The Birds of the Wintersettt Area - Steve Denny
The earliest fully dated record we have is from 04 July 1822 by Charles Waterton.
‘About half past one in the afternoon.in the park at Walton Hall, I heard the Cuckoo call repeatedly’. And so began over two hundred years of proper bird recording in the Wintersett area! Waterton recorded observations until his death in 1865 and was superseded by William Talbot who published ‘The Birds of Wakefield’ in 1876, which included records for the Wintersett area. ‘The Birds of Yorkshire' by Thomas Nelson in 1907 covered the remainder of the 19th Century.
The iconic pose of Great Crested Grebes on the front cover was taken by Ron Marshall.
All photos are of the actual birds seen at Wintersett.
Many thanks to all the photographers that have given permission for their images to be used.
