Wintersett + Ringing + Insects 28.08.2021

 Anglers CP + Vis Mig:

Wigeon 9.   Hobby 1 over.

Going south:

A Tree Pipit at 07.35hrs  and another one at 08.05hrs.  Greenfinch 3. Sand Martin 10. Swift 10.     

Going west: 

Teal 3.   Yellow Wagtail - 5 juveniles dropped in at 08.15hrs, but left west after 10 minutes.

46 Birds were Ringed, highlights were: 

Willow Warbler 3.   Chiffchaff 13,   Reed Warbler 8.  Blackcap 8.   

Garden Warbler 1.  Yellowhammer 1.   Linnet 5.

Odonata  - Anglers CP

Black-tailed Skimmer 1.  

Lepidoptera - Anglers CP

Common Blue 1 female.  Small Tortoiseshell 1.

28/8/21 Midhope Res

A good 2 hour session between 1-3pm in glorious sunshine. Several Swallows were on telephone wires below the dam wall including both adults and juveniles - estimated c30.

As I climbed the hill towards the dam wall I heard the call of a Yellow Wagtail and 2 were catching flies with 10+ Pied Wagtails throughout my time on site.

Even better, as the western edge of the res became visible I could see a buzzard sized raptor quartering the shoreline which was a female Marsh Harrier. She flew up and down the res edge a few times before steadily gaining height and circling high above the water joined by 2 Buzzards.

Then, 10 minutes later, a Peregrine appeared low over the dam wall and again slowly circled a few times before gaining height. It appeared to be a juvenile with a full crop. 

What a magical 20 minute spell of birding.

 Anglers CP:

Swift 4.  Pochard 4.   

 4 Snipe were on the shoreline in the shallows. 

A  small flock of waders flew into the shallows briefly, at 09.40hrs.

These included a further 2 Snipe, a Dunlin  and a Curlew Sandpiper. 

The Dunlin and the  Curlew Sandpiper flew over and left north west very shortly afterwards.

Wintersett Res:

Goldeneye 4 females +  2 females Cold Hiendley Res..  Shoveler 25.  

Yellow-legged Gull  1 1st Winter  + 1  3rd Summer  Anglers CP.   

Little Grebe 16.   Wigeon 1.  Hobby 2.

Lepidoptera: 

Small Tortoiseshell  1 on west bank Cold Hiendley Reservoir.

Wintersett 26.08.2021

 Not a great deal to report today due to twitching  the White-tailed Lapwing at Blacktoft Sands RSPB.

First for Yorkshire!

Anglers CP:

Swift 1.  Greenshank 1.  Cormorant 7.

 200 Canada Geese were feeding in a stubble field nearby, 90 came on to the scrape with 10 Greylags. A Yellow Wagtail flew south and a Green Sandpiper paid a brief visit to the wader scrape. 2 Goldcrests and c50 Goldfinches were of note (JP/L & A Corrall).

Moths taken last night with Dave Smith and Chris Parkin included 3 Iron Prominent, 1 Pale Prominent, 1 Centre Barred Sallow, 4 Small Phoenix, 1 Knot Grass, 4 Dusky Thorn, 1 Canary Shoulder Thorn, 3 Small China Mark and 1 Brown China Mark.

Common Sandpiper 1 on south edge.

Cold Hiendley Res:

Little Grebe 3

62 birds were ringed this morning.

 

Highlights were -  6 Willow Warbler,   21 Chiffchaff,   5 Sedge Warbler,  

8 Reed Warbler,   1 Whitethroat,   3 Blackcap,  1 Goldcrest,   

1 Treecreeper  and  6 Goldfinch.

Today's highlights were 20 Teal, 2 Shoveler, 11 Tufted Duck, Kingfisher, Cetti's Warbler, 2 Great Spot Woodpecker, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Grey Partridge, 1 Yellow Wagtail (our first this year!) and 6 Meadow Pipits (passage birds).

At dusk 16 Canada geese flew south, A Tawny Owl was disturbed by a Buzzard and c20 Swallows came in to roost. (JP/L & A Corrall/K. Bannister/CG).

 52 birds were ringed by Pete Smith this morning:

Willow Warbler  8,   Chiffchaff 19,   Blackcap 3,   Lesser Whitethroat 1,  Linnet 12  and a cracking female Redstart.  A Garden Warbler was also retrapped.

 3 juvenile Sparrowhawks were hunting and calling regularly over the ringing rides this morning making it difficult to catch anything. The best I could do was a male Yellow Bunting, Blackcap, Whitethroat and Reed Warbler. A Willow Tit and a Cetti's Warbler were calling close by in SE3709.

South Kirkby Industrial site

113 Common Blue, 10 Brown Argus, 2m 2f Brimstone, 15 Small Heath, 2 Small Copper & 12 Small Tortoiseshell. Moths included Latticed Heath and Mint Moth and Migrant & Southern Hawker were around (Chris Parkin).

 Anglers CP:

A Little Egret was in the shallows.   Cormorant 5.   Common Scoter 1 male.    

Teal 12.  Shoveler 14.   Pochard 5.  Gadwall 58 + 9 Wintersett Res..

Wintersett Res:

Common Tern 1 adult + 1 juvenile.   Hobby 1.

Lepidoptera:

A Green -veined White and a Gatekeeper - in the Willow Wood, Wintersett Res.

4 Holly Blue,  a Small Tortoiseshell, a Red Admiral and 2 Large White 

were around ivy  on the edge of Pits Wood, Station Road.

3 Tree Pipits flew south at 10.01hrs and a Bar-tailed Godwit south at 10.32hrs.

Highlights were: 10  Willow Warbler,   6  Chiffchaff,   2  Blackcap,

Raptors. - The presumed recent White Tailed Eagle was showing from the lodge just after 1pm before being lost to view in the Margery Hill area. Hobby 2 together, Peregrine 2, ad.+ imm., Sparrowhawk 2, C Buzzard 4, Kestrel 10+. Small amount of movement with a pair of calling Yellow Wagtails e., Swallow c 20s., House Martin c 15s., Meadow Pipit c 40s. Ravens regular with c 15, Stonechat 3.

 A juvenile Lanner Falcon was found dead near the reserve this morning (Keith Bannister). It had a ring on with a telephone phone number and a tracker. Keith traced it back to someone in Staffordshire who had lost it on 12th August.

On the wader scrape 2 Little Egrets, 4 Little Grebes, 4 Teal and a Buzzard was sat near by. Elsewhere a leucistic Wood Pigeon a Cetti's called along with 3 juv Sparrowhawks and a Kingfisher.

A male Vapourer moth was flying and a Red Admiral was feeding on Buddleia.

 Anglers CP + Vis.Mig: 

2  juvenile Little Gulls still present.  Swift 2.

Going south:   

5 Shelduck, then south east. Sand Martin  22.  Curlew1 at 10.50hrs. Shoveler 6.

Going south west:  

Cormorant 7 at 08.30hrs, then went north. 

Yellow Wagtail 1 +1 north bank Wintersett Res.

Going north west:   Cormorant 11 at 09.14hrs.  

Going west:  Mistle Thrush 5.  

Santingley/Disposal Point:   A Spotted Flycatcher  (NFY) showed well.  Grey Partridge 2.  

Stock Dove 31 + 2  and 10 in Wintersett Village.  Green Woodpecker 1.

Odonata: A Southern Hawker and a Migrant Hawker were at the Disposal Point. 

Wintersett Res:  Common Tern 4.  Tufted Duck 3 medium young.

Wintersett + Ringing + Mothing 20.08.2021

Anglers CP: 

2 moulting, adult Black Terns (NFY)  and 2 juvenile Little Gulls were flying around this morning.    

A  juvenile Arctic Tern flew in at 09.30hrs.   Dunlin 1.  A Ringed Plover flew over.  

Little Ringed Plover 1.   Pochard 4 + 1 Wintersett Res..   A Little Egret was on an island in the shallows.

The butterfly count today included 5 Brown Argus, 4 Small Copper, 47 Common Blue, 23 Small Heath, 129 Meadow Brown and 77 Gatekeeper (Chris Parkin).

 Anglers CP:

2 juvenile Little Gulls were flying around,  then flew over to Wintersett Res. but returned late morning.

A Redshank was on the shallows.  Pochard 2.  Swift 20.   Dunlin 1.

Common Sandpiper 1 + 1 Wintersett Res.   Little Ringed Plover 1 juvenile.

Wintersett Res:

Shoveler 9.  Common Tern 4.   Goldeneye 4 females.  A juvenile Peregrine flew over.

Little Grebe 13 + 1 Anglers CP + 1 Cold Hiendley Res..

Mustelid:

A Stoat was seen in the Santingley area.

Small Copper 3.  Brown Argus 1.  Common Blue 1.  Comma 1 male.
