AJN8120 was ringed  at Wintersett

by  @PeteSmith1254 on 5/11/20 (ad F). 

It was retrapped yesterday(!) 30/3/22 in Peebles. 

A move of 251km NNW in 510 days.

Lesser Redpoll ANN2277 was caught at Wintersett

on Sunday 27/03/22 (ad M). 

It was originally ringed at Timble Ings, NYorks on 12/10/20 (1styr).

Thats exactly 500 days between the records, and a move of 45km SSE.

20 Redwing were on the Pol  + 10 flew north east over Wintersett Res..

Wintersett 30.03.2022

 Wintersett Res:

14 Sand Martins were flying high  and low over, and later left north over Anglers CP.

Anglers CP:

Dunlin 1.    Redwing 30 + 4 Disposal Point.

Disposal Point:

Green Woodpecker 1.

Wilthorpe Marsh 30/3/22.

Water Pipit flushed off mud flew to sf. Grey Partridge 1, Raven 2, Cetti's 1 showed well briefly. Parakeets spreading west up the valley with 3 at the w end and 1 central. L Egret 1, Green Pecker 1.

Carlton Marsh

 New in today a very early Tree Pipit in a tree near Cudworth Parkway underpass east of the reserve. (Richard Laverack)

Also present Cormorant, 50 Carrion Crows on tilled land, 3 Buzzards, Kestrel. 2 Redshanks were on the wader scrape with 31 Herring Gulls.

A drake Common Scoter was seen by Steve Denny when the fog lifted.

Cetti's Warbler  1 male on the Pol.

Carlton Marsh

This afternoon 2 Buzzards were in the air and 2 Collared Doves were in the car park (they are not common here). c40 Carrion Crows were feeding on tilled land nearby. (C. Parkin/K. Bannister)

Butterflies included 12 Peacock, 15 Small Tortoiseshell, 2 Speckled Wood, 2 male Orange-tip, 2 Small White, 1 G.V. White and a Dark-edged Bee Fly (C. Parkin).

This evening 2 House Martins were feeding over the scrape before leaving north at 19.00hrs. Earlier a Green Woodpecker called, 11 Pied Wagtails came in, 2 Redshanks were on the wader scrape all day and 2 Snipe left the marsh at dusk. (Dave Standish)

Wintersett + Ringing 27.03.2022

Wintersett Res:

A pair of Nuthatch  + 1 at Boathouse.   

3 male Cetti's Warblers  1 boathouse, 1 ruin and 1 clump.

A male Blackcap was singing in the WillowWood..   

2 Water Rails were calling in boathouse phragmites and west bank. 

A pair of Treecreepers were in the south west corner.

Anglers CP:

A Pink-footed Goose flew north west at 08.38hrs.   

Greylag Goose 2.   Snipe 4. Lesser Redpoll 1.

9 birds were ringed this morning: 

2  Goldfinch, 1 Bullfinch, 3 Blue Tit, 3 Great Tit, plus the only Lesser Redpoll caught was a control!

14 Chiffchaffs are singing now, 2 Buzzards were in the air and our first Orange-tip butterfly was on the wing.

20 Fieldfare were in the Golf Cours Field.

A male Blackcap was singing  at the boathouse.

A male Orange-tip and a Small White were on the north bank WRes

Carlton Marsh

Today's sightings included 2 Dabchick, Water Rail, 1m Siskin, Green Woodpecker, c30 Redwing came in to roost, a Snipe left at dusk, Kingfisher and 62 Herring Gulls on the wader scrape. (JP/D. Standish).

Earlier this afternoon 4 Buzzards were in the air, but before that they were seen mating.

Grey Wagtail, Buzzard, Kingfisher, a Mute Swan had a nest.

Butterflies on show 1 Speckled Wood, 1 G.V. White, 33 Peacock,  14 Comma, 3 Small White, and 4m Brimstone. There was also 5 Dark-edged Bee Fly. (Chris parkin).

 5 male Cetti's Warblers were in the area today - 1 Pol,   1 Golf course field,  1 north east WRes.,  1 south east  WRes.  and 1 Ruin area CHRes.

Anglers CP:

A Little Ringed Plover was in the shallows, then flew south east.

A male Brambling was at the Pol Feeders.  Shoveler 26.  

Wintersett Res:

A Blackcap and a Grey Wagtail were at the boathouse.   Pochard 1 female.  

Cold Hiendley Res:

Greylag Goose 2.


The first Dark edged Bee-fly of the year was spotted by Pete Smith on the east bank WRes..

Wilthorpe Marsh 25/3/22.

Raven 2, Little Owl 2, Goosander 2 redheads on the river with a male earlier in the week. Cetti's 1, L Egret 1. Non bird surprises yesterday were 2 Roe Deer together and a Chinook helicopter low sw at 3-17pm.

Wintersett Res:

Pink-footed Goose 45 flew north west.  Kingfisher 1.  A male Blackcap was at the boathouse.

3 male Cetti's Warblers - 1 male north bank,  1 male west bank clump, 1 male boathouse reeds, also 1 male in south west corner Anglers CP.  

Pochard 2 males + 1 female.  

Cold Hiendley Res:

Goosander 2 redheads.

Anglers CP:

Redwing 1.   Brambling 1 male + 1 female at Pol Feeders.

Carlton Marsh

 2 Redshank, 1 Lesser Black -backed north, 12 Chiffchaffs were singing along with Cetti's Warbler.

 6 Small Tortoiseshells were flying this afternoon ad 2 Orange Underwing moths.

At dusk a Snipe flew off the marsh (D, Standish).

Storrs Mill Wood to Ardsley Viaduct (on the River Dearne)
5 Buzzards, a pair of Grey wagtails, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Grey Partridges, 5 Lapwings, Treecreeper, and potentially 2 pairs of breeding Kingfishers. A mink was seen on this stretch.
The first Bluebells are coming into flower.

Butterflies included the first male Orange -tip of the year, 9 Peacock, 41 Small Tortoiseshell, 20 Comma, 12m Brimstone and 1 Small White. (Chris Parkin)

A Woodcock was flushed near the wind turbine (Arthur Vincent).

 Anglers CP:

Shoveler 27.   Redwing 2.   A female Brambling was at the Pol Feeders.  

Cetti's Warbler 1 male in south west corner.

Pochard 1 male and 1 female.    A male Blackcap was on the west bank.

Carlton Marsh

The 2 Redshank seem to be content with feeding on the wader scrape. Also of note Little Egret, Treecreeper, Cetti's warbler, 10 singing Chiffchaffs, 2 Grey Wagtail and 2 Buzzard. On the top fields 16 Skylark and 30 Linnet. (JP/Les & Andrew Corrall/Keith Bannister).

Butterflies on show were 8 Peacock, 14 Small Tortoiseshell, 21 Comma, 3m Brimstone, 1 Small White and 2 Orange Underwing moths. (Chris Parkin).

Mute Swan Y278 W48478 ringed as juvenile at Bingley, West Yorks on 30/8/19 (Sorby Breck Ringing Group) was at Carlton Marsh on 13/3/22. 926 days after it was ringed, 42km from the ringing site, direction SE. (per K. Bannister)

 Pintail 1 female.  Teal 7.  Snipe 2.  A female Brambling was at the Pol feeders.

 A male Cetti's Warbler still present in the southwest reedbed + 1 male in ruin area CHRes. + 1 male north bank WRes..

Haw Park Wood:

A Nuthatch was at Blue Bridge and another was at Clayroyd.

Carlton Marsh

Today's sightings included 2 Redshank, Grey Wagtail, Grey Partridge, 2 Water Rail, Cetti's Warbler, a pair of Dabchick and 2 LBB Gulls south.

2 Orange Underwing Moths were seen around the tops of Silver Birch before the sun went in.

A small clump of Kingcup was re-introduced last autumn after it died out about 30 years ago

It was swimming on Anglers CP  in the afternoon.

The male and female Bramblings were  at the feeding station this morning.

2 Redshanks alighted on the wader scrape at 08.00hrs. Other birds of interest, Treecreeper, 4 Siskins (1 male sang), 2 Goldcrests (they usually leave in March to breed elsewhere), 7 Chiffchaffs sang along with Green Woodpecker, and a Great Spotted was 'drumming'

Monday 14 March 2022

Carlton Marsh

Todays sighting included Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, 9 Tufted Duck, 2 Dabchick, Green Woodpecker, 1 Siskin, 1 Linnet, Kestrel pair displaying and 2 Peregrines on the Ardagh factory buildings (L & A Corrall/CG).

Later at dusk 2 Snipe came of the marsh to feed elsewhere and male and female Tawny Owls called. (D Standish)

A male Brimstone butterfly was enjoying the spring sunshine (Jim Clark/L & A Corrall). 

Sadly a Willow Tit survey carried our by Jim Clark failed to find any at all!

5 in at 07.57hrs, 12 north  at 07.29hrs,  34 north at 07.47hrs,  

24 north at 07.57hrs and 2 on Cold Hiendley Res..

Redwing:  30 over  + 10 west.    Siskin: 4 on Pol feeders + 11 east.   

Goosander 2 over north west.   

Wintersett Res:

2 Grey Wagtails were on the spillway.

Wilthorpe Marsh + Kexborough

13/3/22. Wilthorpe Marsh west - Water Pipit showed well coming into moult on small patch of mud which also had Grey Partridge and a pair of Lapwing. Kexborough, Cawthorne Lane - 1 pair of Curlew down. Upperfield Lane - 3 Curlew down and 600+ Woodpigeon down.

Carlton Marsh

The Barnsley Naturalist Society visited this morning providing the following 4 Buzzards in the air together, 5 singing Chiffchaffs, 1 singing Cetti's warbler, 3 singing Reed Buntings, 1 Yaffling Green Woodpecker, 1 Linnet, 1 Greenfinch, a male Grey Wagtail and 6 Common Gulls.

The first flowers of Cowslip were showing in the western Meadow along with Dogs Mercury and White Dead Nettle on the embankment.

4 Smooth Newts and a Froglet from last year were found under an old sleeper and a Lemon Slug was under a rock. 

A fresh dead Wood Mouse was another interesting find. 

A Orange Underwing was flying around the top of a Silver Birch tree (C. Parkin).

It was really good to see old friends from this group again, I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

Chiffchaff  3 males  + 5 males WRes, +  4 males Walton Hall + 1 male Haw Park.

Siskin 2 + 4 flew east and  2 flew south over WRes..

Goosander 2 males + 3 redheads.  

Cetti's Warbler 1 male north bank + 1 male north east corner + 1 male east bank.

Walton Hall:

Redwing 15 + 13 in Willow Wood.

Fieldfare 19.

A Curlew flew over.  A male Siskin was at the feeding station.  

Shoveler 26.  Gadwall 16.  Snipe 4.  

12 Whooper Swans were in this morning and still present at 16.55hrs in rain

Low Moor/Midhope 6/3/22. R Twigg, A Deighton, G and J Wasse, S Green.

Hen Harrier 2, Red Kite 1, Peregrine 1,Sparrowhawk 2, C Buzzard 5+, Kestrel 3+. Raven 3, Oystercatcher 5, Golden Plover 2, Siskin 5, Stonechat 1 male. 150 Curlew down yesterday, cc Marsh Harrier today at Canyards.

Cudworth Common

10 Skylarks, 11 Yellow Buntings and 1 Linnet were feeding in maize stubble. 

A singing Dabchick and a 'Yaffling' Green Woodpecker were on the pylon pond and 5 Ringed Plovers were on the ash plateau.

There were at least 6 Tufted Ducks, 10 Teal and 9 Pochards (6m).

 A Redshank flew east on Saturday 26th (JP).

73 Species were recorded during February, which is well above average for this site, but still 4 short of the phenomenal February of 2021. Still a great effort everybody, thank you.

Today Little Egret. 9 Tufted Duck, 18 Canada geese, 6 Greylags, 20 Teal, Little Egret, Green Woodpecker, 1 Linnet north, 2 Siskin, 3 Redwing south and Coal Tit (L & A Corrall/CG).

Ardsley Viaduct area
Red-legged and Grey Partridge, 12 Lapwing, Greenfinch and a pair of Goosander on the Dearne.
2 Comma butterflies were on the wing in the sunshine.

Littleworth Park-Monk Bretton
Frogspawn was found (C. Parkin)

A Chiffchaff was near the boathouse bench.   Goosander 4.  

A Cetti's Warbler and a Water Rail were in the west bank marsh.
