Wintersett Sightings July 27th 2025

Anglers CP:

Common Scoter - 65 flew high north west at 08.40hrs.

Wintersett Res:

200  Swallows left the roost at dawn.

A female Goosander was on the wader scrape during the morning (P. Rawson).

Kingfisher was present and 2 Purple Hairstreaks were flying in the top of an Oak Tree (CG).

Wintersett Bird sightings Thursday 25th July 2025

Anglers CP:

Oystercatcher 1.  Common Gull 1 x 1st Summer

Wintersett Res:

Redshank 1 on jetty.   Water Rail 1.   Goldeneye 2 females.

Common Tern 16.  

A brood of young Cetti's Warblers were by the boathouse.

4 Crossbill flew north at 11.50hrs.

Woolley & Carlton Marsh

Woolley 23/7/25 
20 species of butterfly included 3 Painted Lady, 1 Wall Brown, 1 Small Blue, 5 Brown Argus, 45 Common Blue, 2 Holly Blue, 9 Small Heath, 273 Gatekeeper, and 31 Peacock.
In addition a Humming Bird Hawk Moth feeding on Teazel, 10 Pyrausta purpuralis and a female Banded Agrion (C. Parkin).

Also 20 Gatekeeper, 1 Common Blue, 2 Small Heath, 6 Meadow Brown and a male Southern Hawker (L & A Corrall/M.White/CG).

A Red Underwing in Les Corrall's garden on 21/7/25 was very early.  I haven't seen one since 2016! 
A Painted Lady visited his garden today 24/7/25.

Wintersett Bird and Insect Sightings July 19th 2025

Anglers CP: 

Little Egret 1 flew south.

2  Ring-necked Parakeets flew east at 09.40hrs. 

Pochard 4.   Oystercatcher 1.  Little Ringed Plover 1.

Mallard 23.   1 Crossbill  flew west.  11.15hrs    

Shoveler 2

Grey Wagtail 2.

Dragonflies:

Lesser Emperor 1 male.  

Emperor Dragonfly 5 males + 3 females.

Black-tailed Skimmer 5 males + 2 females.

Small Red-eyed Damselfly 4 males.

Carlton Marsh & Barrow Reclamation

Birds included Treecreeper, 9 Canada Geese, 6 Grey Heron, 3 Kingfisher, 2 Dabchick and 1 Oystercatcher.

Also single Six Spot Burnet Moth, Common Blue, Ruddy Darter and 2 Red Admiral (J. Finch/K. Bannister/CG).

Littleworth Park - Monk Bretton

Despite the drought, firestarters and off-road moor bikes 19 species of butterfly included 1 Dingy Skipper, 474 Meadow Brown, 469 Gatekeeper, 15 Small Heath, 5 Brown Argus, 31 Common Blue, 1 Holly Blue, 3 Small Copper (Chris Parkin).

Wintersett Sightings 16th July 2025.

Wintersett Res:

A Little Egret flew over. 

Common Tern 16.   Kingfisher 1.   Grey Heron 4.   Goldeneye 1 female.  

Anglers CP: 

Common Sandpiper 2.   Oystercatcher 1.     Little Egret 1 flew south at 08.20hrs.

A Goldeneye female flew in at 12.00hrs,  then left south,

Grey Heron 2.   Ringed Plover 1 flew south at 11.15hrs.

Black-tailed Godwit - 2 flew east at 12.20 hrs.  

Swift 782 south + 50 present.   Sand Martin 180 south  + 30 present.

House Martin 90 south + 50 present.   Swallow 30 flew south.

Butterflies:

Brown Argus 1.   Painted Lady 1.  Small Copper 1.  Common Blue 1 male.

Moths:

Red-tipped Clearwing 1.   6  Belted Clearwing 1.   Lunar Hornet Moth 1

Dragonflies:

Red-veined Darter 2 males.

 On the wader scrape 1 LRP, 3 Lapwings, 2 Oystercatchers, 1 drake Teal (K. Bannister/CG).

A Kingfisher was on the scrape with the Heron below.

Last nights moths included my first ever Privet Hawk Moth, Small Phoenix, Brown Line Bright Eye, 2 Dusky Sallow 6 Elephant Hawk Moths, 1 Poplar Hawk Moth and lots more.

Carlton Marsh/Low Cudworth/Storrs Mill

Carlton Marsh
Kingfisher and  2 juvenile Great Spotted Woodpeckers. 5 Oystercatchers on the wader scrape at 06.49hrs (K. Bannister) was a new maximum count, beating the previous record of 4 in May 1987. Also several Gatekeepers and a Holly Blue (CG)
 
Low Cudworth
A Humming Bird Hawk Moth was feeding on Valerian in Dave Standish's garden this morning.

Storrs Mill to Ardsley Viaduct
3 Grey Wagtail, 12 Greylag, and 2 Grey Partridge.
 
19 species of butterfly included 12 Red Admiral, 97 Peacock, 37 Comma, 92 Speckled Wood, 7 Purple Hairstreak, 2 Brown Argus, 2 Common Blue, 2 Holly Blue, 3 Small Copper and 1m Brimstone. 
Also yet another Humming Bird Hawk Moth feeding on Valerian,, c50 Banded Agrion, and a Grass Snake for good measure (Chris Parkin).

Wintersett Sightings 09.07.2025

Anglers CP:

Little Egret 1.   Little Ringed Plover 1 adult.   Oystercatcher 1.

Common Tern 5.   Yellow Wagtail 1 juvenile.

Wintersett Res: 

A Bittern flew from south west corner and dropped into 

south east corner Reed Bed at 10.57hrs.  It then flew to

west bank marsh at  11.05hrs.

Carlton Marsh update 7th July 2025

2 Oystercatchers were on the wader scrape.

3 Purple Hairstreaks were the first this year. 1 Painted Lady, 15 Red Admiral, 12 Peacock, 31 Comma, 26 Speckled Wood, 195 Meadow Brown, 117 Ringlet, 107 Gatekeeper, 3 Large Skipper, 36 Small Skipper, 5 Common Blue, 3 Small Copper, and 72 Large White.

Also of note 1m Ruddy Darter, 1 Pied Hoverfly (Scaeva pyrastri) (Chris Parkin).

Woolley/Cudworth & Carlton Marsh

Woolley 4th July
17 species of butterfly included 230 Gatekeepers, 12 Marbled Whites, 1 Small Blue and 9 Common Blues (C. Parkin).
 
Low Cudworth 
A Humming Bird Hawk Moth was feeding on Valerian in Les Corrall's garden on 3rd July.
 
4 Peregrine Falcons were flying over Firth Avenue at 09.26hrs on 5th July (D. Standish). They are almost certainly the breeding pair from Ardagh Glassworks with their 2 offspring.

A Barn Owl has been hunting regularly in the evenings. This one appears to be ringed.

A pair of Teal and 13 Herring Gull were present on 5th July (K. Bannister).
2 LRP's and an Oystercatcher were on the wader scrape on 6th July (D. Standish).
 
Today 7th July  
Single Oystercatcher and LRP were on the wader scrape. 
A Curlew called as it flew over at c11.30hrs, a Sand Martin flashed through, and a Goldcrest sang in the car park. An adult male Kestrel, grounded, appeared to be unwell  (L & A Corrall).
Earlier a  Common Tern came in to feed at 09.26hrs and left east at 09.40hrs (CG).
5 Gatekeepers and a Comma were amongst the many Ringlets flying.

Cudworth Moths 30/6 - 1/7/25

The very hot humid air conditions were ideal for trapping moths last night. Here are the highlights from my Newtown garden; Grey Arches, Swallow Prominent, Burnished Brass, The Miller, Green Silver Lines, Poplar Grey, Scarce Footman, Turnip Moth, Vapourer and 16 Elephant Hawk Moths.
