A Ring necked Parakeet on 22nd  & 1-2 Water Pipit occasionally on Wombwell Ings. At least 5 Chiffchaff wintering along the Dearne/Dove rivers at Wombwell Ings including 3 ‘Siberian’ Chiffchaff. Carlton Marsh

This mornings sightings included Coal Tit, Goldcrest, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, 30 Goldfinches, 1 Linnet north, 3 Jays, 4 Buzzards 'thermalling' included last years juv. calling, 1 Dabchick and 15 Herring Gulls. The adult Mute Swan with 2 cygnets on the scrape are all yellow darvic ringed, the numbers yet to be read. (JP/CG/R. Laverack)

Everyone has said how quiet this winter has been bird-wise, and yet, the number of species seen here in January has smashed the all time record with 73 species. The previous January record was 70 in 1998 and 2020. Shoveler and Goosander took us over the line last week and a Linnet today just adds to the total.

A great effort by all our observers, who spends most days on their own patch. The highlights of this month were Collared Dove (its scarce here), Curlew and Chiffchaff.

This morning the 'Redhead' Goosander was back along with a drake Wigeon (first this year), but they had both left by late morning. Also present Buzzard, Kestrel, 32 Teal, Cormorant, c20 Siskins, and 2 Redpolls (JP).

A Green Woodpecker called at mid-day (Paul Baine) and a Fox was hunting the wader scrape.

On Thursday I noticed this Robin, it was feeding okay, but it looked decidedly odd and a bit tatty. Both eyes look the same. Could it be some kind of Mycroplasma bacteria that affects poultry and game birds. Karen Pickard also saw this bird and took the photograph below today.

Carlton Marsh

On the wader scrape 6 Greylags, c20 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck and a 'Redhead' Goosander (this afternoon Dave Standish).

Also present 2 Great Spot Woodpeckers together in the car park area. The male was wearing a ring. It is probably the juvenile male I ringed there on 6/12/17 and re-trapped on 20/3/20, 4 years and 28 days ago! It was one of the highlights from my first ringing session with Vivien Hartwell. A transmitter was fitted to a Willow Tit that day. 4 years on, it has become a scarce bird here.

2 Redpolls today were the first for 6 weeks. There was at least one Siskin, Cormorant, Sparrowhawk and 2 Buzzards.

Meanwhile, Andrew Corrall had a Red Admiral flying in the late morning sunshine in his Dad's Cudworth garden. Yet more proof that at least one is overwintering.

Wilthorpe Marsh west end 3/1/22.

Water Pipit flushed off mud flew to sf. 2 Water Pipits on the 1st, per J Lunn. Pair of Ravens, Siskin 1 over, Goldfinch c 40.

Looking back, 2021 was a good year for this site. It became a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest, thereby protecting it more from greedy developers. The Reserve also received a 'Cetificate of Excellence' in the Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, and to top it off, our wildlife group won a prestigious award in the 'Love Where Live' category at the Proud of Barnsley Awards.
