71 species for January is one more than than the 1998 record, following on from record breaking totals in November and December 2020. Red-legged Partridge on Friday got us over the line. Well done everybody.

Today the water areas were almost frozen over after another frost. Present were, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, 18 Redwings, 5 Fieldfares, 2 Siskins, Coal Tit, Cetti's Warbler (singing north of ringing rides), Little Egret, 15 Herring Gulls and Water Rail under the feeder (JP/R. Laverack/K. Bannister/CG).

2 Foxes were seen today, one fast asleep in one of the drier parts of the marsh.

Also fast asleep far away from the 'madding crowds' were, 25 Herald Moths and a Peacock butterfly.

Today was much better than forecasters predicted. There are signs that we are very gradually heading towards springtime. The days are lengthening, Snowdrops are flowering and Canada and Greylag Geese are back in small groups to stake out breeding territories. Blue Tits were seen inspecting nest boxes and the green shoots of Bluebells are pushing  through.

Today's highlights were, 4 Red-legged Partridges (1 singing), Linnet west, Stock Dove singing, 6 Bullfinches, 6 Redpolls, 10 Skylarks, 22 Redwings, 11 Fieldfares, Kingfisher, Cetti's Warbler (singing), 12 Canada Geese, 10 Greylag Geese, Little Egret and 6 Tufted Ducks. After a moderate frost the ground was pleasantly hard to walk on. The scrapes were mostly iced over and largely devoid of wildfowl. However, a small number of Coot kept a small area free of ice on the wader scrape for 30 Herring Gulls and a similar amount of BH Gulls.

Very few passerines were on show, the only ones of note were Willow Tit, Cetti's Warbler and a single Skylark flying over. Buzzard can always be relied upon (JP/CG/Dave Standish/ K. Bannister).

2 Foxes were hunting together this morning.

Dave Smith's male Blackcap was on the fat balls again, so that means its been coming to his Carlton garden everyday for the past month.

This is a bird that was ringed at Harewood Whin landfill site, to the west of York, (53.960 -1.177). The bird was caught using a Cannon Net and is one of around 2,500 Gulls which were caught and colour ringed over a 3-year period from March 2015.
Harewood Whin was one of the decreasing numbers of Landfill sites in the UK where it was possible to operate for the catching and ringing of gulls. The landfill site has now closed and no longer attracts large number of Gulls.
One of the main reasons for carrying out this work was to examine if and how the movements of Gulls altered with the closure of the Landfill site, which used to be a major food source throughout the year.
To date there have been over 3,000 sightings reported from as far apart as the Barents Sea and Morocco.
