Wintersett 14.09.2021

Anglers CP:

A juvenile Arctic Tern flew east.   Chiffchaff 4.

Teal 13 + 1 Anglers CP.   Wigeon 8 + 1 Wintersett Res.   Pochard 2. 

Wintersett Res:

2 Golden Plover flew east.  Goldeneye 3 females.   A Water Rail was on Botany Road.  

Little Grebe 15 + 6 Anglers CP.   Shoveler 84 + 7 Anglers CP.

Carlton Marsh

The adult and juvenile Whinchat were still present. Also of note a 'Cream Crown' Marsh Harrier west at 08.45hrs, Reed Warbler, Whitethroat, a singing Chiffchaff, Kingfisher, 3 Swallows and 8 Mistle Thrush (JP/K. Bannister/L & A Corrall).

A Barn Owl was hunting the western meadow at dusk (D. Standish).

Carlton Marsh

The juvenile Whinchat from yesterday was still present, this time with an adult ( about a half a mile from the reserve on the path that leads to Sidcop in Cudworth) sallying for insects from  low bushes and concrete fence posts.

On or near the reserve 2 Cetti's Warblers sang, 6 Swallows, 12 Shovelers, 2 Kestrels, Sparrowhawk, 12 Mistle Thrushes and 1 adult Collared Dove (JP CG)

A Cream Crown Marsh Harrier over upper Cudworth at 07.50hrs was harassed by a Herring Gull as it drifted north (Keith Bannister).

A Willow Warbler and a  Reed Warbler in south west corner + a Reed Warbler  north bank WRes.

A Hobby flew over.  Swift 1.  

 

12th September 2021

23 birds were ringed:  

Highlights were :  Chiffchaff 10.  Blackcap 8.  Goldfinch 3.  

Wintersett Res: 

Reed Warbler 1 on north bank.  

Cetti's Warbler 3 males - north bank and north east bank WRes. + 1 male Ruin area,

+ 1 dead on road at Botany Bay.

Lepidoptera:

Green-veined White 1 north bank WRes..

Herptera:

A Grass Snake was in the area.

Carlton Marsh

This morning 2 Common Sandpiper flew south over the wader scrape, a Cetti's Warbler sang from the scrape, 3 Coal Tit, and a Juv. Whinchat was in a nearby field (JP).

This afternoon a Willow Tit called from the marsh (SE3710) at 12.15hrs (D. Standish).

Then at 14.20hrs a Cream Crown Marsh Harrier came up the valley and gradually climbed, heading NE. 2 Red-legged Partridge were in a field nearby (K. Bannister). 

An adult Hobby was catching dragonflies at 14.30hrs landing briefly in a Silver Birch (CG). 

Also present Water Rail, Kingfisher, 11 Shoveler and Buzzard.

72 Birds were ringed at Wintersett

Highlights were: 26 Chiffchaff ,  3 Willow Warbler,  5 Reed Warbler,  6 Sedge Warbler, 8 Blackcap,  1 Lesser Whitethroat,  1 Whitethroat and 1 Goldcrest.

Wintersett Res:

A male Cetti's Warbler  and a Water Rail were in the west bank marsh. 

Anglers CP + Vis.Mig:

Pintail 2 in.   Common Tern 1.  Hobby 1.  Chiffchaff 23. A Peregrine flew over.

Going south: 

Ringed Plover 3, (+ 1 north over WRes..)  Teal 12.  Meadow Pipit 4.  Red Kite 1 over Haw Park.   

Going north:  Goosander 8.

Lepidoptera:  A Green-veined White was in the Willow Wood, Wintersett Res..


6th September 2021

Anglers CP:  

A Yellow Wagtail flew over.   A Greenshank and 7 Black-tailed Godwit  flew south west.  

Common Tern 1.

27 Birds were ringed:

13 Chiffchaff,  2 Willow Warbler,  2 Reed Warbler,  9 Blackcap and 1 Whitethroat. 

Herptera:

2 Grass Snakes were in the area.  

 

7th September 2021

Anglers CP: 

3 Black-tailed Godwit flew around before leaving north at 08.15hrs.  Wigeon 2.

Conocephalus fuscus, the long-winged conehead, is a member of the family Tettigoniidae, the bush-crickets and is distributed through much of   Europe and temperate Asia. This bush-cricket is native to the British Isles where it may confused with the short-winged conehead.

Carlton Marsh

Still very quiet here especially for waders. Best today c10 Shoveler, 30 + Teal, 1 Little Egret north, 1 juv. and adult Buzzard and 1 ad & 1 juv. Collared Dove (not common here).

Butterflies included 10 Comma, 6 Red Admiral and 20 Speckled Wood.

There were at least 15 Brown Hawker, c 10 Migrant Hawker and 2 Southern Hawker males on the wing.

The last of 5 seats was refurbished and stained yesterday by Peter Rawson.

Carlton Marsh

A Redstart was found by John Finch this morning. 

40 Meadow Pipits and 6 Skylarks were feeding in stubble (JP).

This evening Kingfisher, Cetti's Warbler, 8 Shoveler and 57 Teal. This was the highest count for 20 years! 15 Swallows came in to roost.

A Southern Hawker along with several Migrant Hawkers were hunting.

10 species of butterfly today included 1 Brown Argus, a very late Gatekeeper, 4 Small Heath, 2 Small Copper, 1 Painted Lady, 3 Red Admiral, 44 Speckled Wood, 6 Small White and 4 Green Veined White (Chris Parkin).

Carlton Marsh

Today A Willow Tit called from the Whin Pool area of the embankment at SE 3709. A Cetti's Warbler sang from the reedbeds and a Snipe and 41 Lapwings were additional to the 20 Teal and other resident wildfowl on the wader scrape (JP/K. Bannister).

Butterflies of note included 2 Painted Lady, 20 Speckled Wood, 12 Red Admiral, 3 Comma and at least 9 Brown Hawker dragonflies (L & A Corrall).

As dusk approached 2 Water Rails called, 3 Cetti's Warbler sang and a female Tawny Owl called (D. Standish/P & R Thorpe).

The ups and downs of life. I reported recently how well the renovated seats looked on the old railway embankment, well last night some morons decided to fire one of the picnic tables in the car park, which the fire brigade put out, but not before it was annihilated!

Wintersett Ringing 05.09.2021

 72 birds were ringed this morning:

Highlights were 3 Willow Warbler,  26 Chiffchaff,  5 Reed Warbler,  

6 Sedge Warbler,  8 Blackcap,  1 Lesser Whitethroat,  

1  Whitethroat,  3 Swallow,  1 Goldcrest and 2 Linnet.

 

Ewden valley 5/9/21.

Very steady all round. WT Eagle 1, Red Kite 1, C Buzzard 6+, Hobby 1, Kestrel 6+, Sparrowhawk 1. Raven 2, Stonechat 4, Meadow Pipit c 85 s. Swallow c 25 s, Siskin 2, 1 m Blackcap and 1 Fox.

Carlton Marsh

Another dreary day was brightened up a bit by some decent birds. This morning c500 Geese on the top fields comprised of Greylags, but most were Canadas. Also present Green Woodpecker, 2 single Willow Tits on the embankment  at SE3710 & SE 3709) (JP).

This afternoon 7 Shoveler, 28 Teal, 1 Swift south, 1 Hobby north at 15.13hrs, 1f Great Spot Woodpecker, Kingfisher, 1m Cetti's Warbler, 1 Water Rail, 1 Goldcrest, 5 Herring and 4 LBB Gulls.

One of 4 Midgley seats bought with a grant about 20 years ago were restored by Peter Rawson for us. All 4 have been difficult to use over recent years, as a design fault meant that they sloped to far downwards. Peter, without being asked, mended them cheaply and then stained them. He has probably prolonged the life of them for many more years - a magnificent job, Thank you.

Cudworth Common & Littleworth Park

 c400 Canada & c20 Greylag Geese were on Ferrymoor Flash with a juv Cormorant and 3 Shoveler.

37 birds ringed  were  ringed at Wintersett this morning.

Highlights were:  Willow Warbler 1,  Chiffchaff 9,   Blackcap 6 ,  Linnet 6  

and Reed Bunting 2.

Haw Park:

Hobby 1 over.

A Green-veined White was on the west bank, Wintersett Res.

Carlton Marsh

Peter Rawson made a cracking job of repairing the damaged seats on the embankment this afternoon and the YWT cut the vegetation on the island in  the scrape. 

Today's birds included juv. Kingfisher, 29 Teal, 1 Cormorant north, 4 Shoveler, 4 Little Grebe, Water Rail, 3 juv. Sparrowhawk and Buzzard (CG)

This evening 630 Canada Geese and 107 Greylags came to feed on an adjacent stubble field at dusk (D. Standish).

Butterflies on show were 2 Red Admiral, 3 Peacock and 4 Speckled Wood.

Wintersett 01.09.2021

 Cloudy with a cool, moderate northerly breeze.

7 Black-tailed Godwit flew into the shallows at 09.48hrs,  left east at 10.11 hrs.

Yellow-legged Gull 1 adult.  Wigeon 5.
