Haw Park Wood Fungus consuming a Fly - September 2020

Wintersett Ringing Recovery per @BeckyBailey101

 A Sedge Warbler ADJ4603 was ringed at Wintersett

on 08/08/19 as 1st year bird. 

It was retrapped by Rye Bay RG at Icklesham, Sussex on 17/08/20. 

Thats 375 days later and 334km south (ignoring its previous migration!)

This morning's ringing session produced 28 birds that included 2 reptraps. 3 Reed Warblers, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps, 3 Reed Buntings and 9 Goldfinches. Other birds of interest, a male Tawny Owl that sang at dawn, Redpoll, Kingfisher, 2 Water Rails, 5 Swallows south, and Coal Tit.

A Yellow Wagtail was feeding in the meadow at Allied Bakeries, Carlton (Dave Standish) and 2 Peregrine Falcons were on the chimney stacks at Ardagh Glass works. (K. Bannister)

8 Species of butterfly here, single Small Heath, Common Blue and Red Admiral. 5 Small Copper, 2 Comma, 8 Speckled Wood, 4 Small White and 2 Green Veined White. A male Vapourer and a Silver Y moth were also flying. (Chris Parkin)

Wintersett Ringing Recovery per @BeckyBailey101

Blackcap AJ7177 was ringed at Wintersett as a juvenile on 11/08/20 , and retrapped by North Wilts RG on 14/09/20 showing female plumage. A move of 267km S in 34 days.

Hordron, Monday 28/9/20.

Shooting at Ewden forced a change. Best bird up here was the low flying Lancaster bomber up the little don valley around 1.15pm. Not many birds but plenty Ravens with a total of 12. Good flock of Crossbills over upper hordron but heard only. 1 C Snipe over, 3 Redwing, 4 C Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk 1.

29/9/20 Langsett - PFG, Peregrine + Ravens

I took an elevated view over Langsett from 8.20 to 9.05 on a fine crisp morning and was rewarded with:

Pink footed Geese - 138 ENE (120@8.40, 10@8.43, 1@8.48, 8@8.50)

Peregrine - 1 adult south

Raven - 13 locally north in 2 groups of 6 and 7

Also 2 Redwing south, 4 Skylark north and 7 Greenfinch

28/9/20 Ewden Height vismig + Merlin chase

A watch before work 7.05 to 8.40 on a fine crisp Autumnal morning. 

A group of 7 Redwing were calling upon arrival and remained local during the watch. A Merlin chased a passing Skylark which managed to escape. It was interesting to hear the larks alarm call which alerted other birds including a group of 4 House Martin’s which I hadn’t previously picked up.

A Yellow Wagtail type passed over with some Mipits but didn’t call so it would have to go down as a maybe.

Locally, a family party of 5 Stonechats fed and there was a mixed finch group to include 4 Greenfinch and 7 Goldfinch. 3 Ravens passed locally west.

Moving south - 135 Meadow Pipit, 19 Chaffinch, 11 Pied Wagtail, 5 Crossbill, 7 Linnet, 4 House Martin, 5 Skylark, 2 Song Thrush, 3 Starling, 1 Siskin.

Wintersett + Vis.Mig. 27.09.20

 7 - 14 degrees with sun,  light cloud and a moderate north westerly breeze.

Wintersett Res.Vis.Mig.:  

Going west: 211 Redwing - the first of this autumn!  Snipe 5.

Going south east: Pink-footed Goose 70

Going south: Cormorant 4.  Common Buzzard 2.  

Anglers CP: Black-necked Grebe 2 + 1 WRes.

Wintersett Res: 3 Swifts were over and around the area. House Martin 2.  Chiffchaff 2 + 1 ACP.  Goldenye 4 females.  

Willow Wood Field: 55 alba Wagtails - all appeared to be Pied per GJS + PS.    This evening SD counted  75 Alba Wagtails and 60 Linnet here and  40 Meadow Pipits grounded in Cold Hiendley/Clump field

Insect: A European Hornet, Vespa Crabro, was seen on Haw Park Lane.

Dry with very good light and again very steady birding. Raptors, - Red Kite 1, Merlin 1, Sparrowhawk 1, C Buzzard 8, Kestrel 4. Plus, Raven 7, Crossbill total 18, Redwing 18, Swallow 15. Meadow Pipit c 46 s, Skylark 2 s, Goldfinch flock c 50, Linnet 10, Siskin 4, Redpoll 3.

Wintersett + VisMig - It's been quite a day!! 26.09.20

A much cooler, 10 degrees with varying cloud and a cool northerly breeze.

Anglers CP: Black-necked Grebe 3.  Chiffchaff 4 + 8WRes.  Swallow 7 around + 15 south. House Martin 12.  Redshank 1.  

Wintersett Res.:  A flock of 70 alba wagtails were in the field by the Willow Woodleast , 10 of which were White Wagtails,  brought in by the strong northerly winds from Iceland.    Little Grebe 13 WRes. + 4 ACP.  A Reed Warbler was in the boathouse reeds.  Cetti's Warbler 3 males - northbank, Botany Bay and north east corner.  Kingfisher 1.  Goldeneye 4 females.  Swift 3.  2 Willow Tit on west bank.   

Cold Hiendley Res and VisMig: An Avocet flew in and landed on Cold Hiendley Res.at 14.10hrs and then flew onto Wintersett Res and landed on water in the north west corner, before flying off northwards at 14.15hrs.   4 adult Whooper Swans flew into CHRes.  at 12.45hrs. where they remained until 16.20hrs, when they left eastwards.  150 Skylarks and 150 Meadow Pipits were in the fields.  Blackcap 1 m + 1 f. 

 Wintersett Res and VisMig:  110 Pink-footed Geese flew north west at 14.55hrs.  5 Barnacle Geese  flew north over Cold Hiendley village at 16.02hrs..  Another single Barnacle Goose came in from the north, calling at 17.35hrs, circled the Res. until 17.43hrs, then also left north. These will be wild birds, moving from Svalbard to Caerlaverock in SW Scotland, where they winter.  Our birds tie in with many others reported flying north along the Yorkshire coast, that are re-locating,  after being forced southwards by the gale force northerly winds, in the north sea.   A Rock Pipit flew  south.   A Crossbill flew west.  9 Snipe  and a Golden Plover went west.    15 Swallow south.  Redshank 1. Lepidoptera WRes: 2 Red Admiral - Willow Wood and north east corner.  3 Speckled Wood in Willow Wood and a Small White on west bank.   

Insect:  A European Hornet- Vespa crabro was in the boathouse reeds.

Yesterday 25/9/20 An influx of duck saw 95 Gadwall and 24 Shoveler. A Yellow Wagtail, c70 Meadow Pipits and 10 Skylarks were on a field nearby. (JP)

Today Saturday 26/9/20
This morning 24 Shovelers, c100 BH Gulls, 14 Lapwings, 1 Kingfisher, 1 LBB Gull, 4 Siskin, 2 Chiffchaffs and a male Stonechat at the back of the wader scrape. (JP)

Despite the cold temperatures 1 Red Admiral, 3 Comma, 2 Speckled Wood and 4 Small Copper managed to emerge when the sun briefly shone. (C. Parkin)

 10 - 15 degrees with varying cloud and a strong, northerly wind, with  gusts of30+ mph!

Anglers CP Visible Migration: per   @grayspeight   Some good migration, in strong northerly winds, this morning - Whooper Swan 5 (2,3).   Pink footed Goose 635,  in 15 skeins,  all heading south-east. 

Anglers CP: 3 Black-necked Grebes still present.  Little Grebe 4.  

Wintersett Res: Pochard 105.  A juvenile Hobby was catching dragonflies over the boathouse reeds this afternoon.  Chiffchaff 1.

Botany Bay: per  @StevieD131   A Hobby and a Peregrine flew over this morning.

 A Wheatear was on a ploughed field this morning. On the wader scrape 6 Shoveler, 6 LBB Gull and 3 Herring Gull. Coal Tit, 10 Siskin and a Water Rail were also present. (JP)

 14 - 20 degrees,  hot and sunny with a light, south westerly breeze.

Anglers CP:  A Little Egret flew south at 07.08hrs .  Black-necked Grebes 3.   Little Grebe 3.  Snipe 1.

Insect:  2 European Hornets still around ivy on Stubbs Wall, Haw Park Wood.   

At 11.38hrs the NHS Spitfire flew overhead VisMig Hill, Anglers CP, then shortly after over Steve Denny's garden (see photo),  circled twice over Pinderfields Hospital, then left north.

Green Woodpecker and 2 Buzzards. Butterflies included 3 Red Admiral, 1 Peacock, 1 S. Tortoiseshell, 6 Small Copper, 16 Speckled Wood and 1 Common Blue. No Commas reflects what a poor year they are having. The footbridge over the Dearne under the viaduct has been damaged and pushed into the river. (Chris Parkin)

Today's sightings included 6 LBB Gulls, 6 Shovelers, 3 Kingfishers, 1 Golden Plover south. On the fields, 30 Goldfinches, c100 Linnets, 30 Alba Wagtails, c50 Meadow Pipits and 1 Yellow Wagtail, our first this year! (JP)

Ewden valley 20/9/20.

Good conditions but very steady birding. Peregrine 3 probably 4, Sparrowhawk 1 pair, C Buzzard c 5, Kestrel 6. Raven 5, Stonechat 3, Redpoll 1, Siskin 1. Good for Linnets with a total of around 300 includes a flock of c 200. Meadow Pipit 75 s. + a pair of Skylarks.

 11 - 18 degrees, sunny with 2/8 cloud and a light east north easterly.

Anglers CP:  An adult Common Crane  drifted slowly north east over Moorhouse Lane Ponds, to the east side of ACP at 07.40hrs  (PMeredith).  Black-necked Grebe 3 juveniles. An immature Great Blackbacked Gull  flew north.  A Mediterranean Gull flew south west at 10.35hrs.  Lapwing 250.  Snipe 1 over.  Reed Warbler 2 east bank. 

Wintersett Res: Pochard 107 + 16 ACP.  Goldeneye 4 females.

A Common Crane was calling over fields on rising ground near the reserve at 07.20hrs, our second record and the first since 1993! Also adult Yellow-legged Gull and 2 Buzzards grubbing about on the ploughed field. A Golden Plover flew north and a Redshank south. 20 Skylarks and 10 Meadow Pipits were also of note. (JP)

Butterflies included 10 Small Copper, the largest count so far this year. 6 Comma, 8 Red Admiral, 21 Speckled Wood, 5 Small White, 27 White sp. (Green Veined or Small White) and a Lesser Treble Bar Moth. (Chris Parkin)

4 Blackcaps and a male Goldcrest were the best from ringing this morning until by bottom left molar broke and dropped out!
Willow Tit, Redpoll, Grey Wagtail, male Sparrowhawk, small numbers of Siskin and Meadow Pipit, 2 Kingfisher and a Golden Plover south at 09.24hrs were of note. (CG/JP)

Not much time this morning as it was our work day scrub cutting. However, the highlights as we walked the site were Coal Tit, 3 Lesser Redpoll, 6 Siskin South, 2 single Goldcrests, 1 Snipe east and 6 Golden Plover north at 09.35hrs. A Little Egret, c400 BH Gull, 14 Lapwings and 15 Teal were on the wader scrape. (JP/CG)

 12 - 17 degrees, sunny with 1/8 cloud, inceasing at times,  and light north easterly.

Going north: A juvenile Arctic Tern flew into ACP at 09.40 hrs,  left north at 09.45hrs

Going east:  A cream crowned Marsh Harrier flew east 09.20 - 09.30hrs, and another went east at 10.45hrs.  Pink-footed Geese 40  in 4 skeins (3 + 2 + 5 + 30). 

Going south: Green shank 1 at 10.05hrs + 1 in to ACP at 10.15hrs, then left at 10.20hrs.  Sand Martin 3.  Swallow 35.  Meadow Pipit 144.  Yellow Wagtail 1.  Siskin 1.  Alba. Wagtail 13. Teal 4. Golden Plover 6.  Lesser Redpoll 2.  Reed Bunting 1.   7 Skylark went south east.

c300 Black Headed Gulls were following the plough before coming to bathe in the wader scrape. 10 Shoveler and 12 Tufted Duck were on the main scrape. Also of note 20 Stock Dove, c50 Linnet, 6 Bullfinch, Redpoll south and male Kestrel displaying. (JP/CG)

Wintersett Res:   2 Whimbrel circled over and left west at 08.10hrs and the Black Tern juvenile still present - per @StevieD131.   Goosander 1 redhead.  Little Grebe 6 + 1 ACP..

Wintersett + Insects 13.09.20

17 -20 degrees, hot with varying cloud and a light south westerly breeze.
Wintersett Res:  Black Tern 1 juvenile.  Black-necked Grebe 1 juvenile.  Goosander 1 redhead.    A Water Rail was in the west bank marsh.  Swift 5.  Goldeneye 3 female. A male Cetti's Warbler was in the south west corner. 
Haw Park Lane field: A 1stW Mediterranean Gull was following the tractor.
Odonata: A Brown Hawker was in the SW corner WRes.  A Common Blue Damselfly was at Stubbs Wall.
Vespidae: A Hornet Vespa crabro was on the edge of the Willow Wood + up to 5 more were on the ivy at Stubbs Wall yesterday (Saturday). See photo below taken by Chris Swaine).  2 more Hornets were seen today on ivy at Stubbs Wall near HPWood. 
Lepidoptera: A Red Admiral was on ivy at Stubbs Wall.   A Peacock was at Anglers CP.

Carlton Marsh

Yesterday's Redshank stayed all day along with Little Egret and 18 Lapwings. 

Butterflies included 8 Red Admiral, 1 Comma, 3 Meadow Brown, 23 Speckled Wood, 4 Large White, 8 Small White and 2 GV White. 2 Southern Hawker and 1 Migrant Hawker were also flying. (Chris Parkin)


Wintersett + Ringing + evening update 12.09.20

14 - 18 degrees with sun and 3/8, but increasing cloud, and a westerly breeze.
Anglers CP: The Black-necked Grebe was present this morning.  Swift 3 + 1 CHRes.. Pochard 55 + 8 WRes..  11 Snipe flew west. 
Haw Park Wood: Siskin 16.   
Wintersett Res. and Gull Roost.  Linnet 14 in Ruin field.   The/A juvenile Black Tern flew into roost at 19.15hrs --presumably same bird.
34 birds were ringed this morning: Highlights - 4 Blackcap, 5 Reed Warbler, 4 Chiffchaff, 1 Goldcrest, 11 Lesser Redpoll, 4 Goldfinch, 2 Bullfinch, 2 Tree Sparrow

The Dunlin from yesterday left the wader scrape first thing (JP) and was replaced by a Redshank in at 09.25hrs.and was still present at dusk.(Dave Smith et al) Also of note Swift 1 south, 2 Meadow Pipits south, 1 Little Egret, 9 Shovelers, 74 Gadwall, Green Woodpecker, 20 Linnets and 2 Siskins. 

Tonight c60 Swallows came to roost and a Water Rail called. (Dave Standish/CG), 

A Sand Martin and 2 Snipe flew south over Dave Smith's Carlton home around teatime.

Wintersett Res: A juvenile Peregrine flew over and around, causing mayhem.  Goosander 1 redhead.  Hobby 1 juvenile.  Swift 10.  Goldeneye 4 females.

6.15 to 8.25, a still, cool morning with high cloud cover.

Moving South: 1 LBBG, c200 Meadow Pipit, 32 Redpoll, 31 House Martin, 3 Stock Dove (SW), 64 Siskin, 62 Goldfinch, 14 Swallow, 21 Chaffinch, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Pied Wagtail, 10 Linnet, 8 Starling(SW), 20 Woodpigeon 

Moving North: 15 Goldfinch

Moving West: 1 Snipe

Also, 3 Kestrel, 2 Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, 2+ Jay and c180 Greylag Goose picked up circling around Green Moor area (do they feed in fields here?) before heading towards Midhope/Langsett Res area. 30 split and flew south before 8 returned. All assumed to be local movement.

Ringing this morning with just 1 net provided 29 new ringed including 4 Reed Warblers, 3 Reed Buntings, 9 Blackcaps, 5 Chiffchaffs, 1 Lesser Redpoll and 1 Willow Tit, (which sang after release) 4 Retraps (included 2 Blackcaps) and 1 controlled Blackcap. A female Great Tit ringed 5 years and 45 days ago was retrapped. Also flying around Siskin and Grey Wagtail. (CG)

Also of note Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, 2 Goldcrests and 3 Coal Tits. (JP)

This evening 3 Little Egrets were on the wader scrape with 4 Dabchicks, 20 Teal, 6 Shovelers and a Dunlin, our first for 12 months (Dave Standish)

A Fox was on the prowl at dusk.  

A Red Darvic ringed Mute Swan 052Y seen at Manvers Lake on 14/3/20 was ringed at Parkgate Canal, Rotherham on  25/3/16. (per Dan Sidley Swan Rescue)

A Merlin flew over at 19.15. Also, c30 Mistle Thrush, c15 Pied Wagtail, 3 Jay, 2 Buzzards, 10 Siskin and c50 House Martins

10/9/2020 Midhope Res + surrounding area

 A visit at noon today..112 Greylags were on the res along with 3 Teal, a Moorhen and 4 Little Grebe.

An estimated 300+ House Martin were in the general area with groups feeding over the res, Upper Midhopestones, Low Moor and over the moors to the south. A roving group of c30 Redpoll mingled at times with c50 Siskin plus 8 Crossbill flew over. 

A Chiffchaff sang and 3 Buzzards were around, often circling with the Martins in the fly-feeding fest.

Anglers CP:   Black-necked Grebe 1 juvenile.  Great Creseted Grebe 1 in wing moult.  Wigeon 47 + 2 WRes..  Common Tern 1 adult + 1 juvenile.  Gadwall 212 + 16 WRes.. + 73 CHRes..  Shoveler 18 + 14 WRes..

Many thanks to Paul Jackson @paulolevellerfor alerting us to a Red Kite heading our way from Garmin Lane between Fitzwilliam and Nostell heading towards Nostell Long Row.    It flew into the north bank field 10 minutes later, and was seen feeding

Grey Wagtail, 2 Little Egrets (K. Bannister). Also 9 Shoveler, 25 Teal, 2 Kingfisher and Treecreeper.

Butterflies included 4 Red Admiral, 2 Comma, 1 Peacock, 2 Meadow Brown and 4 Green Veined White.

Migrant and Brown Hawker and a male Ruddy Darter were all on the wing. (CG)

A moth session with H. E. Baumont, C. Parkin and D.M. Smith provided 19 species of macro that included several Centre Barred Sallow, The Sallow, Vines Rustic, Copper Underwing and Old Lady.

Wintersett Res: Swift 4.  Common Tern 1 adult + 1 juvenile.   A Black Tern was seen this evening per @PaulDisken.  Little Grebe 8 + 1 ACP.  Goldeneye 4 females.
Anglers CP: Siskin 6 south.  Cormorant 9 + 4 WRes..

This morning 3 Water Rails, 6 Shovelers, 21 Teal, Little Egret, 18 Lapwings and Kingfisher. Also of note 4 Little Grebes, Willow Tit, Coal Tit, c20 Siskins south, 1 Redpoll north, Great Spot Woodpecker, 2 Buzzards, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel c 20 Canada Geese with a few Greylags. (JP/CG)

This evening 2 Little Egrets were on the wader scrape and c100 Swallows came roost in the reed beds and a Swift was flying with them. (Dave Standish)

At the same time a juvenile Hobby came in and began to chase the Swallows. On the stubble field nearby 12 Linnets, 10 Skylarks and c20 Meadow Pipits. (JP)

Insects today included 2 Red Admirals, 1 Painted Lady, 3 Brown Hawkers, 2 Migrant Hawkers and a male Vapurer moth. (CG)

This morning Little Egret, Grey Wagtail, 14 Tufted Duck (mainly juvs) 23 Teal, 7 Shoveler, 74 Canada and 5 Greylag Geese. A Willow Tit was moving along the embankment and c6 Siskins were feeding in Birch.

This evening Swallows coming in to roost and 4 Swifts. (JP)

Also present - 7 Ravens appeared from towards Bolsterstone with 4 splitting and flying towards Broomhead, Crossbill, Stonechat, Jay, Redpoll

A quick look over Midhope Res had a large adult Buzzard calling to an assumed juvenile, Redpoll, Little Grebe and 2 Tufted Ducks

Anglers CP: A Cream-crowned Marsh Harrier flew east 08.18hrs.  Snipe 1.  Pintail 3.  Shoveler 12.  Shelduck 15.  Teal 21.   Common Tern 1 ault + 1 juvenile.  Wigeon 16 + 9 briefly, then left west.   Swift 5 + 3 south.  Swallow 60.  A Crossbill flew south at 09.15hrs.   A Willow Warblerwas on the Pol.
Wintersett Res: Hobby 1 adult +1 Haw Park. Goldeneye 4 females. Cormorant 5.  Sedge Warbler 1. 
40 Birds were ringed: Highlights were - Chiffchaff 16.  Blackcap 9.  Reed Warbler 6.

Today's highlights were Buzzard 2, Kestrel 3, Peregrine 1 (flushed wader scrape) Teal 8, Shoveler 4, Little Egret 1. 30 Siskin flew south this morning and 3 Red-legged Partridges were in a field nearby. Tonight c300 mixed flock of Canada and Greylag Geese on stubble field. (JP/CG)

A brief vismig session between 6.50 and 8am produced some decent movement.

Moving south: Swallow 193, House Martin 100, Tree Pipit 2, Linnet 5, Siskin 52 (+c20 in area), Meadow Pipit 87, Pied Wagtail 6, Goldfinch 19, Chaffinch 12, Stock Dove 6

Also: Chiffchaff (brief song), Goldcrest, Sparrowhawk and 2 Kestrel

Ingbirchworth Res

Great White Egret in trees west side of reservoir between 1130 and 1220 when it departed high over Yummy Yorkshire then east. I didn't see it until I was sat on the seating at the viewpoint on the east side. Difficult to see depending on the angle of view.

Carlton Marsh

This morning at dawn c200 Greylags and c450 Canada Geese came up the valley to feed on stubble on the top fields. A Grey Wagtail flew SW, 2 Water Rails called, 2 Shoveler present, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Grey Partridges, c6 Siskin, Treecreeper and 2 Cormorant flew north. A lone Swift drifted down the reserve. 3 Reed Warblers, 6 Blackcaps and 4 Chiffchaffs were ringed. 

This afternoon 53 Gadwall, 40 Mallard, 6 Teal and 2 Kingfishers. Southern, Migrant and Brown Hawker were all flying in the sun. (Dave Smith)

11 - 17 degrees with 4/8 but increasing cloud in the evening and a light southerly breeze.
Anglers CP Vis.Mig.  per GJS + PS:  After a dire August, vis-mig finally seemed to begin today!
Going south: Meadow Pipit 9.  Swift 1 + 9 ACP.  Siskin 7.  Yellow Wagtail 4.  Sand Martin 37. Swallow 443.   Common Buzzard 11 drifted through at 11.55hrs.
Anglers CP: A Tree Pipit flew over.  Pintail 1.  Gadwall 48.  Common Tern 2 - an adult and a juvenile.  Cormorant 11.   Hobby 1 south.
Wintersett Res: Goldeneye 3 females.  Shoveler 17 +3 ACP.  Wigeon 17 + 3 ACP.   Teal 17 +  3 WRes.  Common Sandpiper 1. 
Cold Hiendley Res: 2 Little Egret flew in from the south + 1 on ACP left south.
