Carlton Marsh

 The nearby fields to the east again provided 4 Whinchat, at least 6 Yellow Wagtails and 2 Wheatear.

On the reserve Green Woodpecker, Cetti's Warbler, 50 Canada Geese and a belated sighting of a Great White Egret on the scrape yesterday. (JP/L A Corrall)

A Painted Lady was in Les Corrall's Cudworth garden.

Highlights were: 13 Willow Warbler.  10 Chiffchaff.  10 Blackcap.  

Garden Warbler 1.  Whitethroat 1.  Lesser Whitethroat 1  and Goldcrest 1.

Wintersett 06.09.2022

 Anglers CP + Vis.Mig:

Vis.Mig: A Meadow Pipit flew south.  A flock of 7 Grey Herons flew south west.

Reed Warbler 1.  Little Grebe 2.  Pochard 94.  

A Nuthatch visited the feeding station.

Wintersett Village: 

A Little Owl was calling. 

Wintersett Res. Boathouse Reedbed:

A Cetti's Warbler was calling.  A Swift flew over.  Common Tern 1.

A Whitethroat and a Sedge Warbler were on north bank.  

A Hobby,  carrying a dragonfly,  flew down over the Dam Wall,  very close to where I was standing at the bottom.  Wow!

Another good day on the fields, Stonechat, 4 Whinchats, 10 Yellow Wagtails, Wheatear, c100 Linnets, 20 Greenfinches and 30 Meadow pipits all grounded. (JP/L & A Corrall)

Carlton Marsh (yesterday 5/9/22)

The top field east of the reserve provided 12 Meadow Pipit, 8 Yellow Wagtails, juv/female Whinchat, 1juv/female Wheatear, 4 Greenfinch, 2 Red-legged Partridge and a Hobby at 12.20hrs (JP/L & A Corrall).

In the afternoon 32 Teal, Little Egret, 24 Shoveler and Green Woodpecker (CG/R. Laverack).

A moth session with Dave Smith in the car park provided 2 Noctule and 3 Pipistrelle Bats at dusk over the scrape and Tawny Owl. 

Before being rained off at 23.20hrs we caught 1 Black Rustic, 7 Centre Barred Sallow, 5 Dusky Sallow, 5 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 2 Old Lady, 3 Small China Mark, 2 Vines Rustic, 1 Red Green Carpet and 1 Shuttled Shaped Dart.

Wilthorpe Marsh west 5/9/22.

Quiet but a few migrants in with a Whinchat in the main marsh, 2 Spotted Flycatchers in the sewage farm area and a Goldcrest. Singing Cetti's main marsh.

Wintersett + Insects 05.09.2022

 Wintersett Res:

A Sedge Warbler was on the north bank.  

A Whitethroat was in Botany Dell + 2 on west bank.

Little Grebe 13 + 2 ACP.   100 Linnets were  over the north bank field. 

4 Common Terns ( 2 adults  + 2 juveniles). Pochard 4.  

Shoveler 2  + 4 ACP.  Goldeneye 4 females.  Wigeon 4. 

A Green Woodpecker  flew over the west bank clump.  

Steve Denny had a Ruff on the boathouse slipway this evening, but it flew off at 19.13 hrs.

Haw Park:

Hobby 2.

Anglers CP:

Common Sandpiper 2.  Teal 5.  Snipe 2.

Odonata:

ACP Pol Boardwalk Pond:   2 Willow Emeralds  are new for this site

Golf Course Pond: 

Willow Emerald 2.

2 Emerald Damselfly were the first for many years! at the small Golf course pond! 

Brown Hawker 1 over north bank WRes.  

Common Blue Damselfly 1 over Botany Bay.   Common Darter 1 male ACP.

Lepidoptera:

A Green-veined White was on the north bank WRes..

Carlton Marsh

This morning 60+ Greenfinch, 5 Yellow Wagtail, 6 Skylark, 6 Pied Wagtail and hundreds of gulls (mainly Black Headed) were feeding on a freshly ploughed field east of the reserve. 

On the reserve 3 Little Egret, Snipe, Cetti's Warbler, Tawny Owl and a family of 6 Grey Partridge.

This afternoon 2 Water Rail called, and 38 Teal were on the wader scrape with a Little Egret (CG).


Wintersett + Vis.Mig. + Moths 04.09.2022

Wintersett Res:

Cetti's Warbler 1 male north bank + 1 male north east bank.

32 birds ringed @Wintersett1 before rain stopped play; 

Highlights were 10 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow Warbler, 3 Goldcrest, 7 Blackcap,

3 Reed Warbler and 2 Sedge Warbler.

Anglers CP:

Common Sandpiper 2.   House Martin 65.  

24 Chiffchaff were in the small bush at the bottom of hill!

2 Snipe were blogging around.   Peregrine 1 juvenile.

Anglers CP Vis.Mig:

Wigeon  19 + 3 flew west.  A calling Grey Plover flew south west at 09.20hrs.

A Little Egret flew north west at 09.58hrs.

Carlton Marsh

This morning 10 Shoveler, 27 Teal, 5 Grey Heron, Snipe, Kingfisher, Little Egret, 2 Water Rail and a singing Cetti's Warbler (CG).

This afternoon c500 mixed gulls on the fields and 40 Linnet (JP).

 Red Admiral was on Buddlea.

Anglers CP:  

Pintail 1.    2 Swallows flew south.

35 birds were ringed this morning: 

Chiffchaff 23.  Willow Warbler 2.  Blackcap 4.  Reed Warbler 1.

Wintersett Res:

A Cetti's Warbler was in the boathouse reedbed.    

Mediterranean Gull 1 x 1st Winter.

 Lepidoptera MEGA:

A Clifden NonpareilCatocala fraxini,  trapped overnight,  

was a dream moth for Pete Smith.   The first record for the Wintersett Area!

Carlton Marsh

Gulls following the plough this morning included 70 LBB, 6 Herring, 1 Common and 1 juvenile Yellow-legged Gull (JP).

8 Shoveler and a Little Egret were also present (K. Bannister).

There were 9 Grey Wagtails and a Cormorant. Butterflies included 1 Painted Lady, 5 Red Admiral, 4 Comma, 145 Speckled wood, and 5 Small Copper. A Humming-bird Hawk Moth was nectering on Buddlea and 2 Ichnuemon stramentarius were seen (C. Parkin).

Rabbit Ings

Green Woodpecker, 15 House Martins. Butterflies there included 3 Meadow Brown 12 Small Heath, 3 Brown Agus, 29 Common Blue and 3 Small Copper. (C. Parkin)

Carlton Marsh

9 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs and 2 Reed Warblers were ringed this morning. Also around, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Water Rails and Little Egret. The two Whooper Swans are still with the Mute Swan on the scrape and seem fine.

This evening from the top of Sunny Bank 1 Fox and 4 Snipe were feeding on the wader scrape.

Carlton Marsh

Most of the activity took place on the scrape this morning with 7 Shoveler, Kingfisher, Cormorant and Water Rail. Also present 10 Teal, c40 Gadwall, 5 House Martins and Great Spotted Woodpecker.

c50 Swallows came in to roost at dusk and male and female Tawny Owls called (D. Standish).

First of all congratulations to the Wintersett Ringing Group on the ringing of a Barred Warbler on 27/8! With the hours and years you put in, it is well deserved.

These are the highlights of recent days; on Wednesday (24th) another Willow Emerald was seen in front of the hide on the leaf of Typha latifolia (D Smith/CG). Then on Friday another 2 were seen near the hide on nettles beside the dike ( L & A Corrall).

Meanwhile a Clouded Yellow butterfly flew past the observer, the first since September 2013 (JP). Also on that date a Goldcrest and 4 Swifts.

A Humming Bird Hawk Moth was feeding in Les Corrall's Low Cudworth garden on 26/8.

Today Sunday (28/8/22)

Little Egret.

Butterflies included 1 Painted Lady, 8 Red Admiral, 59 Speckled wood, 4 Meadow Brown, 4 Brown Argus, 5 Common Blue, 1 Small Copper,  8 Large White and 24 unidentified white species.

Yet another Willow Emerald was resting on the Western Meadow gate, our 5th record (C. Parkin).

8 species of raptor today with the surprise return of the WT Eagle which looks in fine adult plumage. 2 rt Hen Harriers were together, 1 cc Marsh Harrier, c 3 Hobby, Red Kite 2, Kestrel c 10. C Buzzard 10+, Sparrowhawk 1. Raven 6+, Ring Ouzel 1, Stonechat 6+, Linnet flock c20. Hundreds of Swallows and House Martins blogging at times probably feeding up before drifting south + 1 Swift.

Anglers CP:

28 Goosander,  in one flock, flew east.   121 Swallow flew south. 

Green Woodpecker 3. 

Wintersett Res:

Linnet 80 on north bank.  Yellow-legged Gull 1 adult.  Goldeneye 4 females.

A Tree Pipit flew over.    

Lepidoptera:

A Brown Argus was on the west bank WRes. 

Insects:

6 Roesel's Bush Crickets,  Roeseliana roeselii,   were seen this morning,   at two locations,   thanks to Georgie W-S' hearing!   Wintersett Res.west bank +   Anglers CP.

A Long-winged Conehead,  Conocephalus fuscusas, was in the Willow Wood meadow + 3 were seen  on the Pol at Anglers CP.
