Swan 6 + 2 WRes. + 2 CHRes..  Siskin 1 over.
Chris Swaine found a male Redstart  in the east bank field.  Steve Denny reports that this bird equals our earliest ever on 10/4/1952 (!),  next is 15/4/1979 and 2012.
Evening Update per Steve Denny:    A Green Sandpiper dropped onto ACP briefly at 19.50hrs,  then left north.   The redhead Smew and 53 Goldeneye roosted ACP  + 28 WRes.. 38  Great Black-backed Gull,   6 Lesser Black-backed Gull and 18 Herring Gull roosted on ACP.

4 - 9 degrees with 8/8 but decreasing cloud,  long sunny spells this afternoon.

Wintersett Res:  10 Brambling were around the ruin area.  A male Willow Warbler was on the west bank and another was at ACP.  Treecreeper 1 south bank.  A Jack Snipe was in the west bank marsh. A Peregrine flew over. 
Diptera:  A Bee Fly  Bombylius major was on ACP.

A Cuckoo was reported early morning flying over Broomhill village.

TPT - Singing males 6 Chiffchaff, 6 Blackcap and 1 yaffling Green Woodpecker. Butterflies included  3 Speckled Wood, 2 Orange Tip and 1 Peacock.
Bolton Ings - On the open the water were 7 Mute Swan, 8 Greylag, 3 Canada Geese, 8 Mallard, 5 Pochard, 4 Tufted Duck, 2 Gadwall, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Little Grebe, 3 Cormorant, 71+4y Coot and 12 Herring Gull. Also present were 1 Little Egret over east, 1 Jay, 3+ Sand Martin and 1 Grey Wagtail.

Carlton Marsh

60 Stock Doves were feeding in a nearby pasture around mid-day (Dave Smith).
On the wader scrape this afternoon Little Egret, 77 Herring Gulls and 7 LBB Gulls and Grey Wagtail. A few Martins started to move towards tea time starting with a single Sand Martin at 16.18hrs that was followed by a House Martin at 16.35hrs, 2 Sand Martins at 16.38hrs and 1 more at 17.08hrs all dashing north.

Anglers CP:  Pete Smith found a male Ring Ouzel on the reserve area this morning.  The last one was a flyover west on 2nd October 2016 and before that, there was one on  the Pol 19th - 24th April 2013!  A Greenshank dropped on the shallows, briefly.   Snipe 1.  A Little Ringed Plover 1 flew east.  Brambling 2 Pol feeders +  2 SWbank + 1 SE corner WRes..  Wigeon 12.  Pochard 2m + 1f.   Willow Warbler 1m.  Cormorant 17.
Hare Park:  Fieldfare 18.   
Wintersett Res: Sand Martin 300 + 200 ACP.  Greylay Goose 6 over.
Lepidoptera: 3 Orange Tips and 1Speckled Wood was seen west bank WRes.. (RH, LC).

Wilthorpe Marsh / Low Moor, Midhope. 7/4/19.

Wilthorpe - Water Pipit 2, Meadow Pipit 2. Small Sand Martin colony expanding with 12 birds at the moment. 3 singing Blackcap, 1 singing Willow Warbler, 2 Swallow. Low Moor/Midhope, - Poor light here with the mist not clearing the hills. Still, highlights with 28 Crossbills with some showing well. Snipe showing well with 6 drumming. Oystercatcher 2+, Meadow Pipit 10, Siskin 2, singing Skylark, C Buzzard 1, Kestrel 1.

A warm 7 - 13 degrees with 8/8 cloud and a light, cool, north easterly.
Brambling:  95  in the area today -  67 WRes and Haw Park Wood +  7 ACP + 21 north over ACP. 
Anglers CP: Goosander 1 over south.  The redhead Smew still present.  Willow Tit 1 (Pol).  Wigeon 16.  Pochard 1 female.  Shoveler 1 male. 
Botany Bay: Little Grebe 1 male.
Wintersett Res: Sand Martin 650.  House Martin 2.  Swallow 2.  Common Gull 1.
Haw Park Wood: Siskin 6.  Willow Warbler 2 male.  Great Spotted Woodpeckers 2 at picnic bench,  + 2   Canal, Stone Heaps + 2 Grotto Wood, Golf Course.
Ringing : 36 new birds were ringed this morning including  29 Lesser Redpoll,  a Chiffchaff and a Yellowhammer.
Lepidoptera: An Orange Underwing was on the Pol.

A Goldfinch ANA6758 was ringed by Pete Smith as a juv male on 06/10/17 at Wintersett
Becky Bailey received word that it was found dead having hit glass on 15/08/18 in Cottingham, East Riding  -  69km ENE before its demise!

Golf Course Field: Fieldfare 42 + 2 ACP.   
Anglers CP: Smew 1 redhead.   Shoveler 1 drake.  Snipe 3.  Willow Warbler 1 on Pol + 1 HPWood.  Wigeon 12.  Teal 8.  Pochard 3.  Cormorant 12.  Common Redpoll 1 ringed + 1 HPWood  + 1  ruin WRes. 
Brambling: 35 around the area + 2 from Pol feeding screen.
ACP Vis.Mig: Curlew 1 north + 2 dropped into back fields.   A Ringed Plover  flew over 10.15hrs   A Raven flew over north east at 12.15hrs.. Up to 20 Common Buzzard were up in the area.

2 Redshanks were on the wader scrape first thing with 14 Greylags and 20 Canada Geese. Elsewhere Water Rail 2 calling, Buzzard, Willow Tit 2 (1 on fat balls south of ringing rides + 1 on the embankment near Bleachcroft Farm, 4 singing Blackcaps and 8 singing Chiffchaffs.

Butterflies on the wing today Speckled Wood 4, Orange-tip 15m, S. Tortoiseshell 19, Peacock 10, Comma 6 and a Bee Fly (Chris Parkin)

 Haw Park Wood: A flock of 300 finches was flushed from the woodyard area by a Sparrowhawk .Wintersett Res: A Willow Warbler was in the SE corner.  Sand Martin 400. Shoveler 1 drake. 4 male Cetti's Warblers - east bank,  west bank,  Botany Road and Ruin.

On the wader scrape 20 Herring Gulls, a pair of Grey Wagtails and new in today 2 Little Ringed Plover (K. Bannister). Also present 6 Redpolls, Buzzard and Kestrel.

A Red Kite, was seen over Sherwood Way at 16.40hrs (Barbara Roberts) and soon after with a Buzzard over Les Corrall's garden on White Cross Road heading SW towards Stairfoot at 16.55hrs. Just across the road, Andrew Corrall had a Swallow over his garden.
