shrike update

Great Grey Shrike, Haigh/High Hoyland - Geoff Carr
The Great Grey Shrike showed reasonably well though distant until about mid afternoon when the wind got up and it went to ground. It has been present since at least tuesday, but the area is vast so we will just have to hope that this turns out to be its favoured spot. From Junction 38 of M1 (Haigh) take A637  towards Huddersfield, then left up Jebb Lane. After less than a mile you will reach Green Acre Pond on left and Yorkshire Sculpture Park Longside Gallery on right. Please park sensibly somewhere here, as road (Jebb Lane) is very narrow. Continue up Jebb Lane for short distance and take public footpath on left. After first field you will reach a rusty roller beside footpath. View from here (cSE280110), bird favours trees and bushes bordering first and second fields and also gets on wires but also crossed over onto Bretton Park side of road. Do not leave public footpath as this is a heavily used shooting area.

Other news: A juv White-front was with Greylags at Royd Moor. The Bittern was seen going to roost on the Reedbeds at Old Moor tonight and 30 Goosanders roosted on the Mere.

Hell !!!
Its all happening in the Wakefield area. A couple of goodies at the 'piece-de-resistance' and now Bretton Park. Its a good job this blog concentrates on birds in the Barnsley district.

Note. The 'piece-de-resistance' is a birdwatching area that was included in the Barnsley recording area because it was the favorite birding spot of birders who made up and bent the rules in the 1960s and 1970s. The site is actually miles away from the actual boundaries of the Barnsley area.
So to be fair - all bird records from this area should be struck from the records relating to birds that have been seen in the actual BARNSLEY DISTRICT.
