Buzzard 6 and a adult Peregrine were all in the air together around mid day, Cormorant 7, Goosander 3, Shoveler 36, Pochard 1, Lapwing 450, Golden Plover 73. The only birds on a inviting-looking Houghton were Ruff 3 and Green Sand 2.

Langsett Reservoir - 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Peregrine, 10 Canada Geese west and 58 Mallards. Gull roost - 486 Black-headed Gulls, 3 Common Gulls, 3 adult Yellow-legged Gulls, 763 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 1 first-winter Great Black-backed Gull.

Whooper Swan 2 adults left south at 11.46 hrs, Pink -footed Goose 60 NE, Wood Pigeon 100, Skylark 78, Swallow 104, House Martin 1, Meadow Pipit 197, Siskin 42, Linnet 53, alba Wagtail sp 24, Chaffinch 42.
Also present: Shovelers 56, Peregrine 3, Snipe 1. Common Buzzard 4 + 4 flew south this afternoon. An adult Yellow-legged Gull flew in at 15.30 hrs.
Wintersett Res: Chiffchaff 4 ringed. Blackcap 2 ringed. One weighed 24.1grams (usual weight is 17-18grams) This bird will be capable of flying to Africa without refuelling. 2 Reed Warblers were also caught. One weighed 14.4grams It was originally ringed on 27/09/12 when it weighed 10.7 grams The weight gain of this bird would probably enable it to reach SW Iberia, where it could refuel on its way to West Africa.
Also flying: Comma, Speckled Wood, Small Tortoiseshell, Small White and Migrant Hawker.

Ringing recovery
A Black-headed Gull ringed as a nestling at Broomhill Flash on 23rd May 2000 was found (fate unknown) at Garstang, Preston (Lancashire) on 25th September 2012. A distance of 102 km to the WNW, after a period of 4508 days (12 years, 4 months, 2 days). The oldest known for the area to date.

Broomhil/Old Moor
A Lesser-spotted Woodpecker flew over Broomhill towards the park this evening following a sighting of a possible on Warbler Way earlier. On the Flash both Common and Green Sands as well as 2 Little Egrets. Birds at Old Moor included 1,090 Golden Plover, 4 Green Sands and 2 Spot Reds. Quiet yesterday.

Had a walk down to North Ings
as well. This place is looking fab! Looking into the sun but could see a few
teal and wigeon flying about.
Had a look in the book at Old Moor - nothing much in there.
There seems to be a lack of wader passage at the moment. To say that it's only
the beginning of October there isn't many wading birds being recorded on
Birdguides. I wonder if the bulk of waders have gone through earlier this year e.g. starting in early July. Does
this have any implications for Wath Ings during July next year?

Carlton Marsh
Scrub bashing this morning on our first work-day of the autumn, but before that we were treated to an aerobatic display by 3 Common Buzzards over the main marsh. We also noted a late male Southern Hawker, about 10 male Migrant Hawkers and a Red Admiral.
