Carlton Marsh

A ringing session this evening proved to be very good. Of the 44 birds caught in 2 nets only 2 were retraps. They  included 6 Reed Warblers, 2 Blackcaps, 3 Whitethroats, 1 Garden Warbler, 2 Willow Warblers, 11 Chiffchaffs, 2 Reed Buntings, 8 Blue Tits, 2 Willow Tits and 4 Longtailed Tits. A cracking male Southern Hawker managed to release itself from the net.

Meantime 2 Green Sandpipers flew SE at 20.20hrs and Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers were close by.

As dusk approached a fledged juvenile Tawny Owl came close to the hide and perched for us briefly and Noctule and Pipistrelle Bats were hunting overhead.

Earlier in the day a Water Rail called and a male Banded Demoiselle was seen from the hide, its still scarce here.

All the Egrets tonight were either on Old Moor when I arrived or came from down the valley. Today there were 17 Little Egrets at Adwick, therefore not all of them are roosting at Old Moor, volunteers required to find other roost sites. Don't all rush at once.

2013 Records

Can anyone with any un-submitted 2013 records please get them to me a.s.a.p. There may be a prize in it - you never know.

Old Moor Nocturnal Report - Friday 1st August

Mere - Green Sandpiper 1, Barnacle Goose 1.

Wader Scrape - Common Sandpiper 3.

Main Marsh - Mute Swan 19. Wigeon 2, Lapwing 530, Oystercatcher 6, Dunlin 1 adult, Green Sandpiper 2, Snipe 3, Common Tern 1 adult + 1 juv, Kestrel 1, Sparrowhawk 1, Green Woodpecker 1.

Roost in willows on Willow Pool - Grey Heron 5, Cormorant 7, Little Egret 16, Great White Egret 1.

The Great White Egret dropped into the roost at 20.21, it came in from up the valley.

The Little Egrets came in as follows - 6 already in, 1 at 19.05, 3 at 19.56, 1 at 20.05, 3 at 20.31, 1 at 20.40 and finally 1 at 20.53. We thought we might break the record tonight but failed miserably, our optimism was based on the numbers seen in the valley during the day. At 10.45 there were 2 on the Main Marsh, 16 at Adwick, 2 at Edderthorpe and 7 at Denaby making a grand total of 27 birds. Obviously not all the Egrets are roosting at Old Moor, the most suitable other roost site is Denaby, does anyone have any evidence of a roost at Denaby? All the Little Egrets we saw fly in tonight came in from down the valley - Adwick?

As I was leaving tonight a Tawny Owl was perched on the Cafe Balcony at the Visitor Centre.

Edderthorpe, Friday morning

Lots of wildfowl to look through on the Flash;- Shoveler 14, Mallard 460, Gadwall 127, Teal 14, but I can't find anything different amongst them. Little Egret 1, Little Grebe 17. Not many waders still but then again there weren't yesterday morning either and then a few were seen later in the day;- this morning - Green Sandpiper 1, Common Sandpiper 5, Oystercatcher 1, Ringed Plover 6, Dunlin 3.

Old Moor Nocturnal Report - Thursday 31st July

Mere - Green Sandpiper 2, Common Sandpiper 2.

Wader Scrape - Barnacle Goose 1.

Main Marsh - Mute Swan 19, Wigeon 1, Lapwing c250, Oystercatcher 5, Black Tailed Godwit 4, Green Sandpiper 2, Snipe 1, Kestrel 1.

Roost in willows on Willow Pool - Grey Heron 5, Cormorant 8, Little Egret 13, Great White Egret 1.

The Little Egrets came in as follows - 2 already in, 1 at 19.54, 2 at 20.09, 1 at 20.10, 3 at 20.15, 2 at 20.18, 1 at 20.35 and finally 1 at 21.15. Of the 11 Egrets I saw come in 10 came from down the valley and 1 from up the valley.

The main news tonight was the Great White Egret which had been present all day (I think), while I was in the Field Pool West hide tonight I saw the Great White flying towards the willows on the Willow Pool. However there was no sign of it from any of the hides and we weren't sure if it had gone to roost or not? Then at 21.15 it flew out of the willows had a fly round and then flew back in. Hopefully it will still be with us tomorrow.

There was a dead adult Lesser Black Back on the breeding island tonight, don't know if it was one of the pair or more lunch?
