Pyropterus nigroruber.   It was  found  previously, in Haw Park by Dave Beardsell on 4th August 2012. It has a national status of Na (thought to occur in less than 30 10 km squares). It has two centres of population - south Yorkshire/Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire and north Yorkshire. Its great rarity is due to the fact that it is saproxylic (found in dead wood).

Old Moor Nocturnal Report

Arrived at Old Moor tonight at 19.30 and headed straight for the Field Pool West hide as I had just had a text saying 4 Little Egrets were present. From the hide the 4 Egrets could be seen, 3 adults and 1 juvenile, almost immediately the Egrets flew to roost in the willows on the Willow Pool. Therefore I followed the Egrets down to the Wath Ings Hide.

Roosting in the willows tonight were Grey Heron 1, Cormorant 13 & Little Egret 15. The Egrets came in as follows: 4 @ 19.30, 2 @ 19.45, 1 @ 19.54, 1 @ 20.18, 3 @ 21.19, 1 @ 21.27, 1 @ 21.38, 1 @ 21.54 and finally 1 @ 21.58. All the Egrets came in tonight from up the valley apart from the first 4 and the 1 @ 21.38 which came in from down the valley.

At about 8 o'clock 2 Curlews flew over the Main Marsh towards the Wader Scrape and a Barn Owl was hunting.

Wintersett 12.07.16

New species for Barnsley !!

Took this photo this afternoon of a juv Blackbird in the back garden.

Cannot recall seeing any Blackbird with such even grey tones like this before. Usually they are either near all white or with a proportion of white like the image below taken in Broomhill village on 11/03/15. Some people may recall this bird?

Old Moor Sofa

An update on the number of species recorded in the Old Moor Area this year, at the end of April the total was 146.

A further 10 species were added in May as follows - Whinchat on 4th (147), Wood Sandpiper on 5th (148), Black Tern on 6th (149), Turnstone on 6th (150), Spotted Flycatcher on 8th (151), Grey Plover on 9th (152), Red Footed Falcon on 12th (153), Sanderling on 15th (154), Laughing Gull on 25th (155) and Little Tern on 29th (156).

Only one species was added in June, Little Bittern on 4th (157).

Already in July a further species has been added, White Winged Black Tern on 7th (158).

Last year the total at the end of May was 144 therefore this year we are 12 species better off. However 6 species had been seen by then last year but not this year, Merlin, Mandarin, Bean Goose, Rock Pipit, Tree Pipit and Curlew Sandpiper.

Last year the total at the end of June was 149 therefore this year we are 8 species better off. However 10 species had been seen last year but not this year, the 6 species mentioned above plus Crane, Gull Billed Tern, Long Eared Owl and Red Necked Phalarope.

The good spring this year has continued in both May and June, not in quantity but definitely in quality. Another 2 new birds for the area have been added - Red Footed Falcon and Laughing Gull but arguably the star bird for the year sofa has been the male Little Bittern. Surely the returning Male from last year and is still present today, it has been seen very well and can frequently be heard "barking".

For comparison some other inland sites totals are as follows:- Swillington Ings, West Yorkshire 160, Upton Warren, Worcestershire 133, Hatfield Moors, South Yorkshire 162 and Potteric Carr, South Yorkshire 148.

Edderthorpe, first week of July

The first signs of autumn are becoming evident here with a few waders returning even though there are virtually no muddy edges for resting or feeding. Each time a bit of mud appears a new front passes through and the rains push the water levels back up!
Two broods of Shoveler are on Houghton (7 and 2+), along with a good number of Mallard and Gadwall broods. Only 2 Tufted broods up to now though.
Little Egrets have peaked at 6, all adults, including one with colour rings.
Up to 3 Avocets have been on Houghton most of the week ,One or two Green Sandpipers are daily on Houghton with a few Common Sandpipers usually on Edderthorpe. Up to 3 Redshank remain including a couple of juveniles, presumably reared nearby. Common Snipe are arriving back in the last 3 days, up to 7 on 9th. Just single Ringed Plovers have been seen and Little Ringed Plovers also appear to have had a bad breeding season. The first week in July is usually the peak time for LRP numbers;- 28 in 2013, 24 in 2015 at Edderthorpe, but this year birds have been seen on only 2 days during this first week with a max of two. On the plus side the two LRPs were juveniles so they have bred successfully somewhere (probably) locally. A single Dunlin was present on 7th and a Black-tailed Godwit on 5th. A newly hatched Lapwing chick was by the Flash on 8th and adult Lapwings have reached 77 as the moult build-up begins.
Not too many passerines around but a family party of Willow Tits by the western railway is noteworthy.
