Dearne Valley

 Storrs Mill to Ardsley Viaduct
18 Greylags, 4 Red -legged Partridge, 3 Cormorants, 4 Buzzards, 2 Lapwings,  Mallard with 5 young.

Butterflies included 86 Speckled Wood, 2m Brimstone, 2 Small Copper, 2 Holly Blue, 36 Orange-tip, 26 Large White, and some Small Tort. caterpillars.

Also 9 Large Red and 4 Common Blue Damselflies (Chris Parkin).

Carlton Marsh
New in today 2 House Martins. The Cuckoo showed well and sang for most of the morning (M. White/CG).

A Little Ringed Plover left the wader scrape north at 07.15hrs (K. Bannister).

A Canada Goose had a brood of 6 new very small young on the scrape and the Swans appeared to scraping a nest together.

Woolley
4 House Martins and 3 Buzzards were in the air.
 
Butterflies included 47 Peacock, 15 Dingy Skipper, 1m Brimstone, 1 Small Copper, 52 Orange-tip (mostly feeding on rape), 25 Large White, and 81 White species. 
 
A Large Red Damselfly was on the wing and there were hundreds of Tadpoles in the ponds (C. Parkin).

Carlton Marsh

New in today and singing 2 Lesser Whitethroats, Garden Warbler, and a Grasshopper Warbler. A Swift flew north and a Cuckoo sang along with 4 Whitethroats, 4 Reed Warblers and 3 Sedge Warblers (JP/R. Laverack/CG).

The resident pair of mute Swans gave a very long courtship display before mating, so fingers crossed they breed.

2 new broods of Canada geese (6 & 3) and a female Teal were on the wader scrape with a pair of Lapwings.

The Cuckoo showed well again today. 4 pairs of Teal are still on the wader scrape, the drakes displaying their vivid breeding plumage to the females.

4 pairs of Tufted Ducks were on the main scrape  and 2 Swallows flew north this evening.

3 Foxes were seen this evening, no doubt hunting Rabbits.

Elsewhere Grey Wagtail, Cuckoo, 3 singing Reed Warblers + 2 chasing around, and 12 Starlings west. (K. Bannister/L & A Corrall).

A Barn Owl was hunting over the fields this morning and a Common Sandpiper was on the wader scrape (Keith Bannister).

Butterflies included my first Holly Blue of the year, 10 Small Tort., 7 Comma, 2m Brimstone, 43 Orange-tip and  16 Large White. Also the Ichneuemon wasp stramentarius (Chris Parkin).

On the scrapes 3 Dabchick, 20+ Canada Geese, 8 Greylags, 2 Mute Swan, 2 pairs Tufted Duck, 2 Teal, Common Sandpiper (3rd day), 1 LRP, Lapwing displaying (R. Laverack/J. Finch).

Also 6 species species of Warbler that included Whitethroat, Reed Warbler, 8 Blackcap and 3 Cetti's Warbler (CG). 

The cool SE wind didn't deter the 27 Speckled Wood, 33 Orange-tip and 9 Large White butterflies from flying (C. Parkin).

This morning a Cuckoo sang along with 3 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Whitethroats, 2 Goldcrests, several Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs and a Willow Warbler (M.White/S.Cox/A. Corrall/CG).

A Common Sandpiper on the Wader Scrape was new in today (Dave Lomas), and 23 Herring Gulls and 2 LBB Gulls were also present (Keith Bannister).. 

Also of interest Treecreeper and Fox.

Our first Cuckoo of 2025 arrived this morning. It was first seen by Rob & Lynne Frost then heard singing by Angela Marshall, and at around 11.15hrs it was singing again and heard by Richard Laverack and CG.

On the scrapes Little Egret, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 3 Shoveler (2 males displaying), 2 LBB and 1 Herring Gull and 8 Teal.

In addition 1 Grey Partridge, a Goldcrest was in the Yews, 3 Cetti's sang and 3 Swallows came in at dusk (D. Standish/CG).

3 Willow Warblers sang this morning along with 3 Cetti's warblers. 3 LBB Gulls were terrorising the local wildfowl again whilst the Mute swan pair showed no interest in setting up a home.
 
Locally, 4 House martins had returned to the Birkwood Avenue colony in Darfield Road (C. Parkin), and a Holly Blue butterfly was seen in Andrew Corrall's Low Cudworth garden yesterday.

On the scrapes - Little Egret, 2 Snipe, Oystercatcher in at 07.30hrs, Kingfisher, 2 Herring Gulls, 2 LBB Gull, the latter took a small greylag gosling, 8 Teal, 1 pair Shoveler, Lapwing displaying (K. Bannister/J. Finch/L & A Corrall/M.White)

A male Blackcap and a Chiffchaff near the w. scrape were wearing BTO rings, and a Goldcrest sang there.

Butterflies included 5 Large White, 39 Peacock, 8 Comma, 14 Speckled Wood, 1m Brimstone, 18 Orange-tip (2female) and 32 White species (C. Parkin).

           This Dark-edged Bee Fly was found in Richard Laverack's greenhouse yesterday,
           in Low Cudworth

This morning a calling Curlew flew west, 5 Blackcaps and 3 Cetti's Warblers sang and a Little Egret flew north (JP).

This evening 2 Swallows, a displaying Lapwing and the first brood of 7 Greylags were on the waders scrape with 2 pairs of Shoveler (CG).

A Snipe and 3 Buzzards were present. 68 butterflies included 13m Orange-tips and 3 Speckled Wood.
 
Also of interest a Common Lizard, Green Tiger Beetle, 16 Dark-edged Bee Fly and Frog tadpoles (C. Parkin).

Storrs Mill to Ardsley Viaduct via River Dearne

Kingfisher, Sand Martin, 2 Grey Wagtail, 3 Grey Partridge, 2 Mallard nests (12 & 4 eggs).

Butterflies included 73 Peacock, 32 Small Tort., 7 Comma, 2 Speckled Wood, 9m Brimstone, 13m Orange-tip, and 26 White species.  

A female Grass Snake was also of note (C. Parkin).

18 Whooper Swans headed west towards Carlton Marsh at 18.55hrs (K. Bannister).  
 
Edderthorpe Flash
80 Whooper Swans and 56 Avocets were present this morning (R. Laverack).

Little Gull 1 adult flew north 08.00hrs.   

Whooper Swan 68 flew north.  (27 + 41).

White Wagtail 1 on Botany Hill.

Cetti's Warbler  6 males.

Carlton Marsh

On the scrapes 4 Herring Gulls, 2 Dabchicks, 2m Shovelers, 4 Snipe and 5 Tufted Ducks (K. Bannister/J.Finch)

3 Blackcaps sang. A Treecreeper yesterday was of note.

Butterflies included 1 Comma, 1 G.V. White and 2m Orange-tips (L & A Corrall).

Carlton Marsh

2 Grey Partridge and 3 Buzzards were the only notable birds today.

Butterflies were enjoying the spring sunshine, 28 Peacock, 4 Small Tort., 12 Comma, 1 Speckled Wood, 2 Green Veined White, 2 Small White, 2m Orange-tip and 5m Brimstone. 

6 Dark-edged Bee Fly also added colour to the scene along with the first flowers of Cherry, Primrose and Wood Anemone (C. Parkin).

Willow Warbler 1.   Wigeon 11.   Teal 11.

Shoveler 7.   Goldeneye 28.   Great Crested Grebe 3.

Snipe 2.    A Red Kite flew east.  Little Ringed  Plover 1.

Common Gull 2.   Sand Martin 2.   Cetti's Warbler 1 male.

Little Gull 4 (3 adults  +  1 x 1st Winter,  all flew in at 11.20hrs.)

Butterfly: 

Orange Tip 1 female.

Goldeneye 34.   Great Crested Grebe 11.
