Broomhill Flash mid AM- Birds present included 4 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Mute Swan, 21 Tufted Duck, 20 Gadwall, 10 Teal, 9 Wigeon, 3 Shoveler, 3 Mallard, 1 female Pochard, 1 Common Gull, 1 Kestrel, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 male Merlin, 2 Red Legged Partridge and c30 Fieldfare.
Bolton Ings late AM- Improvement and maintenance work on the ings is not causing any undue disturbance to the birds and may actually mean more accurate counts as birds congregate on the open water. Yesterday's count of 71 Pochard ( D.Waddington) is certainly much higher than any count in recent weeks. Present on the open water today, were14 Cormorant, 4 Grey Heron, 2 Great Crested Grebe,4 Mute Swan+4juvs, 195 Greylag, 64 Gadwall, 42 Pochard, 28 Tufted, 14 Shoveler, 1 female Goldeneye and 5 Common Gull. Also noted were 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Green Woodpecker, 1 Kingfisher, 3 Jay, 2 Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, and flyover flocks of Lapwing(25 and 10)and Golden Plover(35,25,22 and 16). At the feeding area on Old Pontefract Road were 2 Willow Tit and 1 Red Admiral butterfly.

Must be Quackers?
Very little news in from Old Moor today, just a couple of Green Sands' and a Redshank. A Little Egret was still at Broomhill Flash this morning.

New in is a drake Common Scoter on the Top Res. The drake American Wigeon and juv Scaup are still showing very well on Botany. Another juv drake Scaup is still on the Top Res, Pintail on CP, Egyptian Goose 3 on CP, Greylag Goose 88, Goosander 2 and Goldeneye 40.

As usual this will be held at The Old Moor Tavern, Broomhill. The date for this year’s event is Monday 17th December at 7pm. If you are interested in coming contact John Hewitt who will send you the menu to choose from. The cost is £14.99 and to secure you’re booking a £5 deposit is payable by no later than Thursday 6th December, the date of the Bird Study Group meeting (can be paid there).

The aftermath of the havoc caused on Anglers CP lake this morning by DEFRA officials going on the lake before dawn, flushing everything, including the entire gull roost, has had a profound and devastating effect. NOT A SINGLE GULL roosted on the lake tonight. Local birders were left watching empty water where there should have been thousands of gulls, (and hopefully the Caspian Gull returning).
This is not good PR for DEFRA as they continue to squander tax payers' money. A sniper rifle with a silencer would be far cheaper, more effective, and less damaging to all the other birds.

Underbank Reservoir - 42 Mallards, 10 Tufted Ducks, 4 Moorhens, 2 Coots, 4 Jays and 7+ Goldcrests.
Knot the 9 0'clock news!
A knot flew west over Reddishaw and Thurlstone Moor at 8.49. An apparent second bird flew west there with a Snipe at 10.34 (Dave Pearce).
Old Moor: Two Waxwings were around the Centre at about 9.30 before flying west (Bernard Emson). A Goldeneye on Mere and two Dunlin on Wath Ings.

Ruddy gunners!
The Defra sponsored Ruddy Duck shooters were on the Country Park lake before dawn causing havoc. Four motor boats were chasing all wildfowl all around the lake and the gull roost was flushed before it was even light. In two hours they shot 2 out of the 3 Ruddies present but still managed to empty the lake of wildfowl. Four boats, six vehicles, six personel, hotels, food, ammo, is this really the most cost effective way to kill two ducks?

Rabbit Ings
It was very busy today with at least 15 birders coming from as far as Sheffield, Doncaster and Tadcaster just to sup my tea and coffee at Monckton Cafe, or was it to see the Short Eared Owls???
The first one was sighted at 14:40hrs coming in from roughly the north western part of the site, 3 were seen together later. (Mick Birkinshaw) Keith Pickering took this shot looking towards Sandybridge Lane, on the nothern most part of the site.

Wintersett Highlight today was a group of 19 WHOOPER SWANS (3 juvs) that flew over very high before circling back and dropping in at 11.00 hrs.
Anglers Highlights today were a juv. GLAUCOUS GULL that flew over SW at 08.47 hrs and the return of the 1st winter CASPIAN GULL in the roost at 16.38 hrs.
All the goodies were still here. Drake American Wigeon and juv. Scaup on Botany. Juv. Common Scoter and 3 Egyptian Geese on Anglers
+ Water Rail 2ACP + 1WRes, Chiffchaff 1, Buzzard 3 over Haw Park Wood, Tawny Owl on Haw Park Lane. Teal 3 and Grey Heron 3 on CHRes. Also flying over WRes reeds were a Small Tortoiseshell and a Migrant Hawker

Vis Miggers saw: Wood Pigeon 9600 S, Stock Dove 27 S, Fieldfare 230 W/SW, Redwing 62 W/SW Crossbill 1 W at 08.02 + 2 more at 11.57, Brambling 2W and Merlin 1 S at 09.30hrs.

Bolton Ings - 4th November
A cold one this morning, 0c at 8 oclock and only 3c at 11.30, little wind and quite misty. Very quiet birdwise, a single Goldeneye my first of the winter being the highlight. No limping Oystercatcher, very few Geese and no raptors at all seen. A few more dabbling ducks than last week but the Pochard never came out of the reeds.
