Friday 22nd. A new brood of 5 Tufted Duck. The female took them to a Coot nest and was quietly brooding them, when along came the owner of the nest. Both Coot tried to oust her and her family, but the Tufted Duck lunged at both Coot, chasing them away, before taking her family to safety. And they all lived happily ever after.
At least 2 Kingfisher were about along with 2 more broods of Tufted Duck and 15 immature Canada Geese and 3 Grey Herons. Little Owl and Tawny Owl were out at dusk and a Green Sandpiper was keeping its distance from a young full grown Fox patrolling the bank on the Wader Scrape.
Brown Hawker and 2 Purple Hairstreaks were on the wing.
Earlier in the day a Leopard Moth was found on Storrs Mill Lane, Cudworth - alive.
Saturday 23rd at Carlton Marsh a Black-tailed Godwit was heard calling this morning, but out of sight - too many trees! (Jim Plant)
