This morning 10 Blackcaps, 1 Willow Warbler and a juv. Great Spotted Woodpecker were ringed.
Remind me not to try and photograph one again. Handling them to put a ring on etc isn't a problem, but with my camera in one hand and the bird in the other I had no protection as it switched to hammer drill mode! I just managed to take a couple of photos before I had to let go because of the excruciating pain as it tried to drill into my fingers and in particular the joints. A lovely bird though and the first ringed here since 2001.

Also of interest 3m Banded Demoiselle, 1f Emperor, ovipositing, 6m Ruddy Darter and several Emerald Damselfly.

The highlight today though was the discovery of our first ever Hornet Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria). I believe this is also new for the Barnsley recording area. I am sure Mr. Coldwell will correct me if I am wrong! It may even be a migrant. I apologise for the poor quality of the phone camera, but at least its a record shot. (CG)
