Low Moor/Midhope 31/3/24.

G and J Wasse, S Green. Cold wind but good light. Top birds here were Crossbills with an adult pair with a juv showing well. Linnet flock c50 still on Midhope lane, Siskin c15, Redpoll 1. Woodpigeon flock c75, Raven 2, Oystercatcher 2, Snipe 1.Red Kite 2 probably 3, C Buzzard c10, Kestrel 3, Sparrowhawk regular c4.

 Anglers CP: 

Barnacle Goose 1.  Shoveler 1 male and  2 males + 1 female WRes.

Oystercatcher 4.  Snipe 4.  Scaup 1 1stW male.  

Teal 1 male + 1 female. Willow Warbler 1 male on the Pol,  ACP.   

2 Curlew flew north.   A Golden Plover flew east.  Redwing 12.  

Blackcap 2 males + 6 males WRes.. 

2 adult Little Gulls on at 14.45hrs.  Chiffchaff 16 males + 21 WRes.  

A Willow Warbler was singing on the Pol. 

7 Little Gulls on at 16.00hrs,  (Andy Dalton)  left north east at 16.25hrs. (Pete Smith).

Wintersett Res. + Vis.Mig:

Sand Martin 11. Cetti's Warbler 4 males.  Blackcap 4 males.

A Short-eared Owl flew over high west  at 10.20hrs. 

3 Brambling were at the boathouse bench.  Canada Goose 3.

5 adult Little Gulls were flying low over the south west corner  at 12.05hrs. (Pete Smith)

A Kittiwake  and an adult Mediterranean Gull were on this morning.

Moorland news 30th and 29th March 2024.

30/3/24 Ewden valley, J Wasse, S Green. Very steady. 1 male Ring Ouzel, Stonechat 2 pair, Crossbill 1 n, Meadow Pipit c35, Grey Wagtail 1 w. Golden Plover flock c 40 sw, Raven 4, Red Kite 1+, Peregrine 2, C Buzzard c10, Sparrowhawk 1, Kestrel c 6. 29/3/24 Low Moor/Midhope, G and J Wasse, S Green. Good light but cold. Goshawk 1 imm seen a few times, Merlin 1 through ne, C Buzzard 6+, Kestrel 3. Raven 3, Golden Plover 2, LBB Gull 3, G Heron 1, Snipe 2. Oystercatcher 4, Crossbill 2 males into res conifers, Siskin c 10, Nuthatch 1.

The highlights this morning were 2 Pink Feet in a nearby wheat field, 2 Cetti's Warbler sang, a Great Spotted Woodpecker was 'drumming' in the car park, a pair of Kestrels were displaying near Bleachcroft Farm, Grey Wagtail and 2 Treecreepers near the wader scrape viewpoint (CG/DM Smith/Simon Cox).

This afternoon a Willow Warbler sang, our first this year. 

Also of note a Stoat near the double seats. Insects included 5 Dark-edged Bee Fly, 1 male Orange-tip, 1male Brimstone, 13 Peacock and 13 Comma (Chris Parkin).

A Dark Edged Bee Fly yesterday was our first this year.(L & A Corrall).

Not much change today, the 2 Pink Feet were in a nearby pasture. On the reserve 2 Cetti's continued to sing along with 2 Water Rails, and a female Blackcap was present (L & A Corrall/D Standish)

A Barnacle Goose was in the CP shallows.

Black-necked Grebe 1 in summer plumage.

Scaup 1 1st winter male.   Wigeon 20 + 2 WRes.. 

Sand Martin 2.   Shoveler 3 males + 1 female.  Teal 8.

An adult Kittiwake circling over,  flew south at 09.57hrs, 

to Wintersett Res.,  still on at 10.15hrs. 

Wintersett Res:   

A Mediterranean Gull  adult in summer plumage was on this morning.

2 Greylag Geese flew over.  

Lepidoptera: 

A Peacock and a Red Admiral  were seen near Willow Wood.

New in overnight 4 Wheatears on arable land also there 2 Red-legged and 1 Grey Partridge (JP).

An adult female Marsh Harrier quartered over the reed beds at 09.03hrs before leaving south (Dave Smith). It had been seen at Wintersett earlier.

 2 Cetti's sang and a Tawny Owl called. The 2 Pink Feet were feeding in a nearby horse pasture

A Marsh Harrier flew over south west at 07.45hrs

A Redshank flew over.   Swallow 1.

A male Blackcap  was on the west bank. Teal 17.

Both Pink Feet geese frequented a nearby horse pasture before alighting on the scrape for a wash and brush up. One is markedly larger than the other (K. Bannister).

A male Wheatear was found on a freshly harrowed field on the east bank, and a pair of Blackcaps were located near the ringing steps (the male sang). (Les & Andrew Corrall)

Also of note 2 Cetti's Warblers, Grey Wagtail and singing Tawny Owl, Goldcrest and Water Rail (CG).

29 Whooper Swans flew from Edderthorpe at 08.38hrs, 

reached Wintersett  08.48hrs!!.  then continued north west.

80 Meadow Pipits in north bank field.

Shoveler 3 males.  A Yellowhammer was on the east bank road.

2 male Blackcaps -  1 south west corner + 1 south east corner. 

Anglers CP: 

Common Scoter 1 female off east bank. 

2 Black-necked Grebes in summer plumage.

Teal 1 male + 1 female.   Wigeon 34 + 2 WRes..

A Dunlin was in the shallows.  Scaup 1 1st Winter male.

Willow Warbler 1 male.

Moorhouse Lane Pond:

Cetti's  Warbler 1 male on big pond + 1 male south east corner Wintersett Res. 

Pochard 2 males + 1 female. 

Low Moor/Midhope 26/3/24.

Cold 11 degree's here when the sun went in. Red Kite 3 but probably 4 all drifting e. 1 has missing left wing primaries. C Buzzard 6, Sparrowhawk 3, Kestrel 2. Raven 3, LBB Gull 3, Curlew c 20, Lapwing c 20, Snipe 1. Grey Heron 2, Oystercatcher 4, Meadow Pipit c 15.

 The 2 Pink Feet were still around (JP), 2 Water Rails were singing (CG), Kingfisher and 3 LBB Gulls.

Low Moor/Midhope 24/3/24.

Very good light in the sun with plenty cloud moving through. Top bird an imm. Marsh Harrier through flushing all the waders. C Buzzard 4, Sparrowhawk 1, Kestrel 3, Barn Owl at 3-55 pm. Raven scarce, just 1, Curlew c35 in the area, Oystercatcher 8 but probably 10, Snipe 1, Grey Heron 1. Fieldfare flock c 50 through e, 1 singing Chiffchaff, Siskin c 5, Meadow Pipit c 6, Nuthatch 1. Displaying Goshawk on the 18th but no sign since.

 but found another Norwegian BH Gull

 rung as a nestling on June 15th 2023 at Selnesskjaeret, Rogaland NORWAY.

An adult Mediterranean Gull, in summer plumage, was on the shallows. 

The male 1st winter  Scaup still present.

A Red Kite was over the CP fields. 

A 1st winter Little Gull on the Country Park this afternoon, 
 
and both Norwegian Blackheaded Gulls still on the Rockwall.

New in today 2 Pink Feet Geese on the scrape (L & A Corrall) They took up with several Greylags and flew onto Wigley's horse pasture at 16.15hrs.(CG).

Also present Kingfisher, Cormorant, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 2 Mistle Thrush. 

1 Orange Underwing moth flew in the sun (LC/AC).

Windy and very cold but good light with a full blanket of cloud. Red Kite 1, Peregrine 1, C Buzzard 6. Curlew c 40 down but mobile, Oystercatcher 2, Snipe 1 chipping, Meadow Pipit increasing c 25.

An Oystercatcher was on the wader scrape yesterday (Martin Weir).

Butterflies enjoying the spring sunshine today included 17 Comma, 7 Peacock, 5 Small Tortoiseshell and 6 male Brimstone (C. Parkin).

Steady 3 hours in good light. Red Kite 1, C Buzzard 6, Kestrel 3, Barn Owl showing well from 4-09pm. Large accipiter through east was probably a male Goshawk. Raven 3, Curlew c 60 with the large part of about 50 moving off e. Lapwing c 25, Snipe 2, Oystercatcher 2, 15+ Meadow Pipits, Siskin 5, Crossbill 1 heard only.

Dabchick, Redshank, 3 Chiffchaffs sang, 

Ferrymoor Flash
3 LBB Gulls north, 1 Common Gull, 2 Herring Gulls, 3 Pochard (2f), a Snipe flew south and 2 Oystercatchers came in.

 A Redshank and 2 Lapwings were new in to the wader scrape this morning (JP/K. Bannister).

40 Whooper Swans flew NW over Beech Avenue, Cudworth at 07.40hrs before entering Carlton Marsh airspace moments later (G/ Miller). Another Herd flew over at 08.30hrs (per KB).

Present were 6 singing Chiffchaff, 1 Fieldfare, 1 Water Rail and 4 Buzzards up together.

8 Red-legged and 2 Grey Partridge, Grey Wagtail, 2 singing Chiffchaff and 2 Buzzards.

2 Comma and 1 Peacock butterfly and the first flowering Bluebell and Wood Anemone (C. Parkin).

 Our first spring migrant, Chiffchaff, sang this morning near the wader scrape viewpoint. 

Also present 2 Buzzards, Kestrel, Goldcrest, Treecreeper and 2 Cetti's Warblers.

The first Primrose and Cowslip added colour to the scene (K. Bannister/L. & A. Corrall/C. Parkin).

The mild conditions this afternoon, after the rain this morning, created the perfect opportunity for our first Orange Underwings of the year to fly. One near the double seats, the other south of the wader scrape on the embankment.

The Canada Goose flock numbered 35, which included the greylag cross and there were at least 6 Greylags. 

Also present 20 Teal, 2 Cetti's  Warblers, Great Spot Woodpecker and a male Kestrel mobbed a Buzzard.

Herds of Whooper Swans were on the move this morning here and the Dearne Valley. Edderthorpe Flash had record numbers through (per J. C. Clarkson).

c50 headed north at 07.10hrs (K. Bannister), another 80 followed at 08.45hrs (KB/G. Miller) and another 80 the same way at 09.15hrs (G. Miller). These beat the previous record of 54 on 6/3/2011 & 4/4/2014!

Low Moor/Midhope 8/3/24.

Cold and windy this aft with poor light. Presumed Hen harrier briefly over barnside ridge. Red Kite 1, C Buzzard 5, Kestrel 2. Raven 3, Curlew c6 with no sign of the large flock, Lapwing 20+, Oystercatcher 2 very mobile. No sign of any Snipe, presumably too cold. Siskin 1, Nuthatch 1.

Carlton Marsh

A Redshank south at 09.50hrs was the first for this year (JP). 

Present were Treecreeper, a singing Goldcrest and a Water Rail (L & A Corrall).

Anglers CP:

Shelduck 2.  A male Cetti's Warbler was very vocal on the east bank hedge.

A male Chiffchaff was on the east bank + 1 male on the Pol.

Linnet 2.   Redwing 15.   Goldcrest 4.   Black-tailed Godwit 1.

Scaup 1 1st Winter male.   Goosander 1 male.  Pochard 2.

Shoveler 1 male.  Teal 12.

 80 Pink Feet Geese SE at 17.20hrs (Chris Parkin).

Carlton Marsh
Cetti's Warbler, 3 Buzzards, 2 Great Spot Woodpeckers, 8 Tufted Ducks and 14 Common Gulls (JP).

Cudworth Common
Green Woodpecker, 2 Linnets, 2 Siskins, Lapwing displaying and a Redshank flew over. 
10 Common Snipe and 1 Jack Snipe erupted from the Ash Plain 

Ferrymoor Flash
Drake Goosander, 5 Teal, 9 Pochard (6m), 6 Greylags and 2 Oystercatchers (CG).

Anglers CP:

Black-tailed Godwit 1.

Whooper Swan: 43 left north west, 1 returned.

Carlton Marsh & Ardsley Viaduct

This mornings highlights were 7 Siskins, a Treecreeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Moorhen sitting on 5 eggs, 3 Buzzards and 2 Mistle Thrushes (CG).

2 Peregrines were on the chimneys at Ardagh Glassworks (K. Bannister).

Ardsley Viaduct
A 'Redhead' Goosander was on the Dearne below. 26 Fieldfares, a Coal Tit, 2 Greenfinches, 3 Buzzards a Woodcock and a Common Shrew made for an interesting visit. But perhaps best of all was a Peacock butterfly and a fresh Oak Beauty moth resting on a nearby fence post (C. Parkin).

 Anglers CP:

The 1st winter Scaup still present.

Shoveler 6   Siskin 10   Chiffchaff  1 male + 1.

A Redshank and a Black-tailed Godwit were in the shallows.

Green Woodpecker 1.  

A Chiffchaff was singing by the path to Walton - Simon Cooper.

Wintersett Res:

A Water Rail was in the boathouse reeds.

Carlton Marsh

 A Curlew flew west at 09.40hrs (JP). 9 Greylags flew north a Goldcrest sang in the car park and a Mistle Thrush sang.

Low Moor/Midhope 3/3/24.

Very good light with areas of snow still on Pike Lowe. Steady couple of hours this aft with waders the highlight and raptors thin. Curlew c 70 down late aft, Lapwing c 60 in the area, Snipe 2, Oystercatcher 6, Grey Heron 1. C Buzzard 4, Kestrel 1, Siskin 2.

Anglers CP:

A male and a female Yellowhammer were in the Pol field.

Green Woodpecker 1.   Scaup 1 - 1st Winter male.

Siskin 10.  Goosander 2 males. 

Wintersett Res:

A male Cetti's Warbler was in the boathouse reeds.

Grey Wagtail 3.   Pochard 16.   

A Treecreeper was in Pits Wood.   A Redshank flew north.

12 Golden Plover flew over Cold Hiendley fields.

Wintersett - Whooper Swans 02.03.2024

 Wintersett Res:

A singing male Chiffchaff was at the boathouse.

14 Whooper Swans were on this morning,

Anglers CP:

The 1st Winter male Scaup still present. 

Green Woodpecker  1.  Black-tailed Godwit 1.  Snipe 6.

15 Whooper Swans were on this morning,  

and then joined by the 14 from Wintersett Res.. this afternoon. 

Ashleigh had 65 + 8 Whooper Swans flying north over Wintersett Res. at 17.10hrs

Wintersett Gull Roost 1st March 2024

Wintersett Res. Gull Roost  - Steve Denny

2 x 1st Winter Mediterranean Gulls  and 231 Herring Gulls  

were in the roost tonight.

Fleets Dam 1/3/24.

Parakeet 2, Goosander 3 all males, GC Grebe 8, Cetti's 1 singing sw corner.
