Wintersett Fungi 05.10.20 - Francis Hickenbottom

Aniseed funnel (Clitocybe odora) at Haw Park, near the notice board. As the name suggests, it has a sweet smell.

Wintersett + Vis.Mig + Insects 05.10.20

12 - 15 degrees with  high thin cloud and a light westerly.

 Anglers CP Vis.Mig.   Pink-footed Goose - circa 1200  south east between 08:30 & 09:30 + 110  east at 10.15hrs.  Redwing 4 flew south west. 

Anglers CP:  3  Black-necked Grebes still present.  Chiffchaff 8 + 2 CHRes.  + 1 WRes.. Swallow 3. Yellow-legged Gull 1 adult.  Snipe 4. 

Wintersett Res: 5 Brambling were in the boathouse hedgerow.  Kingfisher 1.  Nuthatch 1 Pits Wood +   1 south of road.

Cold Hiendley Res: Little Grebe 2.

Insect: European Hornet - Vespa crabro 3 Haw Park Lane.  

Lepidoptera:  Small Tortoiseshell 1west bank CHRes.   Small White 1 CHRes.  + 1 Pits Wood.

Odonata: 2 Migrant Hawkers - west bank CHREs + north bank WRes.  A Common Darter was on the south bank CHRes..   A late date Common Blue Damselfly was on the spillway CHRes.

This morning the Pintail was on the wader scrape. (JP) It flew on to the main scrape at 15.25hrs. (CG)

17 Cormorants flew east at 07.30hrs and a Red Kite north at 08.05hrs. (K. Bannister) Little Egret, 2 Kingfisher, 19 Lapwing, Grey Wagtail, 24 Shoveler, 1 immature Common Gull, 2 Buzzards, Goldcrest, Willow Tit, 2+2 Jay were seen from the wader scrape viewpoint.

Elsewhere Water Rail, Chiffchaff, Treecreeper and 28 Jackdaw.

3 Red-eared Terrapins were basking in the main scrape and a large Carp was surfacing.
A pair of Common Darter and at least 6 Migrant Hawkers were on the wing.

Locally c150 Pink Feet flew east over Shafton at 08.45hrs (D. Standish) and two skeins of around 100 in each flew east over Storrs Mill at 09.15hrs and 09.45hrs. (A. Vincent)

Littleworth Park - Monk Bretton  
8 Fieldfare flew NE at 12.30hrs. 
Butterflies included a very late Holly Blue, 1 Small Heath, 1 Common Blue, 2 Small Copper, 1 Comma, 9 Speckled Wood, 3 Small White and 1 G.V. White. (Chris Parkin)

Wintersett + Ringing 04.10.20

 10 - 12 degrees witn sun, 6/8 cloud and a light north westerly.

Anglers CP:  A Rock Pipit flew south at  07:50 and 3 Black-necked Grebes were still present 08:30 per @BeckyBailey101.   5 Pintail dropped onto the lake at 09.05hrs  per  @StevieD131
 17 Whooper Swans dropped in at 10.00hrs.  They were seen over Moorhouse Lane Ponds at 11.05hrs and picked up at 11.15hrs over Fittzwilliam CP  by @Fitzybirder. A flock of 17 House Martin flew south. 

Botany Bay: 35 Pink-footed Goose south east over  at 09:34hrs  per @CroftonBirder.

32 birds were ringed this morning. 

Highlights were: Chiffchaff 8.  Goldfinch 1.  Lesser Redpoll 18.  Siskin 1.  Chaffinch 1.

Odonata: A Migrant Hawker was on the Pol at Anglers CP.

Today's best 26 Teal, c70 Gadwall, 15 Shoveler, 2 Coal Tit, 2 Goldcrest, single Redpoll and Siskin and 20 Meadow Pipit on stubble. A Pintail was on the wader scrape at 17.00hrs left north at 17.45hrs. It was the first for 2 years. (CG/JP, D. Standish)

Butterflies included 2 Red Admiral, 1 Peacock, 2 Comma, 3 Speckled Wood, 2 Small White and 7 Small Copper. (Chris parkin)

Wintersett 03.10.20

11 - 13 degrees with 8/8 grey cloud and rain all day!

Wintersett Res:  Two immature Scaup in front of boathouse on WintersettRes., then flew over to Anglers CP, returned to WRes at 10.30hrs.   Goldeneye 4 females + 1 female Anglers CP.  Little Grebe 10 + 7 ACP.  Goosander 2 over.   Snipe 4 + 1 ACP.  Dunlin 5 over.  Swallow 5.  House Martin 9 

Anglers CP:  The 3 Black-necked Grebes.  A Dunlin flew north. Teal 21.  Great Crested Grebe 15.  Yellow-legged Gull 1 adult.  Chiffchaff 2.

Wintersett + VisMig. 02.10.20

12  - 13 degrees with 8/8 cloud and a cold north easterly wind. 

Wintersett Res. VisMig: 

 Going north:  A Grey Plover landed on weed in the water, then left north 07.30hrs - 07.40hrs.  

Going south: Swallow 1.  House Martin 6.

Anglers CP: Black-necked Grebe 3.  House Martin 4 + 6 WRes..  Snipe 2.  

Wintersett Res:  5 male Cetti's Warbler - 2 north bank + 1 SW Botany Bay + 1m NE bank + 1 boathouse bench    Chiffchaff 8 + 1 ACP.   Pochard 67.  Teal 13.   Goldeneye 4 females.  Willow Tit 1 SW corner. A Red Kite flew north over,  and 30 Linnets were in the Ruin field.  5 Common Sandpipers on the boathouse walkway late this afternoon.  A 1stW Mediterranean Gull was in at 15.45hrs. A Dunlin flew over.  45 Robins were around WRes. + Botany Bay.

Odonata: Migrant Hawker 1 south bank WRes..   

Lepidoptera:  WRes. Small White 1 west bank and a Speckled Wood was by the boathouse bench.

Wintersett + Vis.Mig + Ringing 01.10.20

 9 - 14 degrees with sun, 3/8 cloud and a light north easterly.

Anglers CP VisMig:per @grayspeight

Going east: Pink footed Goose: 680 in 12 skeins between 08.45 and 09.50. 

Going south: Skylark 90,  MeadowPipit 92, Swallow 36 , Lesser Redpoll 63. Song Thrush 2.  Mistle Thrush 1.  Alba Wagtail sp. 10, Chaffinch 10.  Linnet 10.  Reed Bunting 9.  An almost 'white' Common Buzzard,  not a local bird,  and clearly a migrant.

Anglers CP: 3 Black-necked Grebes still present. 

Winterset Res: Reed Warbler 3 on north bank. Chiffchaff 10.

25 Birds were ringed: Chiffcaff 6.  Reed Warbler 1.  Goldcrest 3.  Reed Bunt 4.  Lesser Redpoll 9.  

Lepidoptera:  Comma 1 in Willow Wood.

Odonata: Migrant Hawker 1 Pol ACP + 1 boathouse reeds WRes.

130 Pink Feet Geese SE at 09.17hrs. were our first of the autumn. (K. Bannister) 

Others of note 2 + 1 Coal Tit, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Buzzard, Kingfisher, Water Rail, Chiffchaff and 30 Shoveler, a new record total. (CG/JP)

20 Skylarks and c40 Meadow Pipits were on a stubble field this evening. (JP)

At mid-day it was just warm enough for 1 Red Admiral, 1 Large White, 1 Small White, 1 Small Copper and 2 Speckled Wood. (Chris Parkin)


Ewden valley 1/10/20

Cold at times but dry apart from a small rogue bit of drizzle. Rt Hen Harrier 1, probably 2, Sparrowhawk 1, C Buzzard 3 eventually, scarce for most of the time. Kestrel 3, Raven 8, flock 17 Pinkfeet n, Stonechat 10. Meadow Pipit 71 mostly blogging, Redpoll 3 n, Bullfinch 3 and 1 Redwing feeding in rowans which are loaded with berries.
