Wild goose chase

What's happening with the geese?  In the nine years we've lived at Carlton the goose count on our nearby Athersley Memorial Fishing Lake has been a consistent zero.  This autumn we've had loads of movement over the house more than once every day and I was happy to see a couple of Canadas on the lake recently rising to a dozen later.  A few days ago I was well surprised to count 56 Canadas on there!  Today I lost count at 200 Canadas and over 100 Greylags on the lake!!

It has has been very quiet of late, most of our wildfowl left during the floods. I suppose with this much water around they are spoiled for choice as to where they can go to feed. Today just a pair of Mute Swans (a different pair), 2 Cormorants, 2 Tufted Ducks, a Grey Wagtail and a Cetti's Warbler.

180 Linnets on nearby telegraph wires is a good number at any time of year though (K. Bannister).
