Carlton Marsh

First of all congratulations to the Wintersett Ringing Group on the ringing of a Barred Warbler on 27/8! With the hours and years you put in, it is well deserved.

These are the highlights of recent days; on Wednesday (24th) another Willow Emerald was seen in front of the hide on the leaf of Typha latifolia (D Smith/CG). Then on Friday another 2 were seen near the hide on nettles beside the dike ( L & A Corrall).

Meanwhile a Clouded Yellow butterfly flew past the observer, the first since September 2013 (JP). Also on that date a Goldcrest and 4 Swifts.

A Humming Bird Hawk Moth was feeding in Les Corrall's Low Cudworth garden on 26/8.

Wintersett does it again! 47 years + 1 day later!! 27.08.2022

Wintersett Res:

A Bittern flew over the west bank marsh to Cold Hiendley Res. at 06.05hrs.

A Yellow Wagtail flew south.  These birds were  closely followed by scenes,

as the team were alerted, by the the ringers,  that  a first year Barred Warbler

had been caught at 07.40hrs.

Amazingly, only the second record here,  after the first was trapped on 26th August 1975!

Here are four classic shots of Pete Smith's hand - 47 years and one day since it

last held a Barred Warbler at Wintersett.

Lots of hard work by Pete & Becky ringing every year which occasionally pays

off for all of us!

Also 2 singing Cetti's Warblers with 1 on the canal near tinkers pond which also revealed a Lesser Whitethroat. Family party of Sparrowhawks are in the conifer plantation here and calling all the time. Pair of Kingfishers have been regular this month from the river bridges with shoals of Chub and Minnows in the shallows.
