Lesser Redpoll ANN2277 was caught at Wintersett
on Sunday 27/03/22 (ad M).
It was originally ringed at Timble Ings, NYorks on 12/10/20 (1styr).
Thats exactly 500 days between the records, and a move of 45km SSE.

A drake Common Scoter was seen by Steve Denny when the fog lifted.

Cetti's Warbler 1 male on the Pol.
This afternoon 2 Buzzards were in the air and 2 Collared Doves were in the car park (they are not common here). c40 Carrion Crows were feeding on tilled land nearby. (C. Parkin/K. Bannister)
Butterflies included 12 Peacock, 15 Small Tortoiseshell, 2 Speckled Wood, 2 male Orange-tip, 2 Small White, 1 G.V. White and a Dark-edged Bee Fly (C. Parkin).
This evening 2 House Martins were feeding over the scrape before leaving north at 19.00hrs. Earlier a Green Woodpecker called, 11 Pied Wagtails came in, 2 Redshanks were on the wader scrape all day and 2 Snipe left the marsh at dusk. (Dave Standish)

14 Chiffchaffs are singing now, 2 Buzzards were in the air and our first Orange-tip butterfly was on the wing.

A male Orange-tip and a Small White were on the north bank WRes.
Today's sightings included 2 Dabchick, Water Rail, 1m Siskin, Green Woodpecker, c30 Redwing came in to roost, a Snipe left at dusk, Kingfisher and 62 Herring Gulls on the wader scrape. (JP/D. Standish).
Earlier this afternoon 4 Buzzards were in the air, but before that they were seen mating.

At dusk a Snipe flew off the marsh (D, Standish).
Butterflies included the first male Orange -tip of the year, 9 Peacock, 41 Small Tortoiseshell, 20 Comma, 12m Brimstone and 1 Small White. (Chris Parkin)

Pochard 1 male and 1 female. A male Blackcap was on the west bank.
The 2 Redshank seem to be content with feeding on the wader scrape. Also of note Little Egret, Treecreeper, Cetti's warbler, 10 singing Chiffchaffs, 2 Grey Wagtail and 2 Buzzard. On the top fields 16 Skylark and 30 Linnet. (JP/Les & Andrew Corrall/Keith Bannister).
Butterflies on show were 8 Peacock, 14 Small Tortoiseshell, 21 Comma, 3m Brimstone, 1 Small White and 2 Orange Underwing moths. (Chris Parkin).
Mute Swan Y278 W48478 ringed as juvenile at Bingley, West Yorks on 30/8/19 (Sorby Breck Ringing Group) was at Carlton Marsh on 13/3/22. 926 days after it was ringed, 42km from the ringing site, direction SE. (per K. Bannister)

2 Redshanks alighted on the wader scrape at 08.00hrs. Other birds of interest, Treecreeper, 4 Siskins (1 male sang), 2 Goldcrests (they usually leave in March to breed elsewhere), 7 Chiffchaffs sang along with Green Woodpecker, and a Great Spotted was 'drumming'

Sadly a Willow Tit survey carried our by Jim Clark failed to find any at all!

2 Grey Wagtails were on the spillway.
The Barnsley Naturalist Society visited this morning providing the following 4 Buzzards in the air together, 5 singing Chiffchaffs, 1 singing Cetti's warbler, 3 singing Reed Buntings, 1 Yaffling Green Woodpecker, 1 Linnet, 1 Greenfinch, a male Grey Wagtail and 6 Common Gulls.
The first flowers of Cowslip were showing in the western Meadow along with Dogs Mercury and White Dead Nettle on the embankment.
4 Smooth Newts and a Froglet from last year were found under an old sleeper and a Lemon Slug was under a rock.
A fresh dead Wood Mouse was another interesting find.
A Orange Underwing was flying around the top of a Silver Birch tree (C. Parkin).
It was really good to see old friends from this group again, I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

73 Species were recorded during February, which is well above average for this site, but still 4 short of the phenomenal February of 2021. Still a great effort everybody, thank you.
