Wintersett + Moths 04.10.2022

Anglers CP:

4 Rock Pipit  and 1 male Stonechat were in north east corner.

Brambling 4 .  Chiffchaff 1.   5 Snipe flew west. 

Pochard 100 + 53 WRes..  Teal 14.  Shoveler 14.  

Great Crested Grebe 10 + 20 WRes.. + 17 CHRes..

Little Grebe 5 + 15 WRes..  

Overnight moth trapping produced another rare migrant -

Only the 3rd record of Scarce Bordered Straw!  

The previous two being in September 2006,  which was the year of a massive influx to Britain.

Wintersett Res: 

The Great White Egret was on the south bank.   Pintail 1.  

A hybrid, drake Aythya Duck was on this morning.

Carlton Marsh

 The Barn Owl was hunting over the reed beds and scrape at dusk (Dave Standish).

Going north:

The usual Great White Egret was on Wintersett Res.

before heading off north  at 09.33hrs. 

Going south:

Skylark 71.   Swallow 6.  Song Thrush 1.  alba Wagtail sp.

6.  Meadow Pipit 90.  Greenfinch 4.  Linnet 27.  

Goldfinch 40.  Siskin 4. 

Going west:

Pink-footed Goose 321 in 6 skeins up to 09.15hrs.    

3 Redwing  and 1 was trapped and ringed.

4 Brambling  + a single was trapped and ringed. 

 Anglers CP:

Greylag Goose 502 - a new record count!.  

Goldeneye 5. The first new arrival today, to join the 4 resident females.

Lepidoptera:

Anglers CP:  Willow Emerald Damselfly 1 at the  Pol Boardwalk Pond:

A Speckled Wood was seen at Wintersett Res.

31 birds were ringed  this morning: 

Highlights were:  2 Chiffchaff,  1 Goldcrest,  11 Goldfinch,  

5 Reed Bunting, 1 Lesser Redpoll,  1 Blackcap, 1 Brambling,

and 1 Redwing.

Low Moor/Midhope 2/10/22. G and J Wasse, S Green.

Crossbill 1 over towards Langsett, Pinkfeet c80 e at 11.30am. Swallow c6 s, Skylark 1 w, Redwing c 18, Siskin c 10. Raven 4, Peregrine 1, Red Kite 1, Sparrowhawk 2, C Buzzard c10, Kestrel 4.

A Green Sandpiper visited the wader scrape this evening (Dave Standish).

Storrs Mill to Ardsley Viaduct (Along the Dearne)
Kingfisher, 4 Buzzard and 3 Kestrel. Butterflies included 7 Red Admiral, 13 Comma, 7 Speckled Wood, 2 Small Copper, 9 Small White and 2 GV White. Also Southern and Migrant Hawker (Chris Parkin).

2 Small Copper were feeding on Japanese Anemone in Dave Smith's Carlton garden.

 Anglers CP Vis.Mig:

 Going north:

Little Egret 1 at 12.10hrs.  

Skylark 27 in one flock + 125 flew south west.

Going south:

Collared Dove 1.  Swallow 56.  House Martin 12.  Mistle Thrush 2.   

Grey Wagtail 4.  alba wag 3.  Linnet 115.   Peregrine 1 juvenile.

Meadow Pipit 335 - the best count of the autumn!   

Going south, south east:  Goldfinch 68. 

Going west:  Redwing 6.  

Wintersett Res:  Great White Egret 1. 

Anglers CP: Peregrine 1 juvenile. 

Disposal Point:  Spotted Flycatcher 1

38 birds were ringed at Wintersett this morning:

Highlights were: 6 Chiffchaff,  6 Goldcrest,   2 Treecreeper,   

7 Reed Bunting,   8 Goldfinch,  4 Robin,  1 Cetti's Warbler..

We also had a retrap Reed Warbler.   

Originally ringed on  4th Sept 2022, weighing 11.6 grams.   

Now up to 13.6grams. Might not be here next week!

Wintersett + Vis.Mig. 01.10.2022

Anglers CP Vis.Mig:

Going north:

3 Spoonbill  flew north at 07.25hrs.  

These birds had been at Edderthorpe yesterday!

Going south:

Goosander 8.  (Also 4 on Wintersett Res.)   House Martin 20.  Swallow 12.

Going east: 

Pink-footed Goose  176 in 4 skeins. 

Going  west:

3 Brambling.   49 Redwing.   31 Skylark - west/south.

Anglers CP: 

Little Egret 1.   Great Black-backed Gull 2 adults.  

Botany Dell:

Blackcap 1.

Wintersett Res:

The Great White Egret flew out of the 'Mousehole' on the south bank. 16.10hrs.
