This is part of Barnsley Ringing Group taken on the Isle of May in October 1985. You may remember some (younger) faces? Bottom left to right - Martin Wells, Dave Southall, Steve Davies and Keith Robertson. Upper left me and right Roy Birch. Actually Roy and Keith were not ringers but good naturalists. We were expecting a great migration but caught very few due to a hot, high pressure week. There were House Mice in the building and on one day we worked through each room and ended up killing 42 which livened the week up. Best bird species caught were Shag (several), Common Sandpiper, Sparrowhawk,  Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Brambling.

WINTERSETT WE'RE ON A ROLL ! 21.01.20

4 - 6 degrees with  0/8 cloud, but increasing this afternoon, with a light westerly wind.
Anglers CP:  The drake Ring-necked Duck was back.   A Black-necked Grebe was new for the year list.  Pochard 132 + 8 WRes..  A Bearded Tit was first heard in reed beds on the north bank of Wintersett Res early afternoon, by Dave Bacon, working it's way towards the boathouse. Presumably, the same bird, was then heard calling in the south west corner of Anglers CP. in the reedbed,  A while later it was heard calling in front of the hide and was seen to be a male,  by Ian Allard and Pete Griffin, as it flew past and dropped into the reedbed behind the Sand Martin Box at 15.00hrs. Locals Pete Smith and Steve Denny arrived in the hide two minutes later, to the unbelieveable news. All observers scanned the reeds and,  happily, at 15.15hrs,  a reed stem moved and the rear end of the bird appeared in view. Immense relief for the two locals,  and the bird showed well for the next five minutes.  This is  a very rare bird for the area,  with only 3 chance sightings in 2006, a high flying bird in 1998, then a flock of 10 in 1986 -  per @StevieD 131. Video link   https://twitter.com/StevieD131/status/1219641579339730944       A Raven was flying and calling over the west bank.   2 Barns Owls were flying over VisMig Hill at dusk.

BBSG Recording Area Breeding Priority Species 2019

Not sure if this is worth doing each year but at least it gives a heads-up on what is happening with some of our more scarce species. These results are taken from this Blog and from Twitter throughout the breeding season and then put onto a master spreadsheet. As always, a few records will not have been passed over for various reasons but at least we have some meaningful records.

Pochard - up to 18 males and a smaller number of females but this year only 3 successful broods.
Grey Partridge - always difficult to record in the breeding season but at least 10 coveys in autumn.
Ringed Plover - 3 pair.
Little Ringed Plover - at least 8 pair.
Redshank - at least 4 pair.
Cuckoo - 7 males recorded (4 lowland and 3 upland habitats).
Merlin - 3 to 4 territories.
Cetti's Warbler - at least 10 territories.
Grasshopper Warbler - 5 territories.
Willow Tit - 45 territories.
Ring Ouzel - 5 to 6 territories.
Yellow Wagtail - 8 territories.
Lesser Redpoll - 8 to 10 territories.

Pochard down from last year, Cuckoo becoming worrying, Cetti's nearly doubling each year, a drop in Grasshopper Warbler, Willow Tit a 50% drop in 5 years, Yellow Wagtail up slightly and Lesser Redpoll about the same (but overlooked?).

To my knowledge there were no Lesser Spotted Woodpecker records, Whinchat, Wood Warbler or Corn Bunting. No records for Tree Pipit but must have been seen at Wharncliffe, the usual site. In due course Martin Wells will have a few more records passed over and hopefully add into these.

Thanks for all of your input

@DLangstonBirder commented.  A Viking would be a hybrid Glaucous x Herring. Have had a few comments on the bird, about what it could be, but probably just a pale argentatus.
