67 birds were ringed today:

Highlights were:  Chiffchaff 5,   Goldcrest 3,    Reed Warbler,   

Blackcap 2, Lesser Redpoll 22, Goldfinch 20 and Greenfinch 8.

Lepidoptera:

Going south:  Comma 1.  Red Admiral 17. 

Comments:  @Fitzybirder:  A very enjoyable morning, although birds were moving on a very wide front so many were distant. Another great mippit count, reaching 1,000 by 08.20, 2,000 by 08.55 and 3,000 by 09.50. The 4,000th bird went through at 12.24. Over 20,000 mips have been recorded here in the last 10 days or so. Intriguing record of the day must go to the Ruddy Shelduck that went straight through west with a flock of Cormorants!

Upland news 29/9/23.

Broadstones res.- 1 Sand Martin through and c 70 Pinkfeet e at 9-am. Meadow Pipit c10 through, Stonechats heard only in windy conditions. Royd Moor res had a Willow Tit showing and calling briefly 100 yards in from the entrance gate on Royd Moor road. Low Moor/Midhope very steady hour with 3 Ravens, 3 C Buzzards the best. Big downturn in Swallows here with only 1 seen.

Carlton Marsh

30 Pink Feet headed high to the east at 09.40hrs and Skylarks were moving through in small numbers. 

A male Cetti's Warbler sang and a female was ringed, along with a male Blackcap, Chiffchaff and a male Goldcrest.

Also of note 2 Cormorants south and a single Redpoll flew over.  (CG) 2 Peregrine were in residence at Ardagh Glassworks (K. Bannister).

Little Egret, Cormorant and 12 Linnet. Insects on view were; 1 Painted Lady, 30 Red Admiral, 2 Small Tortoiseshell, 41 Comma, 1 Small Copper, 7 Small White and 4 Migrant Hawker including 2 mating.

A Grass Snake was taking advantage of the warm sunshine (C. Parkin).

Going east:   Pink-footed Geese 550 in 9 skeins.

Going south:  Swallow 39.  House Martin 11.  Meadow Pipit 215.

Going west: Skylark 44.

A Ringtail Hen Harrier flew over west at 11.35hrs.

A male  Cetti's Warbler  was in the boathouse reeds.  Shoveler 26.  

A juvenile Peregrine flew over . Pintail 1 + 2  flew north.

Gadwall 114 WRes/CHRes. + 56 ACP.   Hobby 2 juveniles.

Wintersett Res:

Little Grebe 27 + 7 ACP.   Pintail 2 + 4 + 2 = 3 left south.

Yellow-legged Gull 1 adult. ( Psycho!).  Goldeneye 2 females.

Pink-footed Goose  60 south  + 420 east.   

22 Pink-footed Goose east at 14.20hrs.

Feral Pigeon 104 south west field.  Arctic Tern 1 juvenile.

Great Crested Grebe 1 M/L young.

Anglers CP:

Cetti's Warbler 1 east bank.   Great Black-backed Gull 1 adult. 

Chiffchaff 2 + 3 WRes..

Going north:

Raven 2.

Going south:

Swallow 5.

Cold Hiendley Res:

Hobby 2 juveniles. 

Insects:

A Brown Hawker and a Migrant Hawker  were over Botany Bay.

Low Moor/Midhope 28/9/23 .

Osprey south over Ewden height at 2-35pm. Pinkfeet c 150 e at 3-00pm. Raven 4 with good numbers of Swallows and Mipits blogging.

Wilthorpe Marsh west 28/9/23.

Pinkfeet c 120 w at 10-45 am. Not a deal else with G and GS Peckers, Woodpigeon starting to build c 100. Still a few Chub to be seen from the river bridges.

Carlton Marsh

30 Pink Feet Geese flew south at 12.00hrs. Around 20 Pied Wagtails continued to feed on a tilled field and 20 Linnets were on a cut down Oil Seed Rape field.

20 Meadow Pipits and 10 Skylarks were moving SW (L & Corrall).

Geoff Miller's garden lies about half a mile as the crow flies to the east of Carlton Marsh on the urban fringe. Therefore Geoff often sees good birds going over the garden. Today was no exception. A Tit flock comprising of 27 Blue Tits, 9 Great Tits, 14 Longtailed Tits and 5 Chiffchaffs made their way through the hedgerow between 9.30am and 10am.

Carlton Marsh

50 Canada Geese alighted on an adjacent field where 20 Pied Wagtails were feeding, 15 Swallows south were followed by a steady stream of Skylarks SW and 12 Meadow Pipits during the morning. A single Redpoll flew over as did a Grey Wagtail. Also present Kingfisher, 2 Cetti's Warbler (1 re-trapped), and 2 Reed Warblers and 2 Chiffchaffs were ringed.

Insects on show included a female Willow Emerald, 2 male Ruddy Darter, 6 Red Admiral and a male Vapourer moth (CG/JP/L. A. Corrall).

2 Little Egret were in the shallows.   Chiffchaff 1 + 10 WRes..

Shelduck 1 juvenile.   Little Grebe 7 + 23 WRes..  Wigeon 9.

Cetti's Warbler  4:  1 male Boathouse reeds + 1 male west bank marsh, 

1 male SW corner + l  male north east corner.   

Swallow 3.   Hobby 1 juvenile north west.  

A Bearded Tit was calling in the west bank marsh.

Carlton Marsh

10 Canada Geese, 9 Shoveler, 16 Teal and Water Rail this afternoon (CG). This evening 5 Swallows south, and 12 Greylags came in a dusk (D. Standish).

Storrs Mill to Ardsley Viaduct on the River Dearne
1 Grey Partridge, 2 Cormorant, Mute Swan with 4 cygnets, and a Grey Wagtail.

Insects included 42 Red Admiral, 57 Comma, 12 Speckled Wood, 4 Small Tortoiseshell (my first anywhere since 28th August) and 5 Small Copper. Also  male Vapourer moth and a Hornet (C. Parkin)

Low Moor/Midhope. 23/9/23.

Good start with an Osprey circling over Midhope Moors before flying to Langsett res about 10-30 am. Raven 2 and Meadow Pipits, House Martins, Swallows on the move but difficult to count from here as most things blog about.

Butterflies also moving with 41 Red Admirals South West.

Carlton Marsh

A Wheatear was on a nearby field (K. Bannister) and at least 20 Meadow Pipits flew south along with 5 Skylarks and 8 House Martins.
2 Goldcrests and 2 Cetti's Warblers called and 3 adults and 1 immature Red-legged Partridge were of note (L & A Corrall/S. Grove).

A Hobby flew south over Beech Avenue, Cudworth at 09.25hrs (G. Miller)

Going south:  Meadow Pipit  -  4140 to 10.15hrs.  

1000 by 07.30, 2000 by 08.07, with only one counter! 3000 by 08.35hrs, 4000 by 09.50hrs.

A Marsh Harrier flew south at 07.45hrs.

House Martin  86.   Skylark 38.  Swallow 41.   alba Wagtail 2. 

Going east:

Pink-footed Geese 755 in 6 skeins:  

90 at 08.35hrs, then 240 + 230+ 30 + 55 + 110.

A Wheatear was on the north bank. 

A Red-breasted Merganser flew over low to Anglers CP,  and presumably north 11.22hrs.

Carlton Marsh

5 Wheatears came in overnight, a Yellow Wagtail flew south and 3 Whitethroats were present.
A steady stream of Meadow Pipits flew through during the morning (JP/ L & A Corrall).

The warm sunshine produced lots of Brown Hawker, Migrant Hawker and Southern Hawker dragonflies as well as 1 Painted Lady, 23 Red Admiral, 16 Comma, 24 Speckled Wood, and 1 Small Copper. 3 Silver Y moths were also in evidence (C. Parkin). 

Wilthorpe Marsh west 21/9/23.

Main marsh had a feeding party of 1 Whinchat and 2 male Stonechats. Fem type Wheatear was at the west end on fences and a calling Raven went north, the first since last winter.

Highlights were: 

Meadow Pipit 8340,    Pink feet 515,    Grey Plover 1,    Hobby 3,   

Marsh Harrier 1 over WRes, landed in bushes by Mousehole.  

Hawfinch 1 south  over Haw Park.   A Raven flew over Haw Park.

Skylark 83,   House Martin 224,   Sand Martin 18,    Swallow 52,   

Siskin 37   Common Sandpiper 2.

21/9/23 Ewden Height vis mig

A fantastic vismig session from 6.50 to 8.50 with Meadow Pipits moving southwards throughout and on a broad front which made it overwhelming at times to count. The total recorded will be a fraction of the actually number moving. There was a good supporting cast also including 8 finch and 3 wagtail species, including my first Crossbill for a while and first Skylark movement too. A juvenile Hobby appeared over the moor briefly.

Carlton Marsh

17 Teal, 1 Little Egret, and 2 Cetti's Warbler sang. Also of note 3 Yellow Wagtails and c60 Goldfinch.

3 Red Admiral were on Buddlea (K. Bannister/CG).

About 100 metres of the southern meadow boundary hedge has been laid in the time old way by ace hedger, Jasper Pratchek, with a little help from K. Bannister.

36 House Sparrows were feeding in the field.

During recent days the highlights were; 110 Pink Feet south on 12th followed by 60 more at 13.06hrs (D. Standish/JP).

2 Raven south on 13th (K. Bannister/J. Pratchek), 12 Shoveler and a Wheatear on 15th (KB),  

Insects included a male Black Darter on 11th (L & A Corrall) and a Painted Lady on 15th (C. Parkin).

Low Moor/Midhope 17/9/23.

Observers - G and J Wasse, S Green. Turned into a productive afternoon with the years first Marsh Harrier a few times which was mobbed by a fem type Merlin. Other raptors were 2 Hobbys quite close, 3 Sparrowhawks, 3 C Buzzards, 3 Kestrels. Raven 5, still 1 mobile Curlew about, Siskin 5, Redpoll 12, Spotted Flycatcher 2, GS Pecker 1. Going s were c 30 Swallows, c 15 House Martins, 2 Grey Wagtails.

A Red-throated Diver,  in summer plumage, flew in at 11.00hrs, 

before leaving  North at 11.27hrs .(PS et al)

3 Pintail all left west.   A Knot went North east at 07.42hrs.  

Snipe 6 went North.   Hobby,  Peregrine.   Just 5 Meadow Pipits flew south.

A Spotted Flycatcher was in the Willow Wood.  Redshank 1.

Lepidoptera: 

Red Admiral 1.   3 Willow Emerald  over Pol Board Walk Pond.  Clifden Nonpareil, 

Vestal and Pinion-streaked Snout and 1st record of Small Blood Vein

were the highlights  of an exellent catch @Wintersett1 last night.

An adult Mediterranean Gull on rocks, south bank ACP, flew to WRes, 15.30hrs.

A Red Kite flew over the Willow Wood.

2 Wheatears were in the north bank field.

A Red-crested Pochard , eclipse drake flew to Wintersett Res. at 07.40hrs. (GJS et al.)

The juvenile Black Tern still present.    Wigeon 2.

Great White Egret  flew north east at 09.00hrs. ( GJS, PW.)

A Turnstone flew over, left east.  09.05hrs.  (GJS. PW)

90 Pink footed Geese flew south east at 10.28hrs + 36 at 13.30 hrs.  + 12 south east at 13.35hrs.

Going east: Pink-footed Geese 12 + 38 + 22 + 36 + 40 + 7. 

Caspian Gull  1 x 1stW.   Shelduck 1 juvenile.  Pintail 1 female.

Herring Gull 30.   Lesser Black-backed Gull 280.  Snipe 2.
